IU @ Bowling Green Post-Game Thread
akhosrof replied to HoosierReb01's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
We can blame the coaching to a certain extent, but at the end of the game this loss comes down on the individual matchups on defense. The last two drives of the game were pure 1 on 1 matchups. If you are a B1G player, you need to step your game up and take some personal pride that a mid-major recruit isn't going to beat you in a single matchup. Our pass rush was pathetic, and BGSU was not doing anything special in pass protection, their bookends simply shutdown our defensive ends. Our corners on the last drive were getting out played. A mid-major WR recruit shouldn't run blow past a B1G CB recruit. It was happening all day, you would think BGSU was the better recruited team with how much faster their guys looked than ours. Both pass interference calls were due to our guys simply getting beat and making a desperation attempt. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners -
Looks awesome. I did my grilled onions with butter and Montreal Steak Seasoning. My wife doesn't usually eat onions but she ate these. Made me happy. Wife called for chicken that was more done this time. Not a fan, but sure enough it was dry and needed a sauce. I showed her what's up lol Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Haha I have the same problem. My wife likes all her meat very well done. I usually pull one of the steaks off when it's medium-rare, medium for myself :) Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
That's shocking to me, considering Maryland is one of the hotbeds of lax talent. I'm from Long Island, where there's varsity, JV, and middle school teams(my alma mater has 2 middle school teams). I remember having something similar to a tryout in primary school gym to weed out who had potential for playing further on.
Lacrosse is still a preppy sport. I would say in areas of the state that have similar demographics to Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, they have everything, middle school, JV, Varsity teams. Youth leagues are huge here as we have so many former high-level players in the area providing the best instruction. This is why I say the potential for expansion in the northeast alone is big.
Only problem is that outside of the east coast, lacrosse popularity is somewhat limited to major pockets in Ohio, STL, Denver, and then all along the west coast. I'm not sure about the south, honestly, but I'd suspect Texas has a size able following. The Midwest will be very slow in catching on to this sport. Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.
LOL that's where my best work is done as well! Here's is what I was getting at in my post. As popular as lacrosse is on the east coast, it is still only scratching the surface of its popularity. I'm in Maryland and a lot of schools still don't even have a JV team (all other sports do). Major universities in the South and Midwest have sizable student populations from the east coast. As lacrosse gets more popular on the east coast alone, the influx of players will have to look elsewhere for places to play. The potential for women's lacrosse is even greater IMO. Lacrosse is like soccer in the sense that there's a position for everyone regardless of size. In contrast to two of the most popular female sports, basketball and volleyball, where size is at a premium. Additionally, lacrosse has a reputation as a preppy sport, kind of like soccer, whereas field hockey and softball might not have the mainstream appeal to all girls. In short, I believe women's lacrosse is an easy sport for schools to add for Title IX. As far as lacrosse spreading to the South, I went to undergrad in the South (New Orleans) and the only people that played were east coast students. A lot of the club teams in the South are probably east coast kids who play casually. Outside of North Carolina, lacrosse hasn't caught on competitively. Although, Vanderbilt has a women's lacrosse team that plays in the Big East. I see the midwest catching on much more quickly. You mentioned St. Louis and Denver. The sport is picking up popularity in Chicago too. Bellarmine in Louisville has a really good D1 program. I even know of children playing in youth leagues in Omaha. Michigan made a Final Four a year ago with the majority of their best players from the Baltimore-area. They are recruiting the east coast hard. OSU and Michigan doing better, and a B1G lacrosse league, will only help the popularity in the Midwest. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

OSU, Michigan, PSU, UMD, Rutgers and JHU will be the men's lacrosse division. Take out JHU and add in NWU, and that's the women's division (NWU has an elite women's lacrosse team). JHU is staying independent in women's lacrosse for the time being, but I could see them joining the B1G in the future. On the east coast lacrosse is becoming wildly popular not only among men, but women too. I could see a lot of big schools adding a women's program before a men's program, like NWU has. It's a preppy sport that is a good way to recruit students from the east coast, and would be an easy Title IX pick up for schools. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Anyone try this? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005SFJLOI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2KYVKI6LKB0VB&coliid=I6DBZ6S7Q88L1 Last year I grilled pizza on my charcoal Weber grill. I put the stone right on the grate and put a tin of charcoal on the grate with the pizza stone so the cheese on top would melt before the bottom would burn. I used indirect heating as well. The pizza tasted awesome! Tasted like a genuine brick house oven pizza! It seems this attachment would save me a lot of trouble. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

