Agreed. Very bright futures for both Vic and Cody. Watford may even have a future in the NBA. Also, highly recommend that new readers sign-up for a BtownBanners account to talk IUBB, Former Hoosiers like Vic, Cody, Watford, etc., other Indiana sports, and much more on the Btown Forums. -
Oregon State’s first matchup in the College World Series will be against Mississippi State. It will be aired on ESPN2 at 3 PM ET/12 PM PT. Depending on the outcome of that game and IU’s game, the Beavers will play either the Hoosiers or Cardinals in their second game. Oregon State, the number three national seed, is arguably the best team on Indiana’s side of the bracket. Currently boasting a 50-11 record, the Beavers are undefeated on neutral fields (5-0). On their way to a Pac-12 Championship, their first since 2006, OSU lost a miniscule six conference games. The Beavers are simply not accustomed to losing. The Beaver offense can be potent. They have a combined .291 batting average and a +172 run differential. Oregon State’s on-base percentage of .380 is impressive, as it shows their tremendous plate discipline. Lacking a ton of power, OSU has hit 30 homeruns, with Michael Conforto accounting for over a third of them (11). The Beavers have 101 doubles and 141 total extra base hits. Compared to the Hoosiers, the Beavers average about a one less run per game. While Oregon State averages 5.8 runs per game, Indiana averages 6.9. Pitching is the backbone of Oregon State. With two All-Americans, Andrew Moore and Matt Boyd, the Beaver pitching staff has allowed a mere 136 earned runs and have a 2.22 ERA. They’ve only given up 415 hits, about seven per game, and boast an impressive 1.06 WHIP. Giving up just 16 this season, OSU doesn’t allow many homeruns. Opponents are batting .213 and have only 95 extra-base hits. OSU averages about seven strikeouts per game and have a 2.58 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio. If Oregon State is going to win their third national championship, pitching will carry them to the title. Comparing Oregon State to Indiana, the Hoosiers have the advantage on offense, but the Beavers have the pitching edge. If these two meet in the CWS, it will be a battle between great offense and great pitching. Indiana has won many slugfests, but Oregon State has the ability to limit the game to a pitching duel. It can be said that OSU and IU are the top two teams on this side of the bracket, and most college baseball fans want to see them battle. On Saturday, Indiana Baseball will play its first ever game in the College World Series. Their side of the bracket features the number three national seed Oregon State, Mississippi State, and Louisville. All Hoosiers will preview each team in coming days, starting with Louisville. Indiana will take on Louisville on Saturday at 8 PM ET/7 PM CT on ESPN. The Cardinals and Hoosiers have squared off three times this season, with the Hoosiers winning twice, but UL winning the most recent matchup. In those three games, the Hoosiers batted .221 and averaged four runs per game. The Cards, on the other hand, batted .204 and averaged two runs per game. Advantage: Hoosiers. Indiana’s defense committed four errors, three coming in one game, however, and Louisville’s defense committed three. Advantage: Neither. Louisville won Game Three of the season series on a walk-off hit. Indiana’s pitching only allowed two earned runs to UL this season, a 0.68 ERA. Louisville, by comparison, allowed nine earned runs, a 3.12 ERA. Advantage: Hoosiers. Louisville had a very nice season. They have a 51-12 overall record, but a 2-3 record on neutral fields. They lost a mere four conference games on their way to a Big East Championship, their fourth in the last five years. Their normal starting lineup has a .267 batting average on the year with 26 home-runs and 125 total extra base hits. The team’s combined on-base percentage is an impressive .383 and they’ve stolen 150 bases this season. Their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 2.50 and opponents are hitting just .212 with just 83 extra base-hits. Nick Burdi, their closer, throws a monster fastball, sometimes reaching triple-digits. There simply isn’t many weak spots on this Cardinal baseball team, and that’s why they’re heading to Omaha. Indiana won the season series against Louisville, but the CWS will be a totally different challenge. The Hoosiers and Cardinals game will be a battle Saturday. The Hoosier offense carried them through the Super Regional, but their pitching will need to step up if the Hoosiers want to make a run at the National Championship. Because of the setting and implications of the game, Saturday’s winner may win by just one-run. Indiana Baseball’s first appearance in the CWS will be very interesting and exciting. http://allhoosiers.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/college-world-series-preview-louisville-cardinals/
