IU vs Pitt Official Post Game Thread
hoosierinIll replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Watch the body language of the players when they're pulled, they don't seem to be needing it. In fact, I can't recall a player tugging on a jersey or raising a hand for a break. You may be right. Maybe they aren't gassed BECAUSE they get subbed out so much. Either way, Crean and Coach Jackson have these guys in elite shape. -

I'd like to see us keep the rotation with these 8: 1. Yogi 2. JBJ 3. RoJo 4. Troy 5. Hanner 6. NZ 7. Holt 8. Hartman At this point make the others earn PT by beating out one of these in practice. There's no need to play 11 guys in a game. -

Hanner has three fouls and still no Emmit? Let's not foul Hanner out, for Pete's sake. -

I think we'll come out firing! I love watching this team shoot the ball! My concerns are: 1. Foul trouble (they have some serious size). 2. 2nd half defensive fatigue. 3. Giving up offensive rebounds. Let's go Hoosiers -

So Rutgers definitely won't be a gimme. Watching them against an ok Clemson squad and the Scarlett Knights aren't too bad. Their size and physicality will be a challenge and it will be fun to watch Yogi and their pg Mack go after it. -
You're probably right. That's why he makes over 3 mil a year, because the responsibility has to fall somewhere. Is it fair? Probably not. But IU basketball is not about mediocrity. In the past it has stood for trust, team work, hard work, excellent coaching and the opportunity to represent and win for a state that values basketball at all levels. That is a big responsibility. Crean has had 7 years behind the wheel... Expectations are not being met, so yes...it is his fault.

So Marlin left a full ride scholarship spot at D1 IPFW where he started as a freshman to transfer to IU for a walk-on spot because he wanted to be a Hoosier, right? Then he transferred to a D2 NAIA school on a partial scholarship at a school where education costs are right at 30,000 a year for playing time? Maybe he wanted to play for a team where they collectively played for the name on the front of the jersey instead of being worried about PT? I'm sure Marlin knew there would be more talented players in front of him at IU. IU used to be a place where playing for the name on the front and representing the state truimped all other motives. IMO, not the case with the current culture at IU.

I think the beginning of the end for me was signaled by walk-ons like Marlin, who have grown up dreaming of playing for IU, transferring. This, more than all the other stuff, communicates an internal culture problem to me.

4-10 now. I still think you don't hire anyone at this point except Stevens. Maybe Glass is playing the waiting game for this reason? This hire must to be the right one. He's a no brainer.

I think they announced the crowd just over 12,000. Yes, it was pretty empty...no way there was 12,000. -

Crean is the deflection king! No one can deflect a question like he can. Tonight was...well...interesting. It was my first time this year sitting close to the bench and I spent most of the time listening to the bench/staff,etc. For a young, defensively challenged team, I'm not sure what the benefit is for us to change defenses in the middle of their possession. We did it multiple times tonight. The only confusion it seemed to cause was for our own team. In other news, the Celtics are now 4-9. ;) -
So who's going to be the new Coach next year?
hoosierinIll replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
In no way am I suggesting that this person should be the next coach at IU...it would never happen, and it shouldn't, but take for instance Coach Greg Tonagel at Indiana Wesleyan (I'm an alum). In the 10 years that he's been there, he's won the conference 7 times (the last 6) and just won a NC this spring. He, of course, played for Drew at Valpo and he's been a winner in every program he's ever been part of. The guy can flat out coach! Is there a snowball's chance that he will ever coach at IU? No. All of this was to point out that there's some really good coaches out there that only need an opportunity. Is IU a school where you give that kind of opportunity. I don't think so. There's way too much money involved at this point to do something like that. However, I'm not sure how much worse we can get from a basketball standpoint. -
Don't forget the whipped cream! Heck, when I pick up persimmons half of them make it in the bucket. The other half go straight to the ole pie hole. I love those things!

So who's going to be the new Coach next year?
hoosierinIll replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think the term "proven coach" has as many interpretations as interpreters. What classifies a coach as being "proven?" Multiple Final Fours? A successful rebuilding job? Winning a national championship at the DIII level? Personally, I find many of those measuring tools to be irrelevant. The key is "fit." Who understands Indiana basketball? (Regardless if they played here.) Who can connect to Indiana high school basketball and not come across as "creepy?" Who can coach IU and make it THE destination for the imaginations of our youth in the state? When the game is on the line, who's the coach that you have confidence will out-strategize the opposing coach? Is it a coach that has won a national championship before? If so, great! But if the best candidate is an assistant at the DI level, then so be it. I'm just not sure we will have people doing the coaching search, if and when that happens, who can figure this stuff out. I firmly believe Crean isn't the guy. His oversigning and roster turnover habits are unhealthy for the program's culture. (I don't care how it always "works out") He's demanding and unclear about expectations with people who are involved with the program and in the athletic department. But bottom line- he isn't winning like he should at IU. (This isn't considering all of the other off-the-court issues, as well.) -

Crean stepping down is highly unlikely...especially since he has a buyout like he does! -

I would say we're close to the point of "with cause" right now. There were other drug issues on the team last year that never made it public. I like Glass, but he tied himself to a sinking ship with Crean's contract and he might go down with it...not to mention all the garbage that took place in WBB. -

348. Right now in Indiana there are 348 high school coaches at public schools and I'm convinced at least half of them know how to coach better than Crean. It's basketball, people, and this is Indiana...coaches know how to coach basketball here. Just find someone who can coach like crazy, graduate players and leave all the PR cheerleader stuff to our marketing folks. It really isn't that complicated, but it has to be right this time. Stevens gets it. Whitman gets it. Cheaney gets it. Fife gets it. Brownell gets it. Woodson gets it. Richard Pitino gets...no wait...scratch that name...he doesn't get it. -

It was bad, but man, give the crowd something to cheer for. I specifically remember them getting on their feet with a couple minutes left when we cam back on defense, and within five seconds the ball was going through the net...again. The crowd builds with success in the game. There's a reason the crowd energy didn't build tonight. -

Stan and Troy suspended for failed drug tests..
hoosierinIll replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This. I think this is a big deal for a lot of IU fans. Crean came in to the program repeating his "clean it up" jargon, but when it comes to fessin' up with his own team's flaws he has held back. That rubs people the wrong way. I have good reason to think that there have been other failed drug tests that have been that we haven't know about. I won't mention names. I'm not saying the fans need to know everything about the program, but don't make us out to be fools with our heads in the sand.
