General Coach Candidate News
IndyResident16 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Depends. Do we revamp the staff? In that case, who is hiring the staff replacements? Who has Woodson ever evaluated at this level? Every hire has been forced, retained from previous staff, or a recommendation hire (Yasir). Does Woodson even listen to the new staff? As scary as trying to replace multiple holes in the roster next year may be, who is going to coach them up? Who is going to develop and maximize their talent? -

Since 2021 - Fired Archie Miller and paid him $10.3 million - Fired Tom Allen and paid him $15.5 million; negotiated down from $20.8 million - On the hook for Mike Woodson and his $12.6 million Starting to understand why IU hired somebody with a fundraising background. Imagine how many girl scout cookies Dolson could sell? -

As if they didn't learn from the Allen debacle. I bet Dolson gets the best Christmas baskets from different agencies every year. -
FAU's defensive metrics are pretty alarming and that's with about a 20 spot jump in the last 2 weeks. They've tanked from last year despite bringing back nearly their entire core. To your second point, this exactly. Dusty May is nothing more than a box checker. -State/university ties -up and comer -flash in pan tournament success There's nothing that says Dusty May will be anything more than the roll of the dice here. Have to do better than that this go around.

Schertz might be the only "we're not actually serious about winning" candidates I could talk myself into. I respect the way he's worked his up from the D2 level. -

Drew and maybe Pearl, but that's about it. But they've established programs at their current gig and would likely play Dolson like a fiddle for a pay raise. -

I'm going to lament on Chris Beard until the AD either does the right thing and hires Chris Beard or actually gives the job to somebody else. This thread is about general coaching candidates for a job that isn't even open. Feel free to ignore me. You can always listen to fairy tale fish stories about Brad Stevens in the meantime if you'd like. -

Taken more teams to the NCAA tournament than number of times we've been total in the same time frame. Let that sink in. -

Kevin Wilson would still be here if he won games. Just sayin. -

I keep hearing the excuse "we can't hire him because he's an alcoholic" and that "alcohol contributed to DV allegations". Where is the proof that he can't control his liquor? -

And cleared of all charges with everything behind him en route to another 20 win season. Meanwhile, we're 6 point underdogs tonight to a team that hasn't won a game in a month lol. -

No particular interest in rooting for Ole Miss regardless of how much I envy their athletic department. They have real pros over there. -

Glad you said you were speculating, because that's all you're doing. 1. His "difficulties" with alcohol or whatever you and others claim clearly haven't prevented him from performing his duties. He's ascended through the coaching ranks faster than any coach I can ever remember. On the verge of taking his 4th program to the NCAAT in 8 years and next year will be his 5th whoever hires him. Only Lon Krueger and Rick Pitino can lay the claim of taking 5 different schools the the dance. It took each of them over 30 years. Beard will have done it in less than a decade. 2. Read the toxicology report included in the police report. Stone cold sober. -

Almost want him to come to the B10, just to shove it in our face. On the other hand, that's just one more program we're going to be looking up at. There's not many left at the bottom at this point and there's a seat saved. -

I care about winning. Chris Beard solves that. Nothing more, nothing less. -

Won't disagree with any of that, but that's purely a choice. In regards to actual fit, Chris Beard is a home run. Guys like Archie Miller and Mike Davis weren't a good fits because of their lack of personality. Chris Beard has all the traits to manage expectations here, very few do. It's why we keep hiring new coaches every 4-5 years. -

Not because of fit. They were ranked #2 in the country lol. -

Funny that Beard has literally been a good fit wherever he's gone. It's almost as if winners fit wherever they go. -

For Dolson's sake it better be true. I'd hate to think it was actually Scott Dolson's idea to hire Mike Woodson. That makes it worse lol. -

Beard has been a D1 head coach for 8 seasons and is about to take his 4th program to the tournament. It’ll be #5 next year whoever hires him. He was a national runner-up at Texas Tech for crying out loud. Sampson has taken multiple schools to the F4 and Houston is now in a big boy conference. Houston is a top 5 program in the country the last 5-6 seasons after being irrelevant for the last 40. Pearl has lead two football schools to #1 rankings. All three of those guys are top 5 coaches in today’s game (along with Few and Self). Anybody IU hires is going to be underwhelming compared to those 3. We’ve already had one of them and the other 2 would come here in a second. We won’t even pick up the phone. It’s sad honestly. -
He's definitely on the top of my list of "other candidates" if IU isn't going to make a serious hire. Could do worse than a Schertz but it's definitely not the home run, momentum hire this program desperately needs.

Not really sure this job requires you to be a X's and O's basketball savant to succeed. Really just need a guy who can identify and develop talent and recruit guys who play not only hard, but smart basketball for 40 minutes. I watch guys like Pearl, Beard, or Sampson and they aren't out-scheming anybody. But their dudes are the biggest and baddest on the court and have the willpower to get it done.
