Barrington hires former Indiana, NBA guard Greg Graham BARRINGTON (RI) --- A proud Hoosier and former NBA first round draft pick will call the Barrington boys basketball sidelines home in 2016-17. Eagles’ athletic director George Finn confirmed Wednesday the school has hired Greg Graham as its next coach. A 6-foot-4 guard for Bob Knight at Indiana during the early 1990s and 17th overall selection by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1993 NBA Draft, Graham most recently served as an assistant coach at Salve Regina after family considerations resulted in a move from the Midwest to Rhode Island. “We’re just trying to lay down some roots,” Graham said. “Getting a job at Barrington and being the high school basketball coach wasn’t something I imagined would happen, but it did.” “The school district’s excited to have him as a part of the program,” Finn said. “He loves basketball. We believe this is a great fit for us.” Graham played for four different teams during his five NBA seasons and served as head coach at Warren Central – his alma mater – for seven seasons through 2014-15. He compiled an 80-74 record with the Warriors, including three appearances in the Marion County tournament championship game. “It’s still teaching,” Graham said. “It’s still molding. It’s still developing. It’s still inspiring. The kids are still passionate. It’s not a job like it is in the pros and it’s not as demanding as it is in college. “High school is competitive, but it’s fun. The kids enjoy it. They love to do it. Being a high school coach, all those factors that I listed before are exactly why I love to do it.” Barrington won the regular season R.I. Interscholastic League Division I championship and reached the boys state tournament final in 2014-15 before falling on hard times last season, slumping to a 6-17 overall mark. All-State guard Corey Daugherty moved on to Brown, rising senior big man Matt DeWolf opted to enroll at Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) and head coach Patrick Sullivan resigned in late January for family reasons. “The biggest thing for us was to get a new coach in place early on so we can get prepared as kids get ready for summer,” Finn said. “They know what’s going on and can really focus on getting ready for next season the Monday after Thanksgiving.” Graham and his family relocated to the East Coast after his wife, Nicole, accepted a promotion within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They live in Warwick with their 3-year-old son, Gregory II, and Graham certainly sounded like someone at ease with his new surroundings after moving to his new home just 10 short months ago. “Not that Indiana’s all bad, but we’re not surrounded by water,” Graham said. “We don’t have beaches. We definitely don’t have fresh seafood.” Finn is no stranger to making a high-profile boys basketball hire. Former Barrington coach Jim Dickinson was an All-Stater at Lincoln before enjoying a four-year college career with Seton Hall in the early 1990s, a golden age for a program coming off an NCAA Tournament title game appearance in 1989 under P.J. Carlesimo. “Immediately what comes in is the respect of his basketball knowledge,” Finn said. “You’ve got a coach who’s been with the sport literally all his life and he’s coming in with some great experience that he’ll be able to share with the kids.” bkoch@providencejournal.com

IUwbb adds Curtis Loyd as asst.
Class of '66 Old Fart replied to mamasa's topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
IUWBB: Assistant Curtis Loyd leaving IU staff Assistant Curtis Loyd is leaving Indiana’s coaching staff, according to head coach Teri Moren. “We appreciate the contributions Curtis made to our program over the last two seasons,” Moren said in a statement. “Curtis is currently exploring other coaching opportunities and we wish him and his family well.” Loyd joined IU’s coaching staff in May 2014, hired by former head coach Curt Miller off of Minnesota’s staff. Miller abruptly resigned in July 2014, and Loyd was appointed interim head coach. Loyd was kept as an assistant by Teri Moren when she arrived in August 2014.. Loyd is from Dallas, and his Texas connections were a big reason why the Hoosiers were able to land 2016 recruits Ria Gulley (San Antonio, Tex.) and Bre Wickware (Corinth, Tex.). While at Minnesota, Loyd helped recruit All-Big Ten players Rachel Banham and Amanda Zahui B. This is the second assistant coach to leave IU this offseason. Todd Starkey, who came to IU in 2014 from Division II Lenoir Rhyne, took the head coaching job at Kent State in April. Moren tabbed former Wisconsin guard and IUPUI assistant Janese Banks to fill the vacancy. Not sure what this is all about, but clearly he's not immediately moving on to a position with another program. Has some solid recruiting credentials so wouldn't expect him to be unemployed very long. -

