Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

What is exciting about him is his 3 point % went up big time at West Virginia. Small sample size but still. I'm guessing he is a 3/4?

Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

I'm hoping for a new roster and coaching staff which is likely. Sure, a few of the players will stay and maybe someone like Hulls. I remember Miller had to keep a lot of Crean's guys in year one. It was a much different era in 2017 (crazy to say that). I've always wondered how Archie would've done if he could have used the portal right away (I think we know the answer now). Woodson kept way too many Archie players and coaches around back in 2021.

I was there in person for that. They opened it up to fans that year. Looking back it's obvious he had no clue what he was getting himself into.

Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

That's what it's going to come down to for me. How does he handle a pissed off fan base/media after losing a home game in January or a rough stretch? Miller did not handle it well which probably caused them to lose 12/13 games. Also, I remember his silly rant at Lunardi that one year. That being said, it sounds like we have the guy that is going to work hard.

I don't think Small has elgibility left. I could be wrong but he was in the 2021 class. This is it for them right? Can't ever keep track.

Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Yep. Going to be a lot like UK, Louisville, and Michigan. Whole new team. I wouldn't be surprised if Goode, assuming he's back (some dude on Assembly Call think so), is the only returner. Sisley it sounds is coming regardless.

Hansberry, Harris, Powell possibly. Maybe a few of his recruits in '25. I'm interested to see how him leaving is perceived with the returning WVU players. Saw his point guard Javon Small post something. He doesn't have any eligibility left but can tell he isn't happy based on that. Which is understandable.

That was a great listen. Dude jumped in during practice for the scout team.

Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Last night I felt the same smoke we saw with Cig was happening with Devries. I looked more into him and called him a solid hire but not a home run. The more I've read, heard, and seen about the coach, I love this hire. 1) WVU and Iowa folks are big time mad. That's a good thing. I listen/watch McAfee (WVU guy) and he loved Devries. You should've seen his face when Thamel said today "When a job like Indiana comes, you have to take it. Like he didn't expect it. 2) West Virginia is a good job in a top 3 conference in the country. He really wants to be here. 3) My cousin played at UE in the MVC. Drake was usually, outside of one crazy year, at the bottom of the league with UE. Devries had six 20 win seasons there. Before Drake only had five 20 win seasons in their program history. WVU was a last place team in the Big 12. He turned that program around in one year. They absolutely should have been in. 4) Lots of college basketball experience at the mid-major level, Big East as an assistant, and Big 12 for a year. 5) His son can play. If healthy, he's going to be a top player on this team next year. I can understand the upset fans. Yeah, I wanted a proven P5 winner too. He isn't exactly that. But those guys normally don't leave for a job like IU. It sounds like he is a hard worker which is much needed. Will his personality work here? I felt for Archie it came crashing down in year 2 when they went on a crazy losing streak. He couldn't handle it. How's he going to handle a bad home loss in January when the entire fan base is pissed? TBD. Interested in who he brings for assistants. Some have Indiana ties (good and bad). I did research. Outside of his son, there are 3 guys with eligibility left he could possibly bring: Amani Hansberry (F-Transfer from Illinois), Sencire Harris (G-Transfer from Illinois), and Jonathan Powell (Freshman-Cupps HS teammate? Already in the portal). Solid HS class he had coming in. Two top 75 recruits (Braydon Hawthorne and Kelvin Odih).

I will say this...there is a Mystery Machine that drives around Evansville. Could it be the Evansville natives (Cheaney, Brownell) OR the guy who won 4 titles in Evansville (McCollum!) Or could it be the guy that hates our pizza (Stevens..link below) https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/2022/10/28/colts-qa-with-fox-play-by-play-voice-brandon-gaudin/69593607007/

Prediction: The Mystery Machine will meet our mystery candidate at the airport in Sellersburg and drive him to Bloomington tomorrow morning.

Those that have been around on boards longer than me (Was only on for the 2021 search): is this the most quiet things have been from IU's side? Thinking back to the Sampson, Crean, and Miller searches.

That is fair too. One thing I like is West Virginia has shown they can win in basketball. It's a very good job. If he comes here, it tells me that he REALLY wants to be here. I don't think that was the case with CMW.

Keep in mind with Devries that he has two very good trends that would show he is a very good hire: 1) 5 of his 6 years at Drake he finished in the top 2 of his league. MVC is a very very good mid-major. I've heard a lot of times it's a good sign that a coach has dominated their conference at the mid-major level much like McCollum and Pat Kelsey. 2) Drake was nothing special before he took over. Changed everything right away when he got there. WVU had as bad of a season for a P5 school a year ago. This year, much improved. I know a lot of us don't like it with how Archie turned out and I get it. I think if Devries personality fits here, it will turn out good for us.

Yeah, it's extremely odd Goodman keeps saying "mystery candidate". Covers all options for him. We shall find out soon.

Also Says McCollum and a third "mystery" guy still in the mix. LOL

Goodman reporting Devries has emerged as one of, if not the top candidate, for the IU job. Granted he did this for McCollum too.

haha. I usually share what he says with a buddy at work that is an IU fan. He laughs everytime because that is exactly what he says too.

That is true too but right before that tweet he mentioned something about leaving Morgantown for Bloomington.

Quick research on DeVries: 1) Won 20 games six straight years in a row at Drake. Before him, only five 20 win seasons... 2) In year one at Drake, they had their best season in a decade. In year one at WVU they went from basically a last place team to a respectable team that should have been in the tournament. Had his son been healthy, they very well could have been a top 25 team. He took over a mess at WVU. I'd love to see what he could do at IU. Not that he would be an A+ grand slam hire, but it would be a good hire.

Yeah I saw that earlier. I do wonder if it comes down to NIL for him. If so, Indiana wins that.

    General Coach Candidate News

I could be wrong...feels like with Devries it's the same level of smoke now just like the day before Cignetti was hired. I probably favor McCollum but Devries would be a nice hire. He rebuilt WVU in a year. They should have made the tournament. Had some nice wins. Mostly without his son.

Love that Osterman says no journalist knows anything. It would be him if anyone would. IMO that is how it should be. I don't think it's a good thing when there is news of too many leaks in a coaching search.
