Stan and Troy suspended for failed drug tests..
PointBlank replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This punishment (?) is similar to being sentenced to partake in a sorority pillow fight. Half of the suspension is for exhibitions game. Repeat offenders which they are (two failed tests) deserve more than two regular season games. They added the fourth game because they knew people would call them out on half of the suspensions taking place during the preseason. How about this, allow them to play in the two exhibition games and suspend them for the first four to eight regular season games? This is a win at all cost suspension. No way Coach Crean and the administration would allow for these two key players to miss the SMU game. I believe the mess IU finds itself in at this time is a direct result of the less than severe punishments handed down after the previous incidents (Hanner, Yogi and Stan), and the individuals lack of respect for the IU program including their coaches. Running the steps is one thing, but game and playing time is what these players cherish and look forward to most. Stan would be on the thinnest of ice. He already demonstrated his lack of mental awareness as did Yogi by using a fake ID during the days leading up to the Little 500 weekend. The local authorities might look the other way at times, but the state guys will not - every student knows this. If I were the coach (and no one would want that), I would look at Yogi and Stan and ask, how am I supposed to punish dumb? -
I am optimistic about Holt eventually being a solid contributor and I agree with you stating he has to prove it on the court. Ever since TC used Jobe & NBA in the same sentence before anyone had the opportunity to see Jobe play, I like to wait until I see the player prove it on the court. Fellow players and coaches at times act as if they are another player's PR person and over-hype an individual.

Many of the colleges which already sell beer utilize beer only kiosks. The lines move quickly even during halftime. In regards to drunken fans and not being able to control themselves, it is much worse at professional games than at the college level. Someone mentioned the cost factor and for Mr. Joe College student who drinks Natural Lite or the other cheap swill, the cost of beers sold at college stadiums are expensive and many times out of his/her financial range. Not sure how much a case of Natural Lite cost, but I imagine you can come close to buying a case or at the very least a 12 pack for the cost of two beers sold at most college games. The students are already sneaking beer and alcohol into college stadiums including Memorial and Assembly. Schools need as many legal financial revenue streams as possible, especially when the big split comes and if paying college athletes a stipend is employed. IU and other like universities will be at the bottom of the financial pyramid and have to come up with additional and much needed revenue. A negative aspect is dropping your over priced beer.

How was Dwayne Wade's home and personal life in high school?

Could this have been a case of when the coaches are away the mice will play? The coaches were on the road and might have received information some players were slacking and not putting their best foot forward. It has been mentioned before, this team lacks a true leader which can get the team pulling in the same direction and at times walking the straight line. Not a big fan of TC going all tweeter gaga, but maybe it was the only avenue in order to get the message across? I imagine the players follow his tweets. Personally, I would have just picked up the telephone and called some people and kept it between me and the team.

6'4" Guard Nick Zeisloft joins Hoosiers
PointBlank replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Due to the makeup of the roster, and the limited overall experience at the PF and C positions, I feel IU will play with a lot of 3 and 4 guards on the floor. Zeisloft has a lot of experience with this type of play, even if it might not have been with great success but he has a lot of experience under his belt with 4 guards on the floor. No one will confuse the ISU offense with some of the past four guard play at Villanova. Maybe the the less than stellar ISU offensive stats comes from limited overall team talent. Zeisloft will be surrounded by much better players at IU than what Nick was surrounded by at ISU. I think ISU had 5 guards average over 20 minutes of playing time last year as compared to IU's 2 guards averaging over 20 minutes. If IU is going to go with a lot of 3 and 4 guard play, Zeisloft's experience should pay dividends in practice alone. I hope he becomes a much larger game contributor but will be satisfied if he can lead by being a valued contributor in practice and demonstrating how to run an offense with four guards. I think almost everyone would have preferred a solid big man coming in as a transfer and who would have been immediately eligible. Unfortunately, TC and staff missed out on these types of transfers and were forced to go a different route. -
6'4" Guard Nick Zeisloft joins Hoosiers

