Transfer Portal w IU Interest
HoosierFan1994 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I heard his name mentioned on the Hysterics podcast with Rabby the other day, but sign me up for Isaiah Swope. He is from Newburgh (righty next to Evansville). Played at USI and transferred to ISU. Basically played on one leg for most of the season. He easily could have opted out of the NIT. He's an outstanding player and sounds like a hard worker. I'm sure he is a big reason the culture changed at Indiana State. -

Crazy how these coaches can just put on a poker face. Jerome Tang was on Field of 68 last night talking about how great Kansas State is and it's such a basketball school. Now, it sounds like he is gone. -

Biggest thing I like about potentially adding Rice and Carlyle: 3 years of elgibility left. Can't do this every year with replacing more than half your roster. I know I've seen Carlyle on NBA mocks for next season. I also think the two of them will improve from 3. Based on his assist to turnover ratio I assume Carlyle is better at the 2 spot. -

247 and ESPN updated their portal rankings today. Carlyle is a consensus top 10 prospect. Rice is as well. Perkins was 15 on one and 37 on the other. I'd say those 3 guys are hopefully priority. It does seem like a "weaker" group this year. Amari Williams was a consensus top 50 prospect. ESPN had Hickman at 90. Leland Walker is just outside the top 100. Humrichous was one of the last ones ranked on ESPN, probably around 140. Do these rankings mean much? It depends. Everyone was right on Knecht, Ware, and others last year, but missed on guys like Timberlake. Lance Jones has had a pretty good impact at Purdue and I'm not sure he was top 100. Just a guess, guys like Walker and Humrichous aren't starters here. They may have to accept a role off the bench. Hickman I think is a starter here. Peegs did not list Thiero from UK or Blackmon on their list of guys IU is pursuing. I do know they've reached out to them. Call me crazy, but getting Hickman is almost as important as getting a Point Guard. He is a high volume high percentage shooter. My "Wishlist" on guys in the portal now: Myles Rice- I like that he has 3 years left. Nothing against Perkins. Hickman-NEED shooters. He is the best one of this group. Humrichous-If he can accept a role off the bench that is huge. I'd love to see a world where Galloway and Tucker come off the bench. It means this team has a lot of potential. Looking at last years "5 stars" I'd say of the 14 college players 5-6 of them came off the bench. In the get old stay old world you aren't a penciled in starter as a 5 star anymore. -

If that does happen I have to think IU has a good shot. 1) Like Ware, Bradshaw was a top 10 recruit with a disappointing freshman season. He had some injuries this year but I think he has a really good skill set. 2) I think he is from the same area Mgbako is from. Wonder if there is a connection there. -

This is a great post. Kind of how I feel. My hope is the roster situation is much better this time next year and Woodson steps aside. He's not the answer. Do I think we can be a top 25 team and maybe win a game in the NCAA tournament with him? Yes. I just don't think we can compete for Big Ten Titles and advance in the tournament with him. It's early but yeah, it's concerning to me that Indiana doesn't have a portal commit yet. -

I have been off the last few days so I'm just seeing this. This would surprise me. Don't get me wrong, I'd take him. He was a really good player of the Aces. I know fans here are really bummed about losing him. However, with Tucker, Mgbako, and Reneau at the 3/4/5 spots I wouldn't think he would want to be here. Kind of surprised he's not on 247's portal rankings. -

It's very likely his three point numbers improve. Very good player on a team that won a game in the tournament. -

I hope this staff is not operating under the impression that there is only one starting spot available, point guard. Need to land 2-3 impactful players. Only sure thing starters should be Mgbako and Reneau. I saw the Center from Louisville is visiting in a few weeks. Would assume Perkins is too. Portal is just so different. In NBA/NFL free agency you have an idea who is out there. We still don't even know who else will go portaling. Cam Spencer chose UConn in June. Grant Nelson chose Alabama in late June. Just a few examples from teams still playing in the tournament. If there are truly 4-5 spots up for grabs, I think Perkins is a take. However, need a 2 guard that can shoot it next to him. No idea if the center from Louisville is a take. I assume he wants to start. I am fine with Tucker starting if he is physically ready. He seems like a very good pick up! Just don't know enough about him yet. If Tucker starts that means your 3-4-5 spots are covered. Need a center obviously for backup purposes even though they will see plenty of time. -

IF I'm Indiana, I'm looking for a roster that has Galloway and Tucker coming off the bench. Unlikely, but that would tell me IU has a chance to be very good next year. Still HAVE to land a Point guard, a 3 point shooting guard, and a center. -
(2024) - SF Bryson Tucker to Washington via Portal
HoosierFan1994 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This kid and possibly Perkins is a great start. But IU has to get shooters, shooters, and more shooters. Even if a few of them come off the bench. I'm guessing if Mgabko is back it would be Tucker-Mgbako-Reneau with a rim protector that can come off the bench and play when needed. I'll have to watch more on Tucker but it sounds like he isn't considered a one and done 5 star which is nice. However, you never know. -

