Starving Student Athletes
IUNorthwesternGrad replied to IUNorthwesternGrad's topic in Off Topic Forum
I was a student athlete and paid for my education at IU and NW graduate school. GI bill helped some but that cost me 3 years in the service. That was not playing a sport BTW. I did receive some scholarship money but I wasn't in an "elite" sport and I never starved. Now, here is what U of C where Napier attends had to say. The alternate viewpoint comes from John Calipari here. Many years ago I saw an ESPN feature highlighting the U of K basketball team. These players are treated as if they are Kings. I don't like John Calipari, I think his programs are all suspect at the least. However, if he's spot on with his analysis at Kentucky then maybe athletes should receive some food, drink and snack bonus. Three meals a day is not enough for athletes in sports like basketball, swimming, football, wrestling - fill in the blank - any sport that requires expenditure of large amounts of calories. Indiana basketball, at least in the past, had a private dining facility beyond that I don't know about meals and extras. -
I just picked up on this one. Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed "starving" because he cannot afford food. Full article here. Let the discussion begin.........

Here we go - suspect programs UK and UConn go to final four. Clean this garbage up NCAA! And why is UConn awarded by playing at MSG?? Do the committee's have so much trouble finding neutral sites?

How many of the UK (KY Jelly) 8 championships should have been vacated? Bob Knight should be put in charge of the NCAA and let the house cleaning begin.

Best Pure Shooters All-Time @ IU

Or how about best "pure" shot. March 30, 1987 - Four seconds remain as Smart's shot flies through the air. Every eye in the stadium, all the millions of eyes watching the game on TV, follow the ball as it descends toward the net. The ball swishes through, perfectly and beautifully. Indiana 74, Syracuse 73. KA-CHING!!!!!!!! "The Shot" -

Thank for the replies so far but they are really off topic. It was about academic fraud, etc, etc. and college sports.

I looked around in an effort not to repost a topic/article on academic fraud. Bloomberg Business had a huge article on late Feb. concerning U of N. Carolina and academic fraud. What I didn't reallze is how wide spread this must be. In conjunction with rent-a-players also known as "one and dones" I'm beginning to realize why so many programs stink or are inconsistent and others are consistently churning out winning seasons and not hanging on to players. And the good teams loaded with upperclassmen may be similar to UNC without a whistleblower. Here's the article >> In Fake Classes Scandal, UNC Fails Its Athletes—and Whistle-Blower If you take the time to read the article I'd like to see some constructive discussion concerning this and how it relates to recruiting, player payments, or even player unionization. I've also see some talk concerning players as interns. What's so troubling is these players can't read or write and are expected to "go to class" and "study" and maybe even graduate. The NCAA is a mess, particularly in football and basketball. I'm a big IU BB fan dating back to when many here weren't born. I'd like to watch real student athletes but money has really grown to a point where the crime will continue uninterrupted. IMHO.
