Did you attend IU? If so, did you ever work with or around anyone in the University administration? Were you familiar with the workings of the athletic department? The IUF?

It’s not ridiculous if you understand the culture at IU, which greatly values consensus building. The notion that Buckner is calling the shots here just isn’t correct. He has influence and plenty of gravitas, but he’s far from the only person with input. And Dolson didn’t have Woody foisted upon him. This isn’t complex. We have always been slow to fire coaches.

Because it’s not part of the culture. Allen got three years of complete failure before they let him go, and that was after it was clear to most people that he wasn’t good enough for the job and had no self awareness that he had completely lost control. Miller got four years and, while much better than Allen, was still tone deaf. So Woody, a favorite son who won BT MVP playing in only the last 6 games of an 18 game schedule, is going to get more time unless he decides to pull the rip cord himself. It’s how they’ve done things for years and years. And years.

Dolson has been around IU and IU basketball for a long time. Buckner had influence, but he didn’t have unilateral authority or anything resembling it. SD was an enthusiastic supporter of hiring Woody and, after Stevens made it clear Dolson’s efforts were in vain, he was very happy to get Woody on board.

The common thread here is the leadership above the coach. Our last three AD’s were tremendously shaky hires, and two of them only got the job because of their ties to IU. No one else would’ve even considered them for a P4/5 AD job. The third wasn’t in any real demand either. Poor decisions usually come from un / lightly qualified people. I like Dolson and he loves IU, and he’s easily the best of the three, but it’s not an accident that we are where we are.

I’ll save football for another day but the basketball program is in much better shape than football was when Dolson finally moved Allen out. If people think Woody is out of his league, he is light years ahead of where Allen was.

It was “more than it was”, which is what I was trying to communicate when I came here yesterday. It wasn’t nothing, though. There are people who are increasingly concerned with the direction of the program, but there wasn’t nearly enough concern to make a move. That said, I can’t envision a scenario where the expectation for Year 4 isn’t make or break for Woody. He is very well liked, but Dolson wants to win. Not saying others don’t want to win too, but Scott wants to be happier with the direction of the program than he is now.

“Pushing for the ouster” isn’t accurate, in my opinion based on what I know. That’s not a shot at anyone else here, but I think it greatly overstates his views and actions based on what I have been told. He’s not a “keep him and don’t even think about letting him go” guy, but he wasn’t leaving packing boxes outside of Woody’s office either, and wasn’t about to do battle with Buckner by planting stories in the media and pushing QB into an inescapable corner.

Glass, though he met with little internal resistance. AM was the only real candidate.

While I agree, we should’ve simply communicated that to him in a clear, unambiguous way. We didn’t. It was the second time that avoidance tactic was used during a short period of time, and it wasn’t a good look at all. Embarrassing, unnecessary, shoddy.

It’s an insular place and has been for years and years. I grew up around it and even many good people who’ve been there for a long time can’t smell the odor that outsiders recognize immediately.

That’s not how it went down. It was more like “We’d be happy to talk to you Mike” followed by unreturned phone calls. He never got the chance to be seriously considered, since the guy in charge didn’t seriously consider him at all. That’s what alienated him and the basketball alums.

I wouldn’t agree that he’s completely unqualified, but it’s not hard to see that his NBA view of basketball doesn’t work in college, and that’s style of play, roster management, in game decisions and prep work. It’s just a bad fit. And he and a bunch of others were disappointed by the way he was treated by someone who was completely tone deaf and in love with another coach. The blow back was bad and it probably helped Woody be at the front of the line after Miller was booted. I knew Dolson and Buckner weren’t banging heads and trying to out-scheme each other. That was beyond crazy and really uninformed.. But I’ve heard Dolson has been taken aback by the negative views of Woody, and he’s also shocked by the number of fans dressed as empty seats for much of the season, especially since the tickets were already sold.

Woody didn’t get hired because he’s black. A trustee was very public regarding Mike and her feelings if he wasn’t to be retained, and Herbert drove the bus for Sampson, which included a diversity as a component. But I’ve never once heard Woody’s skin color invoked by anyone.

I don’t think he’s very well plugged in. His source could be correct, but I don’t know we’re there yet. He’s been used before.

I’m sure the conspiracy theorists will consider this to be another intentional story planted in the media. It’s all so complex to them!

Woody was very interested in the job before Miller was hired, and he had the backing of many basketball alums. Glass made him wait in the figurative lobby and generally treated him dismissively, and that pissed off the basketball guys and others royally. There’s more to that and the blow back was nasty, but that started a bunch of this. Woody is a good guy and whatever he’s shown as a coach, no one felt good about that and some hard feelings remained.

Not trying to be argumentative, but they’re not “voting” on this, now or in the future.

I think Woody’s status as a former star player entitled him to better treatment than most others, at least in the eyes of some observers.

Crean lost a lot of support from both IU admin people and former players. The Davis / Holt deal really hurt him. Bit Glass was solidly behind him until he was told that it a change was going to occur. Buckner delivered that message but he was far from the only one who felt that way. Woody wanted to be considered and a bunch of basketball alums supported him but Glass locked onto to Miller and blew Woody off. That created a rift that didn’t heal.

I will back a bit later with some thoughts on this - some work intrudes☹️

Woody, with support from a large number of basketball alums, wanted the job when we hired Miller. Glass blew him off, which angered those guys, including QB. That was a big error, even if he wasn’t the right guy. Some things linger for years.