My portal wish list... 1) Point Guard. Throw $$$$$$$$ at them. Get the best one possible. Enough said. 2) Shooters, Shooters, and more shooters. Would be awesome to have multiple guys who shoot high volume 40% from 3. 3) Center. I personally would like to start Mgbako at the 4 and Malik at the 5. However, have a Center that can come off the bench and play 20-25 minutes a game. Mgbako/Malik at 4.. I'm okay with Mgako-Malik-Portal Center at the 3-4-5 at some times in the game. 4) Forward that can play the 3/4 spot off the bench. Maybe a good version on Anthony Walker?..not a jab at Anthony. He had some good moments this year. Staff can't go into the next season with the same mentality they had going into this one. They gave Xavier, CJ, Kaleb, and Sparks way too much credit. If Galloway has to be our 6th man because we have two sharp shooting guards, fine. If Cupps/Newton/Leal barely play because of upgrades, fine. Make them all earn it. Does any of this really matter with this coaching staff? Who knows. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
HoosierFan1994 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My biggest fear for next year..IU hits a "grand slam" in the portal. Woodson does just well enough to make the NCAA tourament. We maybe, maybe win a game. End up losing the majority of the team and have to do this all over again in 2025. Woodson gets a 5th year for sure. I said yesterday the biggest thing IU can do to win fans back over (outside the obvious, winning right now) is to get Mgbako/Reneau to come back (sounding positive) and start hitting on '25 kids. This summer. If IU has a few commits by the end of summer, that'll help. We can't keep living in portal land. Might work in 2025. But won't beyond. Ideally, you don't want 3 or more starters coming from the portal. I like the idea of Trey, Mgbako, and Malik starting with a new PG and C. Get a good wing to be your 6th man (one that can freaking shoot). Then add in Cupps, Newton, and a forward to be your reserves. -

I like Leal. I think he's a good guy. He's done a lot of good with his NIL money which is awesome to see. But a huge reason he is in this position is because of the fans that "have to chill". It's what makes IU special. Sure, there are knuckleheads out there. Every fan base has them. See Duke and Kansas fans this weekend. But I"m tired of the "Fans are the problem". Since the late 90's there have really only been about 5 seasons that have been good for IU. U fans show up no matter what. See 2008-2011. Heck, see Sunday to support two seniors who haven't been at IU for 4-5 years (X and Anthony). They better watch their words. I'm like many of you, not happy. I said some things I probably will take back. I'll always be an IU fan. But the arrogant comments yesterday by Woodson just leads me to think things won't change. I hope I am wrong. -

Sorry if it's been discussed but Tonsoni on Assembly Call went on a pretty good rant about Woodson's comments. I could tell he was really frustrated by it. Phillips had some good comments too. -

Yep. A few ways to win the fan base over: 1) Win the Big Ten Tournament 2) Get some major players in the transfer portal 3) Keep Reneau and Mgbako 4) Start getting '25 commitments 5) WIN...nobody will care what Mike Woodson or Anthony Leal said yesterday a year from now if IU just goes out there and wins. It's simple. Fans are tired of mediocre basketball. In the last 7 years only 1 season where IU comfortably made the tournament. -

I know nobody likes Dakich and I understand why. However, his tweet about this is spot on. It's been 3 years. IU isn't competing for Big Ten and NCAA titles. IU is 31-29 in the Big Ten over the last 3 years. That is incredilby mediocre. The fans are tired of it. I like what Trey did. Get up there, thank people, and lets win the d**n B1G Tournament. Don't divide the fan base. -

Well...what an absolute crappy 24 hours it's been. I think the combination of the two events has been the breaking point for me. I'm normally not a "email the board" kinda guy but I felt the need to tonight. Is it going to matter? No. But I am more than happy to let them know how pissed off I am and contribute to their emails flooding up with other pissed off fans. I'm always going to be an IU fan. I just am losing the passion that I've had over the last few years. I won't be going to games. I won't be buying merchandise. I probably won't be watching many games either. It's so sad. They're taking advantage of this great fan base (By the way what a crock of **** that the fan base is getting blamed for this.) BTown Banners is awesome and I plan on coming on to complain with most of you. I hope there is a day when Indiana is back on top. I'm sure afraid we are headed for another 2008-2011 type of seasons. -

I'm sorry but if Dolson has Bruce Pearl lined up and ready to go, no way Woodson is back. Buckner can cry about it all he wants but they would lose this program. I would support other IU varsity sports. I'd find another college basketball program to support too like a USI or UE...this is ridiculous and I can't believe it is actually a serious conversation. Bruce Pearl...a man whose track record shows he could turn this program around, wants to come here. But we want to keep a guy who has zero momentum? I think the pressure will only get worse..especially if they lose these next few games.