I think Zeisloft will fill a huge void by providing maturity and much needed leadership. This team severely lacked good leadership, good decision makers, and maturity last year. He might be able to reel Yogi in when needed and will hopefully be able to assist the others in regards to being at the proper place on the floor and running the offense as designed. That is if he is on the floor. Others failed miserably last year in trying to run the team and this includes TC and his staff. Who knows, maybe there is something on the horizon in regards to another current player and this signing was a necessity? He isn't a transfer which is going to initially get you all revved up about being on your team, but you are getting a player who another team saw fit to name as a captain. Not too often do you see a team captain leaving another program. Personally not a big fan of the team captain leaving his team behind, but Zeisloft had the opportunity to gain admission into Kelley and this obviously was a huge factor. -
Bob Huggins was working for the next university (K-State) which was going to hire him after he was terminated at Cincy. He did not have to answer to any NCAA rules or dead periods. He was able to land Beasley because he had access when other coaches did not.

Bring Ty Neal back from Cincy.

There are a couple of coaches if they earn their bonuses top one million. UCLA and LSU come to mind.

Due to the previous infractions within the basketball program, I believe CTC has to impose a bigger penalty than just missing a couple of meaningless games. CTC deserves better than what the players are giving in return. CTC shares in the blame for the lack of discipline on this team but he can't be with these guys 24/7. To date and what has been made public, there has been 3 players with alleged positive drug tests, 3 players arrested for alcohol offenses 2 of which were charged with possessing fake IDs. This works out to a very unacceptable percentage of offenses for the limited number of players on the team, even if one has departed. Hanner's punishment was too light. Even though underage drinking isn't a capital offense, these charges are currently the cherry on top of a team which has some issues and a severe lacking in discipline. If I were CTC, I would inform Yogi to not even consider being a team captain next season. I would suspend the duo at least five games if not seven even if it hurt the team performance. The two of them can learn from the bench. This is an accumulative factor discipline situation and the two should have known better and expected stronger disciplinary actions due to the previous team issues. I am not a CTC apologists, but he deserves much better than what he is receiving from the players currently on the team. This current issue which was brought on by Yogi and Stan has taken away valued time from CTC's recruiting, and just might have made landing a player a little tougher if the prospective recruit's parents want their son in an environment which includes discipline and not a me first attitude. Team captains are not me first people, it is about the team and being able to think ahead.

CTC recruited these players to represent Indiana University. He has to date obviously failed with some of these individuals what it means to represent Indiana University and how fortunate they are to have their tuition, board, and other expenses covered by Indiana University while other students struggle to even pay tuition much less have extra money to visit bars. It is a privilege to represent Indiana University, a privilege very few will be fortunate enough to experience. Notice none of the three mention Indiana University, they just mentioned the program. CTC took this unfortunate situation to blame the less than desired season results on a lack of good decision and maturity. I hope CTC can turn it around but he should lead by example. Is it a demonstration of maturity and good decision making when he blows past opposing coaches after the game and refuses to shake hands, or chases a coach down on the court after a win to chastise him? He needs to gain control of these players. For those asking the question of others about whether or not if they drank underage while in college, that question really isn't relevant since most of the people were not on full scholarship. Joe average student is risking his scholarship for offenses committed and doesn't have an athletic department backing him.

What has changed or is just luck? We know of the shenanigans the players under Sampson participated in, how many of those players became involved with the Monroe County legal system?
-
It appears as if another poster was correct. Yogi was not forthcoming. Even at his young age, Yogi had to know the truth would eventually come out. Ask your buddies, if found guilty, getting caught with a fake ID and drinking underage is a very costly affair in Monroe County.

Devil's Advocate: Indiana's Schedule
PointBlank replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I realize Fred Glass does not perform the task of basketball scheduling, however; I am surprised he would have approved such a weak non-conference schedule because after all, we are Indiana. The non-conference schedule had much weaker teams than the CBI tournament.
