If you're going to let a trial by fire happen and not worry about fouls, why not against teams like this? We certainly aren't taking that chance against Pitt, Ville, or Butler

  That's my point. He has to learn how to play effective defense before we start playing actual teams. He's afraid to foul. We can't afford to look back and say "well it worked then" when the heart of our schedule is coming. If we continue to accept what he is offering on defense, we are going to get smoked. You have to let him play defense. We don't have a choice. Any other team than Lamar and we lose that game.

Even so, after watching him, do you see Diamont actually succeeding Sudfeld? Even with the situation he was thrown in, he looked absolutely terrible. If it wasn't for Coleman, we may never have gotten points. In any game

  Not when Lamar hits their 3rd runner in a row to bring the game within seven. At some point, you have to just tell him to play defense. Being too conservative has hurt us way more than has helped. He can't learn to effectively play defense if he's too scared to. Also, they just plain need to play Holt. We don't have any other options

I would love if Holt and Hoetzel got some of Troy's minutes. They need experience and Troy needs to know that his lack of hustle against Lamar isn't going unnoticed 

  I would argue the coaching staff is the problem here. There's no way a kid goes from being a fouling machine around the rim to letting people by in one season without influence. There's a difference between being smart and just letting players score inside. Someone at IU has made the decision the either Hanner can't play D without fouling and he should just let kids by or that he can't foul because Holt isn't good enough. I mean, he shows zero ability to even scare off 6'5" guards from driving. 

Well, even if we beat Pitt we won't climb in because they lost to Hawaii

I'm just going to skip this post game thread...

It's way too ingrained in Hanner's head that if he plays defense, he will foul. He let guys slide through all night. If he gets some reassurance there's a guy who can come in for him, then maybe he won't play so conservative on defense. I blame the coaching. I mean, there's a reason a kid flat out gives up layups play after play after play
