Transfer Portal w IU Interest
Papacap replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Goodman phoning in this analysis. Wow. Ballo isn’t a 3 point shooter? Thanks for that. And how lazy is it to ask what Mgbako’s percentage is and then say, I don’t know it but it’s not good. we do need to add shooters and if we don’t with our remaining spots, that could spell trouble. But come on man, show a little effort when you are an “expert”. -

True. And whether or not he can win with the talent is a huge question mark. But, I’m not sure he could do a lot better so far in the portal. -

With just Ballo and Rice? No. But I think Rice could be significantly better than X. And given that we had to replace Ware and X, it’s hard to imagine doing better than these two going into the portal. And adding in Carlyle, Tucker and whoever else does make us significantly better than we have been in terms of talent. That doesn’t mean Woodson will win at a high level. But he is certainly building a roster better than it has been. As long as we get a shooter or two with remaining spots. -

I’m no NIL expert but big names waiting seems….risky? I get the thought that fewer players means a higher possible NIL as teams panic. But, isn’t it possible that the big money goes and all that’s left is bench player money? -

Totally agree. But that’s also why I think these guys could be program changing. It’s not a high bar at this point. -

It’s true that Woodson is still coach and may screw it up again. But how far back are you going to say that these players are coming off the bench for IU? 25? 30? If IU adds Tucker, Rice, Carlysle, Ballo, and whoever else, that’s a huge upgrade in talent. -

A player can negotiate roles/minutes all they want. But they need to produce. If Tucker (or anyone) plays well enough to get minutes, fine. But if he doesn’t, he should sit. Now, if Woodson wants to risk his job giving minutes to non-producing players, that’s on him. But I doubt even Woodson is going to play someone just because he was “promised” minutes. -

Well, if we don’t recruit kids in the portal and Leal is a significant contributor, IU will suck once again. Guessing that’s funny? -

Apathy is the right word. IU is a bottom tier sports program. There are exactly two sports that the majority of people care about and IU sucks in both. Hopefully Cig raises the bar. But IU is just not relevant on a national sports scale. And cue the people saying how IU is great at some minor sport. -

I live near some UNC fans and while they aren’t saying Davis should be fired, they wouldn’t be unhappy if he was. They say he can’t win the big games. Yet, they were a little surprised when I told them earlier that I wanted Woodson gone. I honestly believe it’s because it’s been so long since IU was releasing on the national scene. Why would expect better? -

This is exactly right. When you are giving more money to a player like Leal, who should be playing when IU is either up or down by 25, then you know every other player on the roster is getting a pay increase. Or they would have tested the portal. -

It’s not Woodson’s job to get him shots…….. As has been pointed out,, Tucker and Perkins would be good additions, but still leaves a huge hole at outside shooting. I think it’s a pipe dream that Woodson would not start Galloway, so unless he is willing to go with one big, we will once again have a starting five that….cant shoot well. But still tons of time left, so let’s see what happens. -

Love the quote that it’s Indiana so missing the tourney is never OK. Unless you’re a ‘true’ fan and then it’s ok to miss it. -

Agree. If the dude says I want guaranteed starter minutes, then move on. But if he’s willing to compete for PT, great. -

A majority of IU fans have lowered the bar so low that if IU makes the tourney, he stays. In fact, “true” fans will tell us toxic fans…..I told you so. -

So, in a small sample size of the 10 IU fans that live around me, I made the comment that if Woodson doesn’t get the players to compete for a Big10 title next year (not win, be in the hunt I said), he better be gone. That was met with a bunch of them telling me my expectations were too high. That is what we are dealing with now. Too many fans who have had the bar lowered so much that simply making the tourney is good enough. This isn’t the 80s anymore, I’m told. Apathy, not anger, is the worst thing that can happen to a program. And that’s where too many fans are. -

I know none of these people personally. But there are times I feel like Dolson is the engineer on the space shuttle challenger team saying, we should not launch when it’s this cold because it’s not rated for this temperature. And everyone pats him on the head and says, thanks for your little insight. Now let the big boys make these decisions. And we saw how that turned out I may be all wrong on that. Just the vibe I get from forums. -

Is it a lack of seriousness or incompetence? I’m guessing both. And I’m not trolling here. There is clear evidence that IU has no ability to run a good football or basketball program. With the Cig hire, there is some hope on that front. Of course, given that IU football is a doormat program. Coaching hires are limited, so I’m looking forward to Cig But we have an average to poor basketball program. And have for over a decade now. I’m not saying we can snap our fingers and get any coach. But are choices shouldn’t lead to what we have seen. Until IU decides that it is serious about basketball success AND has the ability to do something about it, we will continue to be an also-ran basketball program. And I’m not saying the powers that be aren’t well meaning. I’m saying they are failing at running a high level Basketball program. -

Declining an NIT bid makes sense given we need to smash the portal. It also avoids an embarrassing home loss to some team that wants to win the NIT. Not to mention if some players bail on the NIT to enter the portal. I see no upside to the NIT for IU. And I blame Woodson for that. And maybe I’m just bitter but his bush league ejection to avoid having to sit there at the end of the game makes me madder than it should. What a freakin coward. -

So, if I’m understanding your point, IU fans are why we can’t recruit? Not the shitty basketball we play? And your logic is, IU has been terrible at picking coaches, so instead of finally going after a proven, winning coach, we keep Woodson because they might mess up again? Fans of elite programs laugh at IU fans for accepting bad results. It’s why IU is a bottom tier sports program. -

Agree. Expecting to make the tourney in Woodson’s 3rd year is proof some IU fans are toxic and not true fans.
