Yogi Ferrell - Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (Montonegro)
TXHoosierDaddy replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Hoosiers in the Pros
Yogi ended up doing better than what Dallas was offering - great for him. It does suck he is going to a disfunctional franchise that has a lot of guards but at least he is getting $$$. -

Lewis seems more interested in staying in the SEC from everything I have read. -
Yogi Ferrell - Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (Montonegro)

He took less by not accepting qualifying offer. I think he was pissed that by doing that the Mavs didn't guarantee his second year. Basically, Mavs got the best of both worlds in this situation. If Yogi was going to take less they should have made a concession and given him 2 guaranteed years. Otherwise, they could just cut him after this year and lose nothing. -

Well who knows if a Memphis commitment is on the horizon. This is kind of contradictory. -

The Penny Hardaway and Mike Miller effect. We played in the league a long time and can get you there as well. I bet this is the start of something that lands a lot of big time recruits. -
I agree it's how the Celtics got so good although that trade was incredibly lopsided from the onset. Spurs probably could have made this deal if Kawai hadn't been so outspoken about going to the Lakers after this upcoming season. Teams don't want to sacrifice future for a one year rental especially when Golden State will still be better than them even with Kawai (Boston being the only exception here). And yes, Spurs will have to add another star when most hit free agency next season. They at least are a more attractive option with Derozan there versus getting basically nothing for Kawai.
-
The Spurs weren't going to trade him to the Lakers. They are ultimately hoping he stays out East so they don't have to face him every year unless they were blown away by an offer. Also, the Lakers pretty much said Kuzma was off limits. I'm not sure what the Clip or Sixers could have offered. Sixers obviously weren't going to trade Simmons or Embid and Fultz seems like a huge risk this early in the game. Clip seemed like they had a disfunctional roster although just invested in two 1st rounders this year.

I do see the comparison to Wiggins and agree the stats look good but the advanced numbers don't lie. Two things: 1) lets see what he does with a competent coach like Pop. Toronto was always so guard oriented. Maybe now he can work inside out with guys like Pau Gasol and that might improve those numbers as well as being in a more structured system. 2) My reason for thinking the Spurs did well, which is what I described above is Kawhi made it almost impossible to get a full return on him. The fact he might sit out, has this phantom long-term injury, and publicly stated he wants to go to the Lakers makes it hard for a team to invest the type of package you mentioned. Spurs obviously weren't going to trade him to the Lakers. That really only leaves Boston in my mind that could have come up with a package around Jaylen Brown, 1st round pick next year, Terry Rozier? It just seemed like the Spurs had very limited options in this regard.

Isn't a good player? Where do you get that from? He didn't show up in the playoffs but he seems like a really good player to me. Not a superstar by any stretch like Kawhi but a guy you can build around. He's definitely overpaid. I'm not sure what you could gotten that is better than him if you're the Spurs given the situation. I think they did very well.
-
Where do you think they could have gotten more? I'm honestly surprised they got an all-star back in Derozan. Figured most teams would shy away from providing a star just because Kawhi has been so outspoken about free agency after this year and wanting to go to the Lakers. Its a big gamble for Toronto.
-
Uh yeah. Why did Toronto make this move? Kawhi is unlikely to stay in Toronto unless Drake can really put the sell on. Otherwise, its just one season of a guy and a team that has no chance of even winning the East imo.

Avery Short has also decommitted. This was probably our best recruit for '19. He likely would have gone pro given he will be a high draft pick so I take this with a grain of salt. It appears the bleeding has stopped for now. I think we are down to 6 HS recruits for next year (not including JUCO or transfers) and because of that our ranking is in the 70's/80's which is not unexpected with a coaching change. We didn't lose a lot from last year's roster, which is a huge blessing given this transition. -

(2019) PG DJ Carton to Ohio State
TXHoosierDaddy replied to KDB's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Just my opinion but point guard comes down to Phinesee. Green may be a better player this year but I just can't see him developing into a true PG given his style. For rim protector, it comes down to Forrester. Deron won't be healthy to start the year. Clifton seems like a perimeter guy who won't bang much and Race is only what 6"7-6"8? Not sure he fits that description although I have hopes he will contribute. -
(2019) PG DJ Carton to Ohio State
TXHoosierDaddy replied to KDB's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
He just transferred to OSU after this last season at Florida State so he will be eligble for 19-20' season I believe. -
Franklin and Newman are both Indiana boys right? Seems like we would have a realistic shot at either of them.

Add Julian Greenwall to this list as well. So hard to find recruiting info on these guys to know which ones might be bigger losses than others. It looks like Lile was a class of '21 commit and has already chosen Louisville. -

Isn't it a little premature to make such a statement without seeing Phinesee yet in an IU uniform? Or is it the fact he wasn't a top 50 player automatically negates that he can't be a stud? I remember certain PG's like Tre Burke and Aaron Craft being total pests in the BIG and the ideal PG you want on your team that can take you to the national title game . Oh yeah and both were ranked similarly to Phinesee coming out of high school. -

Another point - Any time we lose a big time recruit perspective goes out the window. How about the fact that Archie is in on all these 5* recruits? Losing big time recruits is going to happen more often because we are in on many more than we are accustomed to. With Crean, we weren't anywhere near where Archie has already positioned us in recruiting and he's only had one season under his belt. -
(2019) SG Brandon Newman to Purdue
TXHoosierDaddy replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Okay time to turn up the heat on Newman!!! At least Archie doesn't have to waste time on Carton anymore...he can really focus on Newman and Franklin. Both guys offer plenty of upside and have many P5 offers. -

I think anyone in their right mind would still take Newman, TJD, Watford/Brooks so lets see how things play out over the next few months. I agree this hurts but this is the same exact reaction folks had to Garland with the world being over and look what happened with Romeo after that. -

Still a gut punch since 1) its OSU and Holtmann 2) A significant drop off from the next best PG that we have a shot with TJD thought would be a killer -

Oops I included Carton in that. Him being close with TJD I almost feel like he's in our backyard. My bad. -

Have to at least get one of TJD and Brooks. Can't get swept with 3 top 20 players in state especially losing to other BIG schools. -

Crap where did this come from. Hoosier Guy basically told us all it was between Mich and IU :). That official visit must have been something else...hate having to go against this kid every year. Now worried about TJD....
