What “long-thought-out-decisions” are you referring to? You seem to think this is a recent issue with IU, and it’s far from that. But it’s not the process, it’s the leadership. If you have insight into IU, this isn’t revelatory.

I get that - we’d just be looking to calm the overly emotional reaction of some fans who aren’t able to do that for themselves. Why would that be a good reason to do something?

There are, sadly, examples of the extreme behavior of emotionally charged “fans”, but they’re exceedingly rare and shouldn’t drive the decision as to whether a coach stays or goes. If that’s the standard, however, and if people think that could happen with our program and fan base, that would be beyond disappointing and sad. If it occurs, it won’t be because the University failed to fire Woodson in January rather than in early March.

Mike Davis’ ascension was similar. Will be interesting to see how Diebler does long term.

Let the season play out and then make a reasoned decision based on the results to date and the long term benefit of the program.

What does the DB situation have to do with any of this? And are you really suggesting that IU fans would become violent toward Woodson? That’s either dense or really concerning.

I think it’s very plausible, but I would be surprised if that happens today or tomorrow or even this month. If it occurs, early March would be the most likely time frame. If they elect to go to that length to give him a dignified exit, I think they’d let the season progress to a point where the end is in sight.

QB cares deeply about the University and the basketball program. Disagree with him all you want, but the “he doesn’t care” stuff is ridiculous, with all due respect.

I’m just not prone to emotionally driven decisions, since they rarely produce good results.

Neither of those interim solutions worked well for us. Look at the landscape of college and pro sports and provide examples of interim coaches, appointed after a coach was fired for performance, succeeded. Ed Orgeron was hired at USC after Pat Haden blew out Lane Kiffin, but his tenure there was short-lived. Temporary fixes are just that - it’s baling wire and duct tape.

How does this, in any way, create an environment that would “risk something like a Dave Bliss situation . . .”? I know DB lost his way after his IU days and what he did at Baylor was horrible, but I’m not sure I follow you here.

The process has never been the problem. Leadership has been the problem.

Mike Davis and Dan Dakich come to mind as a couple of data points. I guess Pat Riley was a good interim coach several decades ago. And Jerry Oliver.

I’m not arguing against emotion, but it’s not a great way to make long term and beneficial decisions.

What types of reactions do you envision? Are you embellishing or do you really believe IU fans will become violent? Should Woodson be concerned for his safety, and that of his family?

The odds are high that firing him now would produce a worse, not better, record over the balance of the season. Interim coaches rarely produce better results. The energy around the program will rebound when a new coach is named, and that’s not happening for a couple of months, at the earliest. Even with a mid-season dismissal, they aren’t getting traction on a replacement until the season ends. Nobody in an existing job is interviewing now. Those are the only obvious things at this point.

Have said nothing of the sort, though I have said there’s a process as to how this will get done, and people are angry about that reality.
