I think it is something you can and should evaluate every season. If Crean lands Bryant and he, Yogi, and Troy take us to this weekend next season I would say no to a change. To be fair, I really don't believe Stevens or Donovan are dying to come to IU. We would have to make either a top 3 paid coach ($4.1 million +) just to better their current salary. And those are long-terms deals. There is also the buyout issue. Lots of variables that change from year to year.
-
That's very fair. Well put.
-
Not to mention a guy who has yet to coach a game with his own players. At least Mike Davis parlayed that to the Final Four. Count me out...
-
Sometimes you get what you deserve I guess. Can you imagine having to train a guy like Archie Miller on the job in the Big Ten?
-
"Because you're looking small time while I'm looking big picture. I'm not letting one season with a #1 ranking where we crapped the bed down the stretch overshadow his entire career as a mediocre coach." I thought you didn't look at just one season? Where is the big picture with a guy who has only been HC for 137 games, ever?? I think your distain for Crean blinds you some. Don't let Archie Miller be your rebound coach...

You deleted half my post but still made my point. Why would any of those NBA guys come to the NCAA if they can wipe the floor with them as you say? Stevens included.
-
So, let's assume that Stevens and Donovan are not leaving their cushy environs and $3.7 annual salaries to come rescue IU. You would settle for Archie Miller who only has 2 years of HC experience and has a .591 record in the Atlantic 10. Why?
-
But the NBA is powder puff compared to college coaching. Don't get ne wrong, his neck is on the line because he is cheaper than the players, but $22 million spends well over 6 years. Without the recruiting and booster grind it is a no brainer.
-
So who is your pick to replace Crean? You've set a pretty high standard so this better be a good one...
-
I was there in ATL. IU played good enough to beat KY, but ended us losing to a #1 seed. Kinda like ND last night.
-
You want me to answer your questions, but you won't answer mine. I'm offended.
-
What has Donovan or Stevens said or done to make you think they want to come to IU? Anything, public or private? It is pure speculation. Why would they want to quit their current jobs and walk in here to work under the scrutiny of this fan base? The money in Boston and FL is just as green and the life is much less stressful. You can Crean now and you are going to get a Gregg Marshall or Archie Miller or Larry Krystkowiak. No thanks.
-
Ouch, kinda prickly. Crean has proven he can build a #1 ranked team, has proven that he can win the Big Ten title outright, has proven that he can make a deep tourney run. Crean has proven that he can recruit McDonalds All Americans each and every year, has proven that he can do all that with a clean program and a 1000 perfect APR. Who else is available that can check all those boxes?
-
Sir, Stevens and Donovan are NOT walking through that door. Whoever convinced you as such did you a disservice...
-
Brendan Dawson and Patrick Connaughton are both "wings" too. They both do a great job in the frontcourt. Clearly neither OG or Morgan are back to the basket 5s. Hence the continued recruitment of Mater and Bryant.
-
Why not? I'm not here to convince you. Noone here, including you, can predict the future. I guess Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall don't make me tingle like that...
-
Good point. KY was one shot from missing the Final 4, with 4 projected first rounders. In college bball the best team doesn't always win, see UCONN last year.
-
I like Crean's chances better than anyone else that is lined up to replace him. That's all. None of the names that have been speculated about are any more proven or accomplished than Crean.
-
I agee 100%. ND played hard and didn't back down. I think Grant tried to do too much on his own down the stretch, but they were right there. Hard to believe ND lost to 10 or 11 seeds the last 4 tourneys, with 3 first round losses. I bet they are glad they didn't can him.
-
I must have misplaced my fan card. I wasn't in NOLA for the Smart shot, but I watched it on my black and white TV! Is that enough credentials to post here? All I'm saying is I want Crean to stay. It's just my opinion.
-
You can call them wings, I call them forwards. How about we agree with the NBA and call them all frontcourt players?
-
So, let's be clear. We, as IU fans, do not want to be compared with Notre Dame and Gonzaga, two teams in this year's elite 8 who each won their conference tourney?? Tow teams that are AP top 10 and won 35 and 32 games, respectively?? Are you sure? Your statement holds water in 1985, not in 2015...
-
So if I support Crean than I clearly do not know enough about basketball and haven't followed closely enough. As I said earlier I'm not into the mob mentality. Man of you guys would have had Brey's head on a stake 2-3 years ago. When you have a witch hunt everyone gets burned.
-
Only one coach wins the title each year. To pretend that a coach can control all the variable and forsee every issue beforehand is setting up Crean, or whoever would replace him, to fail. You think Mike Brey failed last night since his team lost? It's just not that easy. I believe most college bball fans would consider Mark Few at Gonzaga as a success. Did you know it had been 16 years since he was in a sweet 16? I think some IU fans expect final fours like it is their birthright.