A little Monday morning humor to get the work week started. While old Norm picked on Syracuse, he could just as easily subbed in UNC, L'ville; pUKe, SMU, to name just a few. By Norman Chad May 22 at 1:01 PM Syracuse University, perhaps the nation’s premier institution of higher learning in terms of balancing academic excellence with athletic achievement, has announced it will offer the first-ever U.S. bachelor’s degree in sports analytics. “Moneyball” is now a teachable moment, at the yearly cost of $43,318 in tuition and fees. Beginning in August 2017, students at Syracuse will get a chance to acquire a “deep understanding of math, statistics, research methodology, sport economics, database management, finance and computer programming integral to sport analytics.” Boy, what a babe magnet that’s going to be. The program also includes a mandatory foreign language requirement, largely to prepare its students to better comprehend Mel Kiper Jr. in the months leading up to the annual NFL draft. Data uber-wonk Nate Silver, a 2000 graduate of the University of Chicago, announced he was voiding his B.A. in economics and immediately enrolling at Syracuse “to earn the degree I was put on this Earth for.” The sports-analytics initiative indicates the forward thinking Syracuse often has demonstrated in regard to academics and athletics. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for data analysts is growing at 27 percent; data analysts also score remarkably well at Match.com and eHarmony. And, of course, analytics is a boom industry in the sports world right now – heck, just this month the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes hired as their general manager a 26-year-old numbers nerd who last year was playing EA Sports’ “NHL” most weekday evenings. Syracuse is so ahead of the curve, it also plans to offer the nation’s first degree in “sports misconduct” – concentrating on Division I transgressions – allowing the university to lean heavily on its own real-world experiences. That program will include the following courses of study: Failing to Promote Compliance of NCAA Rules. How to ignore NCAA regulations and avoid NCAA scrutiny for a decade or longer. Jim Boeheim, instructor. Intro to Coaching While Suspended. An examination of new-age techniques of keeping tabs on your team from home, undetected, with emphasis on burner phones. Jim Boeheim, instructor. Violating Your Own Written Drug Policy 101. Up-close examples of how student-athletes can test positive for drugs up to three times and remain eligible. Jim Boeheim, instructor. Declining Comment on Ongoing Investigations. A P.R. tutorial on crisis management, informed by the Orange basketball coach’s stock phrase, “I don’t know anything about it.” Jim Boeheim, instructor. The Art of the Self-Imposed Ban. How a school can get ahead of its repeated malfeasances by punishing itself before the NCAA limps in. Former athletic director Daryl Gross, instructor. Providing Improper Benefits to Student-Athletes. Weekly seminar to be held on-site at YMCA of Oneida, N.Y.; features free gym membership for first 90 days. Oneida YMCA CEO Hank Leo, instructor. Intro to Institutional Plausible Deniability. Ways and means for top administrators to act as if nothing is wrong. Former chancellor Nancy Cantor, instructor. Assistant Coaching Under Duress. Graduate-level workshop explores problem-solving for beleaguered assistants, such as how to counterbalance a sex probe with layup drills. Bernie Fine, instructor. Receiving Improper Assistance on Coursework. As a rule, you should never resubmit a subpar paper too quickly – this raises a red flag. Fab Melo, instructor. One-and-Done. The ins-and-outs of getting the most out of the university in a single year, or a single semester. Carmelo Anthony, instructor. Navigating the Criminal Justice System In Case Of… An A-to-Z guide for the cosmopolitan student-athlete – from selection of a legal team to finding a “fall guy” – in the event of assault, battery, DWI/DUI, drug possession, drug trafficking, prostitution solicitation, grand larceny, money laundering, shoplifting, harassment or disorderly conduct charges. Derrick Coleman, instructor; Cris Carter, guest lecturer.

Frank Vogel’s deal with the Magic is four years, approximately $22 million, per source. Same per year salary as Portland gave Terry Stotts and more than twice what the Pacers were paying. Thanks Larry!

Jess Walter leaving IUWBB
Class of '66 Old Fart replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
Wish her well and hope it's the right decision for her. Sophomore guard Jess Walter announced Wednesday via Twitter that she is transferring to Nebraska Omaha. Walter, who announced she was leaving Indiana the day after the Hoosiers were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, originally committed to Northern Kentucky in April. But when head coach Dawn Plitzuweit left the Norse to take the head coaching job at South Dakota, Walter reopened her recruitment. Walter averaged 2.8 points in 16.4 minutes per game in 2015-16 for the Hoosiers. Omaha finished 15-15 last season and 7-9 in the Summit League. The Mavericks did not receive a berth into any postseason tournaments. -
In today's world of college athletics, I suppose the following shouldn't come as a huge surprise but Jess Walter, sophomore guard announced she's leaving the program. She averaged 16 min./game and 2.8 pts/game. With virtually everyone coming back plus competition from incoming recruits, not likely her minutes would increase. Hate to see her leave the team, but hopefully she'll find what she's looking for. Many thanks for her contributions and wish her nothing but the very best.

Dayton xfer G Amber Deane to IUWBB
Class of '66 Old Fart posted a topic in Indiana Women's Basketball
Amber Deane - the Hoosiers look at the 5-foot-9 guard as a possible graduate transfer for the 2016-17 season. Deane played nine games for the Flyers in 2015-16, averaging a team-high 15.3 points per game. Her season was cut short in December by a left quadriceps injury. Deane had an extremely productive career as a Flyer. She started all but two games her first two seasons and was the Atlantic 10’s Rookie of the Year in 2013. Deane went on to score 1,194 points and hit 48.6 percent of her shots in 104 games. In her final three seasons, she converted better than 80 percent of her free throws. We currently have 2 scholarship openings. Full story on Deane: http://scoop.hoosiershq.com/2016/05/iuwbb-hoosiers-hosting-possible-grad-transfer-amber-deane/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter -

Indiana Baseball @HoosierBaseball Tonight's game has been pushed up to 5:30 p.m. 30 minutes earlier from original start time. -
Well that was short and apparently not so sweet. From 247: Multiple sources tell 247Sports that Oklahoma is parting ways with transfer Austin Grandstaff, a former Top247 four-star recruit who had arrived in Norman in January after starting his freshman season at Ohio State. In 10 games at Ohio State, Grandstaff averaged 4.4 points per game in 11.5 minutes per game. He shot 33 percent from behind the arc. Grandstaff was the No. 14 shooting guard in the class of 2015, per the 247Sports Composite, and the No. 54 player overall. The Rockwall (Texas) product was a prolific scorer averaging 29 points per game as a senior in high school, shooting 33 percent from three-point range.
