General Coach Candidate News

I think a big reason is he is the new number 1 on the hot board. He’s came out of nowhere in the last day or so. Wouldn’t it be pathetic if Marquette beats us in getting a mid major coach. Lol I’m iffy on Porter. -

Rabby says IU has made contact with these individuals: Stevens, Beilein, Matta, Woodson, and Cheaney. We all knew that. He also says he thinks IU reached out to Keith Smart. Says Porter Moser is a guy IU will talk to. Also didn’t killed the idea of Chris Beard. He thinks that there will be a few more head coaches they talk to-maybe Musselman or Altman. Basically, he has zero clue. Just wanted to pass along what he said, -
Wish the NCAA had stuck with the Thursday/Friday Sweet 16 schedule. I like having multiple games at once. I don't get why Sweet 16 games are starting at 10:00 eastern on a Sunday night....

Loyola has a good chance to make the Final Four. If they do, I'd be surprised if Moser leaves for another job. Who was the last coach to make the Final Four and leave for another job the next season? Roy? IF Moser does lead Loyola to another Final Four, I can get behind IU hiring him. My only point is that if they lost to Illinois we wouldn't be talking about him. That being said if he can get some wins this weekend (beat Oregon State and knock off Houston or Syracuse) that makes him a lot more attractive of a hire. It's hard to make a final four. Making two in four years is pretty good. -

I went back on Inside the Hall and found the candidate profiles for the '08 and '17 search. IMO, I think the '21 candidates are much better and much more realistic outside of Calipari, Pearl, Donovan, and maybe Stevens. '08: Calipari, Pearl, Bennett, Montgomery, Barnes, S. Miller, Crean, Grant, Brownell, Drew, Skiles '17: Donovan, Mack, Bennett, Holtmann, Alford, A.Miller, Marshall, White, Collins, B.Drew, Fife '21: Stevens, Beard, Beilein, Matta, Musselman, Atlman, Moser, Fife, Woodson, Lewis, Cheaney -

Geronimo is the only one who sounds like he is gone outside of Al. -

Exactly. Everyone forgets that the offseason is going to be wild with player movement. Who says the new coach, hope it's a home run hire, can't bring in transfers? -

Good news is there is a lot of fish out there. I'm not meaning to bash any of the guys in the portal, but we kind of knew Al was gone. Parker never even suited up for IU. Geronimo doesn't surprise me at all. Hope Armaan and Race come back. -
I think you are right. It just seems odds. I didn't like Leal's mom tweeting "play him" or Smith's dad running his mouth. It just creates disfunction.

Part of it may be the IU medias fault. But I don't remember this being an issue until a few years ago.

I’ll get flack for this but I’m not saying this to be mean but has it always been a thing for mommy’s and daddy’s to talk to IU reporters? I’m absolutely stealing this from Dakich but it’s almost like it’s an AAU program. I guess that’s how it is now.

It was impressive no doubt. But I’m sure Archie had his moments at Dayton where we all were impressed. I just don’t think a mid major guy is the move now. But yes Loyola certainly may make the final four again -

Bingo. Which is why I find it hard to believe it’s an IU guy. -

Dang I might need to listen later. All things aside the discussion is awesome. I'm on spring break so I love talking about IU hoops with everyone. A Mike Woodson, Calbert Cheaney, and maybe Porter Moser like hire would've made sense in 2000 when the program was in much better shape. It's not right now. They have to get this right. I just don't think you gamble on an unknown or another "hot name". They haven't made the tournament since 2016 (FWIW I was President of my college fraternity and just turned 21 in 2016. I am now married and about to have a baby in a month). They've lost 9 in a row to Purdue. They have zero momentum. -

To be fair, there has only been one tournament since that run. I agree he has a small sample size but I like his sample size. He upset Purdue at Little Rock in 2016. He took Tech out of nowhere in 2018 to the Elite 8. National Championship in 2019. Last year probably would have won a game in the tournament. This year they made the second round and lost to Arkansas but could have gone either way. -

This is a message board so I am just talking about candidates...I still find it hard to believe that Indiana bought Archie out for that price for a lateral move (to be fair, I'll put Moser a notch above Arch). I just don't buy it. IF, again this is just a discussion, IU hires a Moser, a Woodson, or a Cheaney, spare me with the "we want to annually contend in the B1G and the NCAA" that Glass and Dolson have said in the past. If you do, you don't hire these guys. Period. And outside of Moser, these other IU guys would've been hired by now. -

It is Goodman so take it for what it's worth but is there any coach, or human out there, that doesn't have skeletons in their closet? -

I'll give them a chance but let's call this what it would be-an emotional hire based off one factor. My cousin played for UE in the mid 2000s. They were awful. The one school they consistently beat was Porter Moser's Illinois State team. It's possible Moser got two really good players in Custer and Krutwig at Loyola. I could see a DePaul or Marquette hiring him due to Chicago connections. Not Indiana. Insert the Michal Jordan "stop it" GIF. -

I'm seeing Porter Moser's name on Peegs pop up. Did everyone not just learn their lesson with the "hot mid-major" guy? If Illinois beats Loyola on Sunday, we aren't talking about Porter Moser. If Calbert Cheaney, Mike Woodson, Dane Fife, and Michael Lewis aren't IU grads, we aren't talking about them. That's the problem with these 5 names...it's an emotional hire. You don't have a "philanthropic donation" for an emotional hire. -

Not dogging on you since you are stating what SD said but I don't understand this crap about "style" and "pace". The only style Indiana needs is to make the freaking tournament and win. It's been 6 years. Texas Tech did a pretty good job keeping up with Arkansas the other night for what it's worth. -

Yes it was between him and McCarty at UE. I saw I think Chris post he was #2 for IUPUI and UIndy. -

I felt that way about that too but honestly my preference is that Indiana wins...there have been three what I would call splash hires in the last 20 years in college basketball: Rick Pitino to Louisville (He had a pre-established reputation at Providence, UK and the NBA) Roy Williams to UNC (I get he went there but we was at Kansas for awhile.) John Calipari to Kentucky (He had a pre-established reputation at Memphis and UMass as well as the NBA. Each of these three have something in common: They have won National Championships (spare me 2013-Louisville won it). IU and UCLA get a lot of crap about replacing a legend. So far UConn has struggled since Calhoun left (Ollie had his team). Let's see how Duke, Syracuse, and Michigan State do after their HOF coaches leave. -

Inside the Hall has a nice piece on different candidates. They have 11 so far...I'm pretty sure Calbert would be number 11 on that list. I'm an Evansville guy and that would be an awesome story! Calbert is an awesome person. I met him after a game about ten years ago at Assembly Hall. Would love for him to be the top assistant. But in no way is he ready to be the Indiana Head Coach guys. If he isn't good enough for UE, IUPUI, and UIndy...come on....
