As I was chastised, that's not the point of this thread. It's a look at who's out there so if something did happen we could be comfortable with a replacement. -
Potential coaching change suggestions
Bryan Medema replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I guess to somewhat redact my own thread and redirect it: What IU Alums (or coaches with IU ties) are out there? Again, whenever the next coach takes the reigns I think it might be someone from the program. I'm interested in discussing who's out there, what they've done, and what they are postured to do. Unfortunately, the Army has kept me too busy to keep an eye on all of this, but might as well celebrate the new year. -
Big Ten/Big East Press Conference
Bryan Medema replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This would have been fantastic...5 years ago. This is an IU playing in the CBI situation: If we win (as a conference) no one will care. If we lose, God help us. -
So did he just get posterized?

I actually think Illinois is a sleeper for the top 2-3 spots in the conference. Lots of talent came in and has been there (on transfer). Still, I feel the trend towards guard play carrying teams has to favor us.

The NCAA has just announced that the B1G will receive 14 automatic bids.

Are we going to need to track "own goals"?
-
Anyone think Rutgers might be the first B1G team to "shoot the moon" and post a season long goose-egg?

Before I get going, I think this is a great thread so long as we can keep the clouds of pointless pessimism away. I agree that the B1G will definitely dip a bit next year in terms of comprable quality at the top. Other leagues (the ACC in particular) will be stronger than us at the top, but the B1G will definitely be a deep, unpredictable, wild league. Wisconsin is the clear cut favorite and I sincerly doubt that anyone can challenge them. Between the returning talent, the coaching talent, and the team experience (not to mention their reputation as a consistent performer), no one can match Wisconsin. After Wisconsin, it gets messy. Between Michigan, MSU, OSU, Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland and Minnesota, we are all in for a ride. On any given night, any of these teams can beat anyone (with the exception of Wisconsin, not to say they'll run the table though). I'd love to delve further into each team, but I haven't done my homework on where everyone stands next year (in depth at least). To answer the question posed at the top: IU will finish in the top half of the league behind the strength of its guard play. As I noted above, I believe the gulf between 2 and 10 could be 2-4 games, so predictions are out the window. Either way, buckle up for the B1G, it's going to be a wild ride.

Noah was trying to get into Dunkirk a few weeks back with the line "I'm going to the NBA." The bouncer replied "You're 7ft tall and everyone knows you're 18, I'm glad you'll have a job soon; I'd like to keep mine."

Jeff Rabjohns reports that IU will take a trip to Montreal in early August. Looks like we won't have to wait too long to see this team in action!

IU foreign trip to Montreal
Bryan Medema replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I was initially concerned when it came out that we were looking at doing an overseas/foreign trip, however this seems to be the best possible solution. Teams that travel excessively are not typically successful teams (especially when done early in the season, no source to cite offhand, however I know it exists somewhere) due to the added stress from travel and its influence on the ability of teams to train, practice, and adjust early on. By doing this in August, it provides us an opportunity to face real competition early on and, ideally, understand what kind of team we are under real conditions. It will ideallly force our team to work even harder over the summer and develop in their role sooner than they would otherwise. Further, it should raise our recruiting profile in a growing recruiting region (or you know, entire country), all without the expense of practice time and long trips early in the season. Glass and Crean deserve an early A+ for this one. -

Offensive Strategy For Our Guard-Heavy Lineup
Bryan Medema replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Great topic! Next year our team is definitely going to live and die by the sword ability to score. I've been on record on here multiple times as saying that Yogi will take another step forward as our offensive style will start to cater to his strength with the drive-and-kick. While I don't see us running a clone of the Loyola offense, I think it's feasible to see IU be one of the fastest paced teams in the country. If I had to levy a guess, I'd assume our offense would look something like this: 1) Receive ball via rebound/steal/turnover/etc. 2) Kick to ball handler (in our case anyone playing the 1-3) or retain (if a ball handler) (In order of precedence) 3A) Kick to player cutting to basket 3B) Drive to basket 3C) Kick to player at 3pt line 3D) Spot up at 3pt line 3E) Set-up half-court offense 4) Run 4 high, 1 low set, constant motion with high screens. First man to get an open look either takes the shot or drives. Whoever set the screen along with the low man crash the boards while the 2 players rotate and look for a catch and shoot at the 3pt line. 5) Set up transition defense with the 5 and players at the 3pt line transitioning back with the player off the drive and the screener putting initial pressure on the opposing team. Once the opposing team breaks through the initial pressure, play the proposed 1-3-1 with Troy/Stan rotating at the top-spot to limit penetration and entry passes using their length. Obviously that's an overly simplistic approach, but it should maximize our strengths and run opposing teams into the ground. The major assumptions are: -April/Hanner/Devin can maintain a fast paced athletic offensive approach -Yogi/Rojo/Max/JB2 can handle, drive, and shoot the 3 -Stan and Troy continue to develop (or in the case of Stan, initially develop!) the ability to force teams to respect them at the 3pt line -
Title says it all. Discussz
