IU vs Louisville Game Thread
Townie replied to Beachfront Property's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
keys to winning: LIMIT THE TURNOVERS!!!! Pray CTC calls smart timeouts and makes good substitutions -
As much as we'd (IU fans) would love this... AT THE MOMENT those schools really don't have much to gain from scheduling a series with us. They really don't have much to gain if they beat us, but a lot to lose if we upset them. It's the sad reality of our current position and reputation in the cbb world. It's going to require drastic improvements for our program stemming from Crean turning things around, a dynamite new coach, a new AD, or a miracle run in March for us to be relevant to earn a national TV game against the powerhouses atm. I think it goes without saying, this is just my honest opinion, and im not stating these thoughts as a fact, I very well could be overlooking some benefits for scheduling us... TL;DR we are too weak on paper, teams have nothing to gain for scheduling us.

The State of our program- How do you guys feel about it?

I like in Michigan now (for work) and I'm considering doing my MBA in Ann Arbor... I think this is a really solid comparison. Traditional blue blood powerhouse that's at a very low point, largely in part to an inferior/overrated coaching staff -

they are still laughing at us though... i mean its all part of the cbb rivalry... we kick each other when we're down :P -
I mean, a lot of that has to do with his inability to develop players and manage the roster (over-recruiting/creaning)
-
i guess what's left is Ark's "fastest 40 min of cbb" or w/e they call their style... just non-stop full court pressing and a run-and-gun offense. if a team gets hot going balls to the wall on offense... maybe they can stay ahead in running up the score

I think it would help UK a lot more than if would help us. Indiana HS talent > Kentucky HS talent by a long shot. I think this had a lot to do with why Cal really wanted to go to Neutrals.. /shrug Also, if I'm not mistaken I thought this UCLA home and home was to replace their UNC home and home series for the next few years, and then they re-add UNC and replace UCLA (hopefully Cal and Crean get the UK/IU series back on)

I read somewhere this is only for a few years to replace their UNC series

watching the Butler game it reminds me of the significance of the "mood" and whistles from the refs in the college game. Some teams like Butler, Duke, Louisville, etc... love playing this tenacious and scrappy defense where they are straight up mugging people. I feel like to a degree, a lot of big ten games have this form of scrappy play the refs allow. I wonder if this translates to better or worse success later on in March where the refs are more liberal with their whistles... thoughts anyone?
-
YES!! this right here. I hated all the bandwagon fans after they made their FF runs. I started rooting for Butler when I first started getting into watching cbb and they were only an above average team with the likes of aj graves and co... those were fun teams to watch and root for them because they were usually underdogs when they were on national TV. The eventual influx of random fans around the state, especially those in Bloomington with no Butler ties made me sick xD
-
yeah, that's a really great point. That seems especially true at the start of a season because younger teams haven't had a chance to gel. I guess that's why those pre-season tournaments and international trips can be so beneficial to a younger team.
-
yeah.. I was hoping to remain "under the radar" if that's even possible for a team like IU lol.

Is it just me or are we noticing more parity in the collegiate game? There are numerious no-name schools and mid-majors giving these high profile schools scares, night in and night out. Do you guys think the familiar D1 schools are overrated or has the playing field evened some? Even the powerhouses like Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, Florida, Arizona, etc have all struggled with mid-majors at some point this season, would you attribute that to early season growing pains or an improved level of competition?

Thoughts on the Games in Indy Last Night
Townie replied to CampHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
ahh yeah, i gotchu. Sorry I wasn't trying to bust your balls over semantics. I think it's an accomplishment to even become a role player in the NBA, because those guys truly are at the top of their profession/sport. That being said, you're right in that not all of them turn into "superstars", although Cal pitches them that way before each draft. As far as Cousins, his case is a tricky one, you could definitely argue he's putting up crazy good numbers and deserves to be an all-star, but being top 15 is a stretch because he is on such a crap team, everything is built around him now. -

oops didn't see this post. I would argue they are more than quality players, those are centerpieces of their teams. I think eric bledsoe, terrence jones, patrick patterson, nerlens noel, MKG, and enes kanter are all "quality players" who are solid contributors. he does have burnouts like daniel orton, liggins, lamb, etc reference: http://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/conferences/Southeastern-Conference/8/Kentucky/258/NBA_Players -

Candystriped, on 19 Nov 2014 - 6:02 PM, said: Yeah I think it's actually detrimental,to a player's NBA success early on, for a top 5 pick because the scrubby lottery pick teams pick them up. Also, Brandon Knight is having a pretty successful season, despite all his fails LOL. I don't think it's fair to expect everyone that actually makes the NBA to become a huge super star/allstar either. The fact that cal has churned out several is quite impressive (don't forget Rose/Evans). -
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2014/10/22/wainstein-probe-implicates-over-3000-students-in-university-of-north-carolina-academic-scandal/ This is textbook "loss of institutional control" which warrants the death penalty. However, because it's UNC it'll probably just result in a slap on the wrist or just the football program taking the fall. What are everyone else's thoughts?

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/22/report-texas-to-start-paying-their-athletes-a-10000-stipend/ Oh snap. $10000 stipend for athletes at Texas.

a huge reason May went to UNC was because Mike Davis totally botched his recruitment. IIRC David missed out on a dinner with the May family. Another rando tidbit, AJ Moye told me he wasn't the biggest fan of playing for Davis as well :P

yeah, this is pretty common. bracey wright had a brand new sports car his first week on campus too.
