So Crean thinks he's made some big public statement about accountability and keeping negative influences away from his team by getting rid of HMP...and these guys are basically giving Crean the finger by partying with the guy. It's one thing if guys are out drinking when Coach doesn't want them to...but being out drinking with probably the ONE GUY that Crean clearly wants them all to stay away from is just a whole new level of apathy toward what your coach has to say.

Since Hanner was apparently WITH Holt and Bryant while they were cited, we're talking about two separate possible incidents (Hanner at Yogi's apartment and Hanner with Holt/Bryant/unnamed freshman).

The LAST thing we need around this team is more weed!!!! [emoji37]

Thomas Bryant and Emmitt Holt cited for illegal alcohol posession
2Much replied to swatford's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Hard to explain. I feel like players at many of the top schools are able to switch gears pretty quickly from being told they're "God's Gift to Basketball" in the recruiting process (natural) to figuring out that the same coach who couldn't kiss their butts enough while they were in high school will now have no problem kicking their butts in college. Our players seem to struggle with that concept and just keep thinking they're doing all of IU-fandom "a favor" by playing basketball for this team. -

They weren't arrested for drinking it, they were cited for being in possession of it. Still illegal. No blood test required. However, as was mentioned earlier in this thread, exactly what do you think they were going to do with the alcohol they were already illegally possessing? Do you think the excise police should have just tailed them for a few hours and waited to see if they decided to drink the alcohol before citing them? -

You know what else won't shut those people up? Fighting these charges in court. You seem to be the only one around here advocating this approach. If you think this is what the fanbase wants, then I think you're sorely misreading the fanbase. -

The legal consequences are basically nothing. It's not worth the time and money to fight it. It's the public perception that's the problem, and there's no going back from that right now. Plea and get it over with legally. -

If they were in a parking lot, no one was "driving." If the others in the car weren't minors, they wouldn't be cited for minor possession. -

Amend that slightly to include the fact that since we're in the off-season, it would likely be a 2 game suspension from the preseason exhibition games. -

This is me admittedly stretching things and moving into speculation, but there were two people cited and three others in the car. One could assume those other three weren't cited because they weren't minors. Anyone completely convinced that there were only two IU basketball players in that car? -

And what exactly do you think they were going to do with the unopened bottles of vodka??? Sell them to raise money for the needy??? Let's not give them too much credit. Getting arrested before you have the chance to do anything stupid with the alcohol you're already illegally in possession of doesn't mean you've seen the error of your ways. -

A life-threatening or career-ending injury that was, let's say, "more probable or not" a result of two people on this team messing around and illegally using substances they weren't supposed to be using. DD is already pretty much a guy who should be talking at high school convocations about the dangers of underage drinking...and HMP was just lucky he got pulled over before getting in a situation where he'd end up as a presenter at "Scared Straight - The IU Basketball Edition." Are these guys trying to bring back "After School Specials" or what?!? I guess we have Exhibits A and B for "This is your brain on drugs..." because the decision-making here is pretty questionable. These are repeat offenders - not just based on rumors or secret-IU-drug-tests, but by actual incidents where the POLICE had to get involved. -
Can't believe no one has brought up Royce Waltman's ISU assistant coach... Dick Bender. Tell me that's not a name that brings fear into the heart of even the strongest man.

It all makes sense now... "Hey, it would be great if you could step it up with your coaching on defense for next season!" "What? I wasn't coaching defense! I thought YOU were in charge of defense!" "Uh, anyone have the notes from that preseason coaches' meeting when I thought we decided all of that? I swear we said YOU were in charge of defense..."
-
Yes, and if this team was going to be the same team he's coaching next year, maybe I could get on board. This isn't a 12U AAU team where you can potentially coach the same core of players for a few years as they grow and mature -- this an NCAA team and you'll have players coming-and-going every year for better or worse. It's great to hear that Crean likes where this team is headed. It's just too bad that since they lost this afternoon, he'll never get to coach "this team" again. Where "this team" is headed is irrelevant. You can have a normal attrition of players in a high-major program without feeling like you start every single November in a "rebuilding" phase and I feel like that's the story of IUBB over the past couple of years.

The possible "news" being referenced is obviously a very fluid and changing situation, so anyone who would give you a firm answer as to what's going to happen after the powers-that-be discuss everything would clearly be wrong. Those who are actually "in the know" are pretty clearly identified over time on sites like this. Again, if you want double-verified-sources, stay off anonymous internet message boards and stick to established news sites.

IU Basketball Team Dealing With Epidemic of Poor Choices by Players Who Should Know Better
2Much replied to DocLibby's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It's true that the specifics of consequences don't have to be made public. However, without those specifics, what the public IS seeing is that whatever punishment Yogi got from the program wasn't significant enough to prevent other players from engaging in similar behavior. That's why you're going to see the public calling into question whether or not Yogi's punishment was sufficient. It absolutely may have worked to keep Yogi from personally repeating his mistakes, but part of the purpose of punishing an individual who is a part of a group is to deter others in the group from engaging in the same behaviors. The fact that it didn't in this case isn't Yogi's fault, but that's why you're going to see his punishment from the team being questioned by the public. -
Oh sure! Where were you two years ago when I was getting ridden out of here on a splintery rail, man?!? :help:
-
Yes -- you have to work around Open Door laws.
-
I think you're looking at a lost season either way, unfortunately. You've either got an interim coach or what amounts to a lame duck coach who has already been told that he's losing his job at the end of the season unless he wins way more games than most people think is possible.
-
That's pretty much 100% of the news that you're going to get on an internet message board. If it's verified and being stated by enough people with credibility, you'd be seeing it on official media outlets. You choose whether or not to believe the source here, but don't expect anonymous internet message board posters to give you all of their credentials and connections.

He specifically said someone with CREDIBILITY...

Yogi Ferrell Discusses Indiana's recent events
2Much replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Add it to the collection... "I apologize for letting down my family, coaches, teammates and fans and truly regret the mistake I made. This is something I have to learn from, use better judgment and I have a responsibility as a leader on this team to make sure nothing like this happens again." (Yogi Ferrell 4/25/14) "I'm very sorry for my actions. I know I have embarrassed my family and this program and have let a lot of people down. I have no excuses for the mistakes I made and I take full responsibility for them." (Stanford Robinson 4/25/14) "Devin is not only a teammate but a great friend and it pains me to know that I have caused him harm. I sincerely regret my actions and I understand that I must be held accountable to the high standards that Coach Crean and IU have set for all of us. “I want to apologize to Coach, to my teammates and to the entire IU community for not living up to the expectations that this program and university deserve. I will work hard in the coming days, weeks and months to become a better man and teammate.” (Emmitt Holt 11/3/14) Couldn't find one from Perea's arrest. But hey -- it's all going to be different this time, right? -
Some good points in this article, I think. http://q.usatoday.com/2014/11/04/tom-crean-indiana-basketball-suspensions-devin-davis/ "Crean did this to himself, though. He set an impossibly high bar when he arrived by declaring himself the man who would exterminate a rotten culture cultivated by Sampson and replace it with one above reproach." "His real mistake — and it is now six or seven years old — was selling a narrative that painted Sampson’s kids as unworthy of playing at a vaunted program like Indiana. It wasn’t that simple. They weren’t villains, just as Crean’s players aren’t always going to be heroes. This is real life." "Still, Crean got rid of most of Sampson’s players and started from nothing. Through the first three years — the worst in Indiana basketball history — he repeatedly reminded fans that he was not merely coaching basketball but changing a culture."
