General Coach Candidate News
HoosierFan1994 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
A week ago I had seven guys listed as realistic (not a crazy dream) possibilities at Indiana (Alford, Beilein, Fife, Matta, Musselman, Oats, and Stevens). Base on your info it sounds like no to Alford, Beilein, Matta, and Oats. Stevens would have to be convinced and need some $$$ but could happen in the right situation. Is there anyone else that I am missing? I don't think guys like Billy Donovan, Tony Bennett, Chris Beard, or Jay Wright would leave their current places for IU. -

I feel like all the national media guys think he is coming back for one more year. They are usually wrong so I take that as good news. If what Pap said earlier is true, Archie is gone. Scott Dolson knew a year ago when he was hired that this day could come. It shouldn't be a shock that it's time to move on from Archie. -

Sounds like the owner of a team who hasn't won a playoff series in ten years. -

Just remember- the Hickory faithful did not approve of Norman Dale at first. All he did was beat Terhune and lead them to a state championship. -

Interested in his response for this question. Had Indiana not completely collapsed I would say he would be back. That being said, I find it hard to believe they can bring Archie back after this year. With the tournament in your home state...on your home court... Also this team is probably going to finish with 15 losses. That's about as many as we had in year one and we've played less games this season. -

In my head, Dane Fife is not one of my top 3-5 guys for the job. That being said, I'm learning to let things play out. I don't get excited anymore about a recruit committing. I made a comment earlier about going to the Seymour Regional in 2018 thinking TJD and Romeo would be the guys that lead us back. I was dead wrong there. I wasn't excited at all about Armann Franklin. I think he could be an All-American/NBA Draft Pick in a year or two. The same thing should apply to coaches. Archie Miller was a top 3-4 guy for the job in my head. I didn't want Fife back then. That being said, I want things to play out. I'm starting to think maybe an Indiana guy deserves the job. Look at Michigan and Purdue. I don't think Howard/Painter would be this good at other universities. Fife was awfully young when he took over IPFW. I think that hurt him because many will think he can't be a head coach. -

I wish Terry Hutchens was still around. He would probably write a good book about why the Archie Miller era did not work out. It's the greatest mystery to me. I thought it was a really good hire. I loved the way his teams played at Dayton. He was recruiting the state. I thought by year four this program would be back in the mix. -

I remember going to the 2018 Seymour regional watching TJD vs. Romeo thinking "these may be the two guys that bring Indiana back". Good players but was way off on that thinking. -

I said the same thing..he was acting like a middle schooler who wasn't getting playing time. He looks done. I think after last night I'll be shocked if he comes back next year. -

Keep in mind too that with players getting an extra year of eligibility there may not be room for them somewhere else. -

Right now I have 7 guys who I think could realistically be at Indiana: Alford Beilein Fife Matta-Depends on his health, he's only 52 though Musselman Oats Stevens-Depends on how hot his seat gets in Boston I think Stevens and Beilein would be home run hires. Matta (Depends on his health) and Oats would be very good hires. Maybe Musselman. Alford and Fife are your IU guys. -

I think it's possible Brad just wanted to be the Boston Celtics Head Coach. It's hard to say no to that. He probably grew up a Larry Bird fan. Boston is a dream job for any basketball coach at any level. -

I would agree with you. Love him majority of the time. He and Tirico were awesome when they did Big Ten games. I even enjoy him on the radio most of the time. I don't like it when he hangs up on callers mid-sentence. He made fun of a guy that wanted to email Dolson to "keep an eye on the situation in Boston". Dakich ripped him up. I know it sounds silly, but just it's just a passionate fan. No need to bash the guy. -

Thinking out loud...these are some of the qualities I hope the next coach has (again I think it's a matter of when not if) Relationship building- I thought Crean did a good job of this the first part of his tenure. Archie seems like a good guy. I'm just not sure if the players would run through a brick wall for him. I don't remember his players from Dayton saying anything when he left for Indiana. I also think Archie lost the trust of the high school basketball coaches in Indiana like Crean did. A coach that has teams that peak at the end of the season...when was the last time Indiana peaked in March? 2002? In 2013 they fell apart after the Michigan State game. They lost in the BTT in 2016 to 8 seeded Michigan. Toughness. Something we haven't seen in a while. -

