And exactly what did he say that would eliminate either?
-
I'm all for Marshall. No selling to me needed.
-
I respect all your opinions on Marshall. I get the resemblance factor too. It's not a deterrent for me though. His record speaks for itself for me. I wanted him when we hired Crean. Albeit coming from Winthrop would have been a huge stretch to a place like IU tho. Now, he's proven himself more. That said, I'd take Billy, Tony, Gregg over what we have any day. Heck, I'd even be happy with Alford over what we have. Just not over other options. lol
-
Anyone who would be upset with Gregg Marshall, yet be happy with Archie is either drunk or blind to facts. All Gregg has done at both stops is WIN, WIN, WIN. You cannot deny what he's accomplished. Billy has 2 rings, Tony has he been to a FF?, Gregg has 4 out of past 5 with 30 wins. Name another coach who's won 30 games 4 of the last 5. Heck, name one who's won 30 games 3 out of past 5 seasons? Gregg would be a home run hire, mark it down.

It's normal for fans to panic. Heck, we've been stuck with this mediocre coach 4 seasons longer than anyone wanted him. So no news about his dismissal is unsettling to all. Other programs understand the need to move on and haven't hesitated to make it public, see Illinois, Missouri, & NC State. They all served notice that mediocre isn't good enough and put their fans at ease as far as knowing a change is coming. Just that notice alone would make all Hoosier fans decade. C'mon Glass, you'd become the most loved person in the state, at least until you announce the new coach and his name is not Billy, Gregg or Tony.

Brian Gregory record at GA Tech 76–86 (.469) 27–61 (.307) Shocked he was fired for that lousy record. Crean is dumber than I thought.
-
Really think we all need to send Glass a box of tampons daily until he gets the point...........he has no balls.
-
I say we all mail a bag of peanuts to Glass office starting the day it's announced he's returning.
-
For all those Archie lovers, I have recently spoke to those who are connected to him at Dayton, he does like to NOT play the booster game and has no interest in doing so. He'd rather stay in his basement and take in hoops as he's a hoops junkie. Just saying, just because the guy can coach doesn't mean he's the right fit for a place like IU.
-
Not condoning Marshall's action, but have any of you read the background as to "why" he went off? Or did you just watch the video? Wasn't Wilson fired because of forcing players to play hurt? Or humiliating them in the locker room? And even more serious accusations? As far as the Marshall moment of crazy, did any of you read this article about it? http://www.sbnation.com/2016/8/10/12421760/college-basketball-video-wichita-state-gregg-marshall-ejection-referees

So saw a post on another site mention that, guys like Cal, Roy, Coach K, and Self all win at a high level, but they also do it with a team full of McD AA's. They win despite their inefficiencies as a coach. When you compare what Stevens did at Butler and what Marshall has done at WSU, one would see that those guys have coached their collective butts off to take lesser quality players, WSU has likely no future NBA guys on this years team and yet here Marshall is still just winning again. 4 out of last 5 seasons with 30 wins. 6 straight NCAA appearances. Everyone likes to rail on him being in a lesser conference, hence it being easier. Phoooey, that means 2-3 teams tops make it out of the MVC yearly. Sometimes, just 1. Where as the BIG can have a mediocre 7th placed team get in. His teams dominate that conference. They don't just win by 5 pts a lot of times. They've got many games with 15-20 point wins. If it's that easy to win, why aren't others dominating? His age does not scare me. He's 54. By comparison Coach K is 70, Roy W is 66, and Jim Boeheim is 72. He's got 10-15 years left in the tank minimum. Go with Archie we might just be Crean 2.0. Then we've wasted another 6 years+ to get there. I'd rather go with the proven track record of solid D and team fundamentals over 1 year flash in the pan Elite 8 run any day.

Relax, in the next week after it's announced Brad Stevens is the new Indiana basketball coach, everyone will breath a collective sigh of relief.
-
Loads of the same stories out of Iowa when he was at the helm there. Haircuts at the local barber and even about a John Deere tractor being delivered and he thought it should be free because he was Steve Alford. Great player 30 years ago for IU. No thanks as a coach. I'd take Damon Bailey before him. Humble down to earth guy, plus he's got a budding superstar son at BNL this year.
-
He managed to land Kyle Guy an Indiana boy, which you know who, couldn't do.
-
Why is Micah Shrewsberry, a Celtics Assistant Coach commenting on Tom Crean?? Anyone else find that weird?
-
Would think Crean will be pissed. So it'll be visible evidence about what's going on. Will hit up a source very, very close to the situation and see what they have to say.

