Bracketology and Team Resumes
Baltimore Hoosier replied to Uspshoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I literally copied and pasted the quote from the Selection Committee website where it says they have conference monitoring calls. The members also receive conference monitoring sheets. Ohio State also won 5 road games in conference last season. Of course they look at total body of work, but you said conference wins mean zero and that just simply isn’t true. Spin it any way you want. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Also, reiterating for everyone that conference record does matter according to the NCAA Selection Committee.. to what extent, is anyone’s guess. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

These hot-takes don’t take into account what other bubble teams do in that same stretch. I’m seeing “likely” and “probably” being used because these guys are assuming IU takes care of business at home, which has been dicey as of late. And keep in mind, this season, there are more bubble type teams than I can remember in a long time. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

“An extensive season-long evaluation of teams through watching games, conference monitoring calls and regional advisory committee rankings,” are all taken into account, so saying that the conference record doesn’t matter isn’t really accurate. They are clearly monitoring how teams are doing in-conference. Road record is terrible and the non conference schedule was bad. IU benefited from more quad 1 win opportunities than most teams just based on the conference, but they converted only 6 of them total. Unfortunately, whether or not Andy Bottoms has IU on his bubble list doesn’t matter until all the conference games are played and the dust settles. I’m not confident at all about this team making an appearance at this point. Other bubble teams seem to be heating up and IU is barely treading water. I’d argue that the story of the year in college basketball is the horrific officiating. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

So 1 win and IU ends up sub .500 and 2-8 on the road in the B1G (2 true road wins on the year) and you’re telling me they are in without a doubt? I don’t see it. Not to Mention IU is historically bad in the B1G Tourney. There are too many of the Texas, Clemson, Texas Tech, Etc’s. out there for me to be that confident. Yesterday was not a good day for the Hoosiers. Big Quad 1 wins by bubble teams like Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas, and Providence (who all have better conference and road records than IU) make today’s game a huge one. I realize there are other metrics that will be looked at, but the basic eye test says that there isn’t much separating some of these borderline teams and Indiana. I don’t think IU a lock at all. Especially if they end up with a losing record in the B1G and 2-8 road record. Today is must-win in my opinion. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

An under .500 conference record and 2 road wins does not get this team in the tournament. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Justin Smith is horrific at basketball. Indiana cannot win a game outside of Assembly Hall. This game is over. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

So Justin Smith, the guy leading IU in minutes, doesn’t need to do anything on offense? He pretty much disappeared until the last 5 minutes of the game against Penn State. 2 rebounds in the first half. Lamar Stevens had like 30. I’m not categorizing his offense (or lack thereof) as his success. I’m simply pointing out that he makes boneheaded plays with the ball and misses a lot of easy shots. I want the guy leading my team in minutes to be reliable on both ends of the floor. I just personally would like to read more about Race. That’s all that comment meant. I don't get this story... For 35 minutes, Smith did next to nothing. He had a few bad turnovers and some point blank misses. Huge coming down the stretch, but in my opinion it was another head-scratching, inconsistent game for a guy who I had high expectations for coming into the season. Race was the bigger story. -

Interesting.. This summer will be pivotal for this kid. If he wants to get power conference looks, he's going to have to play in the top division against the best talent and stand out. -

I like the idea of being a 10 as long as they get one of those two teams you mentioned in the round of 32. -

Any update on this front? Thanks! -
The original question is a loaded one, because in order to make a run, you're assuming this team plays consistently for some period of time.. However, this is one of, if not the most inconsistent teams I've ever watched. Devonte is the X-Factor, but again, has he EVER put things together in back to back games? Let alone 6 in a row.

IUBB vs Penn State - 2/23/20 @ Noon
Baltimore Hoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Anyone else want to break things when they watch Justin Smith play basketball? For every big play he makes, there's a bone-headed turnover or ill-advised shot attempt. He played 31 minutes yesterday and I only remember seeing him for the last 5:00 of the game, unless he was dribbling the ball off of his foot or missing an easy put-back. -

Big night for Race and obviously TJD. If IU makes a concentrated effort to play inside out, they are MUCH more effective. I'm not sure why this isn't the strategy every game. Size and length are major strengths for this team.