Yes..all I'm saying is I think Alford is the "favorite". I think he could recruit the state well (however that doesn't mean crap after the last four years.) I think he would have more success than Archie for sure. I just think our ceiling would be like what Indiana was under Crean: Year 1 and 2: mediocre Year 3: A team talented enough to win a championship but underachieves in March. Rinse and repeat. I know lots on here don't like Dakich, but he makes some good points. I am curious to see how an Indiana guy would do. Purdue and Michigan are doing well with Alums coaching. Izzo and Gard are Michigan State and Wisconsin guys. Whatever hire is made in the future (I do think it's a matter of when not if) I just hope the fan base lets it play out. Could you imagine if Twitter and BTown Banners were around in 1971 when Indiana hired Knight? I don't know if many of us would have approved of it. I thought for the most part the fan base thought Archie was a good hire. He's been a massive bust-probably one of the biggest in college basketball history. -

My thoughts on how it could go...not necessarily how I want it to go. IF Indiana loses out the rest of the year, I think Archie is gone. I don't care what the buyout is, the program would make a change. I'm thinking these guys realistically. 1) Brad Stevens is the first choice. 4 years ago he was in a good spot with Boston. Now, not so much. I could see this happening. Question is would he resign in late March/early April? Could Boston fire him soon? Their season ends sometime in May. 2) If it doesn't workout with Stevens I think it is either Steve Alford or Dane Fife. I'm not crazy about either one, but it could be time they give an Indiana alum a chance. Considering Dolson was Alford's roommate I think this is right now the bet I would place on the person to be our next coach. I'm not 100% crazy about it. There were off the court issues at Iowa if I remember right. I would love to see Chris Beard at Indiana. I just think he is a "Texas guy" and wouldn't leave. He's in a better situation at Texas Tech right now. Indiana is not a better job than that. Tony Bennett and Scott Drew are in the same situation. Their job is simply better than Indiana's right now. Another name I will throw out there..Nate Oats. I think he would bring toughness to Indiana. Really eager to see what his team does in March. -

Agree. Why spend the $$ on a crap product? Why even watch? I'd say I've watched not even half the games this year. About 5 years ago-even with Crean- I didn't miss a game. -

And if I read this right..it's March 31 of 2022 when his buyout goes down. Look at the calendar, a lot of the time that is too late in the game. -

I'm afraid that the fan base is going to have to suck it up for one more year...you are right...no way will anyone donate if it's another Archie Miller or Tom Crean. -

Just want to make sure I'm reading this right...basically Scott Dolson has zero confidence Archie Miller is the guy. If that is the case, he needs to do everything in his power to move on after this season. -
I never root for anyone to lose their job. However, it is well beyond time that Indiana makes a change.

Game Thread: Minn at IU, Weds 9:00 on BTN
HoosierFan1994 replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I've been super busy lately (getting ready for our baby girl due in April) so I haven't been on here as much! I hope all at BTown Banners are doing well! Wanted to give a few thoughts about IU basketball. 1) These next four games are crucial for me to buy into Archie Miller as being the right guy at IU. Michigan State is a must win Saturday. I don't have much faith against Michigan other than to hopefully be competitive. That leaves @ Rutgers and @ Purdue. For petes sake, beat Purdue. It is time. Archie is just as bad against Purdue as Harbaugh is against Ohio State. 2) I'd like to see these things happen Win 3/4 four games to end the season (Michigan State and Purdue being must wins), win a couple Big Ten Tournament Games, and win your 1st Round NCAA Tournament game. I don't have much faith in all that happening, but I really want some momentum going into the 2021-2022 season. I really like this group of players that Indiana has. I think the culture has changed. The freshman/sophomore class seems really tight. If Trayce comes back next year (I'd lean yes), this could be a special group. Especially if Parker Stewart is the kind of player IU thinks he is. Problem is I don't have much faith in this coaching staff. I think I'm like most of you. I'm tired of being mediocre. I went about a month or so without watching IU play. I think the Northwestern game was the first one I've watched since the first Illinois game. I just hope this team can have a strong finish to the year.
