My crimson-colored glasses allow me to envision Lewis already thinking along those lines and waiting patently, declining some offers along the way. I actually think it was a review of getting the game clock EXACTLY right for the second time in about as many possessions after Nebraska made the bad inbounds pass that led to OSU’s final possession. I remember thinking it’s crap that Holtmann used all their timeouts essentially without the consequence of not being able to set up a final play. I could be wrong, though. This makes me wonder if they would ever institute something in the particular scenario that would keep things the way they were intended. Getting a free timeout has the potential to affect the outcome of the game although there’s no way to ever prove it. Some could also argue that both teams get to use that time equally. It just irks me that a team who burned all of their allotted timeouts still gets to utilize more than ample strategy time, often longer than a typical timeout, while officials have a convention at the scorer’s table. Maybe the 5 players on the floor should be required to stand under their basket instead of going to their benches. Yes, coaches could still communicate from the bench but that wouldn’t be much different than the likes of in-game communication from coach to player. I agree for the most part, with the exception that Mike Lewis was a hell of a competitor who earned enough of the staff’s respect from that aspect of his game alone. Additionally he was willing to lead and actually went out and made an effort to actively play better and harder. He was engaged in what Knight had to say to him after the scrum, then went back out there and did the dang thing. Probably not advisable to get in Knight’s face (even though he probably deserved it), but he and Knight both knew it was from a place of fierce competitiveness and something would come of it. Not saying HS kids should get a pass for it (they should get a swift kick in the attitudes so they don’t turn into Miller Kopp), but college players, especially upperclassmen, have zero excuses and much higher expectations to conduct themselves as men. Maybe Kopp has yet to realize this but he’s soon to enter REAL adulthood. He’s needs to quit acting like a boy and get over himself before he ends up somewhere that doesn’t give a crap if he played big ten basketball and puts the hammer on him faster than he can log on to his instagram.
