(2014) SF Josh Cunningham to Bradley
TheStillman replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
If there is anything that is wrong with college basketball it is not a fan being realistic about where the program is. Is BaltimoreHoosier in Cook Hall telling the players to settle? -
Also notice an opponent of ours, SMU, who many laughed at Crean for calling marquee is number 11. They are followed by another IU opponent Louisville at 12. If IU gets a top 25 team in the Challenge we will be scheduled to play 28% of the teams on this list.

What Does it Mean to Play for Indiana?
We had a full gym of Hickory High that all booed in unison during one game at home regarding Creans sub patterns. That's what you get at IU. A gym full of knowledgeable fans and alumni that you just can't bs if you cant coach. Its all out there and no amount of sweet 16 rings will change it.
Yeah, we won that game against an elite 8 team/B1G champ. Awful job by coach in that one. Didn't we learn that the barber shop guys for hickory high thought they were knowledgeable and knew the team but actually knew nothing? Remember when they tried to run Coach Dale out of town? Not the group I'd want to be compared to. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners -

Also just because you don't view the sky as falling and 2012-13 as a failure doesn't make you a Crean supporter or loyalist. Makes you more of a realist and not such a group of guys in the Barber Shop talking about hickory high. Which is what you all are at this point with some of the assertions you make about the program Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
Call me old school but I feel only a national championship deserves a ring. They got a special banner to point out how special that group was. It just shows that IU ha lowered the bar and it is used against Crean on the recruiting trail. The Crean supporters don't realize how damaging that s16 loss coupled with this terrible season had on recruiting. But it's cool we got 2012 achievement rings. We good.
You know all the teams at IU under Knight won a B1G title got rings not just national titles? How old school are you? Did you know 2011-12 was most wins by an IU team since 1993? Did I say we're good? Never said we're good at this point but let's lay off 2011-13 teams. They did nothin but good things for IU Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
The top coaches occasionally get upset in the first few rounds, but they are staples in the deep rounds. All I'm saying is the Sweet 16 really isn't that much of an accomplishment (I don't consider it one period, I don't celebrate it), no one considered it one until the last few years. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we want to get back to the level we should expect we have to hold ourselves to that level. That is where the bar was set, it's up to the team to meet the bar not the other way around.
You can have high expectations and appreciate accomplishments even if you don't reach lofty goals. I can't imagine how any fan could have watched that VCU game and not celebrated the win. What's even the point at that point if you're not celebrating an exhilarating win Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
Those rigs were about a sweet 16 as they were sweet 16 rings. They weren't career achievement or being IU back rings. Ultimately they achieved sweet 16s. 2012 awesome. 2013 was a disappointment and or struggles point to Crean not the players. The fans love the players and dislike the coach.
Look at the rings. Stated accomplishments of that season as prominently as sweet 16 Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
The tournament can be a crap shoot, but here's another bit of reality for you. Despite that the top coaches are still staples in the deep rounds. That's what we should expect, that's what Crean is paid for.
The top coaches also get upset a lot in the first few rounds. It goes both ways. I'm not saying Crean is great I'm just pushing back against people saying that our teams in 2011-12 and 2012-13 were failures because the 2 year run did not end in a title. Those players worked too hard and achieved too much to get this ridicule from fans base. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
So every time I celebrate something I should get a ring now? Getting Sweet Sixteen rings is a joke.
Who cares what they got. Those rings were more about going from 12 to 27 wins beating 3 top 5 teams than sweet 16. Those players worked their asses off to bring IU back to that level. They deserved it. Sweet 16 is an accomplishment, but the fans (and the players) want more.
We may want more but it is the tourney. Let's live in reality that a lot of 1 seeds do not go past the sweet 16. That upset by a very good Syracuse team was not a major upset. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
The point is making the Sweet Sixteen isn't something that should be celebrated the way it was. Giving out Sweet Sixteen rings was an absolute joke
Were you excited when IU beat VCU? Did you celebrate that night and that entire week or just silently turn off your tv and not get excited or celebrate? It's not like the players packed it in and didn't improve after that. They did came back and built a B1G champion. You're talking ambiguities with "we celebrated it too much" Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Back to back sweet 16s for first time in 19 years. That is an accomplishment. I don't care what your expectations were those players did accomplish something. They represented the university and exemplified what Indiana basketball players should be. And guess what? They were all brought in and developed by Tom Crean. You all can laugh about Crean's tweet but he does know and understand what an Indiana basketball player should be based on how he built that squad. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
In 2011, it was an accomplishment. I remember going into the 2010 and 2011 seasons my dad and I just hoped IU would finish over .500 and go to the NIT. In 2011, they overachieved and went to the S16 and lost to the eventual champions. 2012-13 S16 was a total disappointment to me and many other Hoosier fans. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Again disappointment does not mean 2012-13 team didn't accomplish anything. I'm sure that whole team would take offense to that given what they tangibly achieved throughout regular season Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

It's just too bad that we're going to continue to lose ground to football schools such as OSU, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin and Nebraska. It's just really a pathetic situation.
IU and Crean are not losing ground to MSU, Wisconsin and OSU, the program has been behind them for over 2 decades now Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
It used to mean making the NCAA tournament was an absolute minimum expectation, now it's a pat on the back and "way to go, great job". It used to mean the Sweet 16 wasn't that impressive, now you get rings for it (and a ludicrous extension). It used to mean results, now it's excuses for the lack of results. If I were to email I'd say something like: It means playing for the name on the front. It means knowing individual recognition will come with team success. It means knowing why we wear the candy stripes. It means not giving up until the final buzzer sounds. It means opponent seeing 'Indiana' and knowing it will be a war.
What you described has not been Indiana for 20 years, well before Crean. Indiana went to one sweet 16 from 1994 to 2011. ONE! Hollowell & Etherington transferring..
TheStillman replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Agree with your take I was being sarcastic since if winning and going to the tournament were his goals staying at IU was his better option. With the benefit of hindsight he did both of those at GWU but no way anyone would've taken that bet last April when he transferred that GWU would have a better season than IU. I think the playing time and close to home aspect was the reason not so he could win and go to tournament. -

So he left a team who'd been to the sweet 16 for two straight years that was about to be preseason top 25 for a team that went 13-17 the year prior and hadn't made the tourney since 2006-07? Makes total sense now -
As true as that might be about Lyle and Lyles, Crean did go after them hard. At one point he wanted both of them badly. Crean lost them. It might very well may be that Crean doesn't really care about not wanting that type of person at IU, but it is a convenient excuse when he loses out on some recruits or can't get on the same page with a current player and decides to cut them loose.
When Lyle reopened his commitment it was well known that Crean did not offer him a scholarship. It's also ridiculous to say Crean had little to do with JBJ recommitting as someone is saying above. C'mon now you cannot honestly think that. If he says he's going where his heart is at IU that has everything to do with Crean. Right now IU is Crean and Crean is IU when it comes to recruits in statements like this. Critique Crean all you want but don't make up things just I fit your narrative. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
Is Coach Crean feeling the heat?
heading into year seven our program is behind Michigan St, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio St when it comes to comparing with other B1G schools he damn sure better be feeling the heat
Last year was the first year you could argue our program was in front of any of those programs for the past 15 years (and maybe longer) so I'm not sure this is all on Crean.