Marshall's style of play is fun to watch. They play D as well as any in the country and he can flat out coach. If not for crap calls 3 years ago vs UK, they would have likely been riding to the Final Four again, but instead they played the NCAA championship game in the 2nd round. And he does it with 2nd & 3rd tier players. I get the youth idea others mention too about Archie, but I don't care about 10-15 years out of him if it translates to Crean 2.0. One mentioned Archie would be as good as his brother Sean. Where's that guarantee at? He might flame out and suck at IU too. We'd all be ecstatic over Donovan or Stevens. After that, it's a crap shoot. Heck Donovan or Stevens either one could land at IU and never make a FF. I'd agree they'd both have better chances having been there before, but when it comes right down to it getting to a FF is about talent, matchups, and coaching. Some times coaching wins out (Stevens). Some times better talent wins out (In Cal's case). Some times it's all about matchups (the 2002 IU run helped that Duke was the main stud team we faced and was very talented). Others it's a combination of all 3. Only 4 do it every year. End of the day, I want a coach who can pull a consistent 1st,2nd,3rd place finish every single year. If they can do that, they'll compete for FF's and NCAA titles. Crean couldn't coach a 5th grade team to victory in the 3rd grade league consistently.
-
I foresaw all of this the day Crean was hired. I was not impressed with his hire. Last name anyone ever expected. I looked at his Marquette record and that was all I needed to know. Needed a future NBA All-Star to finish 1st or 2nd in the mighty Conference USA. 7 out of 9 seasons finished with double digit losses, only 2 were DWade years, imagine that. See any correlation here?? Outside of age, I still don't see why everyone is so luke warm about Gregg Marshall. All the guy does is win. I don't care if it's the MVC. His teams have finished 1st 11 out of 19 years and 1st or 2nd 16 out of 19 seasons. By comparison, Mark Turgeon, who preceded him at Wichita State, finished 1st once and 2nd twice out of 7 seasons. It wasn't like he dominated the MVC. I will stop the love for Marshall, cause clearly I'm in a small percentage. I'd settle for Donovan DWS. I know this article is not quite 3 years old, but tells the story plenty that IU isn't in this writers top 20 programs over the past decade 2005-2014. And the past 3 seasons would elevate IU any higher. C'mon Freddie boy, pull the trigger.
-
Same here. Why all the love for Archie? Good coach. Has a brother who's a good coach. How many times has he won an outright conf title? Donovan I get 2 rings says enough. Marshall 11 first place finishes and 1 FF. Explain the Archie love?
-
Not saying I want Jim Larranaga, just saying I want a coach who can take the hand that was dealt by graduation, attrition, injuries, etc. and turn them into a TEAM and do what no one expects. Winning 10 games in the ACC with recent wins @Virginia and vs Duke. http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/greg-cote/article135044029.html Be that personal Archie Miller who took no one over 6'6" and went to an Elite Eight or Gregg Marshall who takes kids no blue blood wants and goes out and simple wins his conference nearly every year. A Donovan or Stevens would be great, but it ain't happening folks. Finding that young next great coach is not that simple. There are too many borderline good to great coaches out there to compete against for talent. Give me a coach who understand recruiting the state of Indiana is #1a. Running a clean ship is #1b and building a "TEAM" concept centered around Defense is #2.

Wow, 13 first place finishes is pretty stinking good. Tell me who has won more at any conference in the past 19 years? If the NCAA hadn't placed WSU in with UK 3 years ago, they'd likely be the last remaining undefeated team in the NCAA's not IU. His teams play solid D and they score a lot of points normally too. You can argue the A10 is better than the MVC, but both have been pretty solid in the top 5-6 teams the past 9 years. To win the MVC what will be 5 out of the last 6 years, is impressive. Besides, he's taken a mid major to the NCAA (this will be 6 straight) where it's usually 2-3 teams making it. Where as the BIG usually has 7 minimum and Crean will have missed 2 out of the last 4. Throw on top of that, his Shockers beat IU's Crean 2 years ago en route to a Sweet 16. Still not sold on Archie. He's only been a head coach for 6 seasons. He's done well with what he's had, but there have been several other mid major's make it to the Elite Eight. 2006 - Memphis & George Mason 2007 - Memphis, 2008 - Davidson, Memphis & Xavier, 2010 - Butler, 2011 - VCU & Butler, 2013 - Wichita State 2014 - Dayton, 2015 - Gonzaga Would I be happy with him? Sure, he's better than Crean, but his track record does not hold up like Marshall's. Just saying............
-
Marshall was my choice 9 years ago when we got Clappy. Now when he's taken 2 separate teams in two different conferences and not just competed but dominated. In 19 seasons (this included) his teams have finished 1st - 10 times (on verge of 11th this year), 2nd - 5 times, 3rd - 1 time, 5th - 1 time, 9th - 1 time. He has had 8 straight seasons of winning 25+ games. Been to the NCAA tourney 12 times (on verge of 13th this year). He's done all this with no one rated higher than #63 by ESPN. Marshall's biggest detractor is his age, as he turns 54. That said, I'd be perfectly happy with Donovan, Miller, Bennett, or Marshall. All would be serious upgrades over Crean.

key word there "periodically"

Seriously, have you ever seen a college coach with a 2-3 inch pile of papers they shuffle through every single game? Substitution timings? Is it menu's of restaurants in the area?
-
Only coach in college basketball that has to have "how to coach for dummies" at every game.
