And Bloomington isn’t woke? It would take a serious big donor voice threatening to pull funds for IU to consider Fritz.

He may not take the job. Dolson (assuming he’s allowed to make the next hire) would be foolish if he didn’t make him say no.

Why? Age should not be a detriment in this case. Hire the guy who is best adept at building the program as quickly as possible. History tells us the next coach is only going to be here a handful of years. Give me 5-6 years of Fritz leaving the program in a better place than he found it (like he’s done at every single other program he’s coached) than burning it to the ground in 5-6 years like IU has repeatedly done for the last century. What’s the saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

Why is he not realistic? Because his age or because he wouldn’t take the job? If you think the next hire is going to be here 15-20 years you haven’t followed IU football nearly as long as I thought you have or college football in general. There are very few lifers in this day and age. Whoever IU hires need to put together the best 5-7 years as possible.

I’m willing to look past one year (in which he’s gone 22-3 since) and look at the 4 other programs he’s built over the last 3 decades. - 2 JUCO national titles at Blinn Junior College -built Central Missouri into a perennial D2 contender -built the Sam Houston St program and lead them to back to back FCS runner-up finishes -Went 17-4 at Georgia Southern in 2 years as they transitioned to FBS -inherited an absolute dumpster fire at Tulane and has taken them bowling in 5/8 years including a NY6 bowl win last year If the goal is to hire a program builder Willie Fritz is your guy age be damned. It’s literally what he does. Give me 6-7 years of Willie Fritz over 6-7 of archaic Paul Chryst

People scoffing at Willie Fritz either: a) have never bothered to look at his resume and/or b) simply have their head in the sand

Willie Fritz. Has literally won at every level of college football from JUCO to D2 to FCS and now FBS.

He got fired from his alma mater because he didn’t like recruiting. Not sure how that would ever work at a school like Indiana.

I don’t think anyone is forcing you to read this thread, let alone participate in it. IU is likely within 24 hours of ridding one of its coaches from one of the worst contracts in college football history and it certainly warrants discussion, particularly on how it’s going to be financed.

I’m good, thanks though. Any negotiated settlement is going to result in a guaranteed payment paid out almost immediately (see Paul Chryst). Again, why would Allen negotiate a LESSER payout only to be offset by future earnings when Indiana is contractually obligated to pay him $20.8 million if fired for cause?
  11. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

Wrong. That’s precisely why a settlement is reached in the first place, so he can immediately gain willful employment. Why would Allen negotiate a smaller payout paid out over a period of time AND be offset by future earnings instead of taking the $20 million IU is obligated to pay him of the rest of his contract life?

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

Which point? That Dolson is incompetent or that Josh doesn’t understand how fundraising works and that there are a number of IU athletic donors who contribute to multiple endeavors including but not limited to buyouts, facility upgrades, etc
  13. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

IU wouldn’t need a $20 million donation to buy out Tom Allen if IU had a competent AD to begin with as no competent AD would have fully guaranteed Allen’s $30 million buyout in the first place. The fact that Dolson is apparently good at coming up with the money to fix his mistakes is further proof that he has no idea what he’s doing as an athletic director and should no longer have a job, let alone be tasked with hiring another football coach. What experience or acumen does he have in that regard? Fred Glass? Again literal amateur hour in Bloomington. Thanks Josh for once again proving my point.

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

    1. I didn’t insult anybody 2. Who said otherwise? 3. Someone willing to contribute to Tom Allen’s buyout can’t/wouldn’t contribute to other athletic endeavors if buying out Tom Allen wasn’t on the table? Lol 4. So Cindy Simon-Skjodt hasn’t donated to other IU endeavors outside the $40 million AH face lift? Lol
  15. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

Why hire me when IU could just hire a competent AD with actual experience to begin with? A novel concept I know. Imagine passing over Pat Kraft or Chris Reynolds to hire Scott Dolson? Imagine hiring Fred Glass to run an athletic program and then letting him name his assistant as successor. Amateur hour…literally.
  16. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

My own guesses? More like common sense. Someone willing to contribute $20 million for Tom Allen not to coach anymore is also willing to contribute $20 million to other athletic endeavors when/if needed. What, some rich IU alum has waited his entire life to be the one to buy Tom Allen out of his ridiculously bad contract only to never be heard from again? That’s what you’re selling us? Stick to your day job.
  17. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

According to the resident fundraising expert, IU has a specific applicant pool for the Tom Allen buyout fund. According to the same resident fundraising expert, these donors ONLY contribute to buyouts, there’s no possibility their donations go to other athletic endeavors. By the way, as an AD, if you need a donor applicant pool that only contributes to coaching buyouts…you’re terrible at your job and probably shouldn’t have one going forward.

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

IU wasn’t impacted by player opt-outs (if at all) like several other B10 schools. Arguably the best defender in the country Micah Parsons didn’t play a down for Penn State that year.
  19. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

IU isn’t going to spend a dime buying out Allen, it’s all donor funded. And it will be a negotiated settlement paid out in one lump sum somewhere between $12-15 million.
  20. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

X and Y are the same applicants in this scenario, football/athletic donors.
  21. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

You’re not listening to what I’m saying. If someone or some group is willing to donate $20 million for Tom Allen not to coach again…that same someone or group is willing to donate $20 million to other athletic endeavors. Imagine if not needing $20 million to fire Tom Allen wasn’t on the table?
  22. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

Of course it could. If you can get someone(s) to donate $20 million to fire a terrible football coach you damn sure can get the same source to donate towards facility upgrades or a similar project. Imagine not needing $20 million to fire a bad football coach?
  23. IndyResident16

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

It’s an unnecessary amount of money that could be allocated several other places. Why not fire him then after the last season when the buyout was $25 million if it’s not a big deal? Clearly Dolson has to go out of his way to raise the money that would have (and should) be spent elsewhere.