OT: James Hardy injures 3 Cops in violent arrest
akhosrof replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
I remember Hardy during his time with the Ravens. Never heard anything bad about him just that he could never shake off his hamstring problems. He was signed to a futures contract after the 2010 season and actually had such a good off season in minicamps he was a tentative starter coming into training camp. However, he hurt his hamstring on one of the first days of camp and could never get back onto the practice field. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
As a Maryland resident this is definitely exciting for me! In addition to IU, there are a lot of PSU, OSU, and Michigan alum in the DC-area. In addition to the exposure for the league, it has to be exciting for the athletes to visit a new city like DC. As long as the tournament is not held on the east coast on a regular basis I don't think this is as big a deal as most are making it to be. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Cody Latimer: Top Bench Press Among WR's at NFL Scouting Combine
akhosrof replied to CR3AMnCR1MS0N's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Crazy, McShay just projected Latimer 23rd overall to the Chiefs. I don't know anything about Latimer personally, but hopefully Tandon Doss reaches out to him and talks to him about the importance of taking the job seriously and putting your work in. Coming out that young is a huge adjustment. http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2013-10-11/sports/bs-sp-ravens-tandon-doss-1012-20131011_1_tandon-doss-jacoby-jones-torrey-smith Looking back on his first two seasons, Doss laments not dedicating himself to football. He remembers watching Ray Lewis and Ed Reed put in extra work at the team facility and veteran receiver Anquan Boldin talking about the time he spent at home on his iPad, viewing game tape and mastering the playbook. But he never followed suit. Doss, who turned 24 last month, concedes that he didn't treat football like a profession in his first two NFL seasons. He says he has changed his approach after re-signing with the Ravens in Week 2, now asking more questions and scribbling down more notes. "I was young when I came into the league. I'm still young," Doss said. "I thought that was all I would have to do: come in here, go to practice, catch some balls and go home and call it a day. My mind just wasn't there. I don't know why. But it took me a while to understand that this is my job." Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Visiting Bloomington for the first time, any suggestions?
akhosrof posted a topic in Off Topic Forum
I will be staying in Bloomington from Saturday through Friday of next week for school. I have been to Indiana many times (wife is from Indianapolis) but never been to Bloomington. Just wanted to hear what are the must-do things in Bloomington? Thanks in advance from a new Hoosier! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Bloomington was awesome! Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I got my picture at the gates and in Assembly Hall (see avatar). The bar scene was a lot of fun. I definitely got a great feel for the campus. As far as food is concerned the best meal I had was a cheeseburger with peanut butter and jalapeños from Scotty's. Amazing! I just finished my sixth week of Focus T25. I am in grad school part-time and have a 55-mile commute each way to my full-time job, so I needed a fitness program that was extremely efficient for the short amount of time I can dedicate toward working out. So far I have been extremely impressed by the quality of work out that I can for into 25 minutes. For the first phase of the program (five weeks) I didn't diet just focused on improving my cardiovascular fitness. I didn't have any physical activity prior to starting. The last two weeks as I transitioned to the second phase of the program I have been on the paleo diet. I feel the diet has put my progress into overdrive. Right now I am down to 176 from about 183. My goal is another 7-10 pounds (I am 5'10"). Feels good to workout and be healthy again! After I finish the second phase of T25 I am thinking of buying the third. After that I want to do DDP Yoga. Has anyone tried that? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

As a new Hoosier I want to hear everyone's thoughts on the new division. Obviously the strength of schedule will be brutal playing OSU, MSU, Michigan and PSU every season. Geographically, being on the East coast myself I am happy I can see the Hoosiers play locally at Maryland and make short road-trips to Penn State and Rutgers. However it seams out of all the B1G the Hoosiers got the short end of the stick geographically. Yes we still get to play Purdue but lost two relatively close geographical rivals in Illinois and NWU (actually Columbus is probably a shorter road trip than Chicago?). On the flip side, Indiana could really benefit by playing in the bigger east coast markets. I know there are lots of Indiana alum in NYC and DC. What does everyone think the net gain or loss is? With that said I came across an interesting blog. The ACC is attempting to ease the requirements on conference championship games, potentially giving conferences the freedom to rid themselves of divisions. Anyways here is the blog post with a new B1G division free alignment. http://frankthetank.me/2014/02/06/its-not-business-its-personal-in-conference-realignment-and-other-random-thoughts/ In summary, no divisions, each school has three geographical rivals they play annually, and the top two records play in the conference championship. IU's rivals would be Purdue, IL, and NWU. The geographical rivals seem fair to everyone. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

James Franklin to Penn State, what does it mean for the Big Ten?
akhosrof replied to jdailey1981's topic in Off Topic Forum
I think saying James Franklin will turn around PSU is a little irrelevant. Bill O'Brien had that program going in a great direction. Both guys are great coaches and PSU was bound to contend for a B1G title whether Franklin or O'Brien was the coach.

Now I think the real impact Franklin will have is on recruiting. Franklin is from PA and has extensive experience recruiting the Mid-Atlantic. Really this puts big pressure on the new guys, Rutgers and UMD as Franklin will probably mop up that area taking away their recruits.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

I didn't mean with an OC hire. I meant general game planning. Right I agree CKW will end up calling the O, which means he needs a guy that he can trust to run the D as more of Wilson's time will be spent preparing on offense with Littrell gone.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
-

Could have, you're right. Who's to say CKW didn't have Knorr ranked higher on his list than Shannon? I'm not sure Shannon would be any better than Knorr. Regardless, I see your point and Shannon would have certainly been a flashy hire. Not sure how good a fit it would have been though...

One more point against a position coach is CKW probably had a good idea Seth Littrell was going to leave. As such he needed a guy who could take the reigns on defense as CKW might have to put more time in on the offense with the new OC.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
-
My thought on the Knorr hire is CKW wanted a guy with DC experience. The two names before Knorr, Todd Orlando and Barry Odom, were DCs. Doesn't seem like CKW reached out to a position coach. CKW is a smart guy, he knows very well he has two years or so to turn this defense around. His fate is very much tied to this hire. As such, it doesn't seem like CKW wanted to take a risk on promoting a position coach from elsewhere. While not flashy like a young position coach from an SEC school, Knorr seems like a safe hire, and also a smart hire.

I like the move. Odds are if you have a high scoring offense you're not going to have a lockdown defense. If your offense is scoring quickly the defense has less time to rest and the opposing offense is likely to air it out. To remedy giving up yards or possibly points you need a defense that can cause turnovers. It seems like Knorr's defenses are proven at forcing turnovers.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I live in Baltimore and obviously a huge Ravens fan. We had big expectations for Doss. Before the 2011 NFL Draft the Ravens front office gave Joe Flacco tape of receivers from that draft and Joe said to take Doss because he "looks easy to throw to." I realized Doss was young as a junior coming out, but he had the luxury of sitting behind a true professional in Anquan Boldin. In fact a lot of Ravens fans thought Doss had a similar game to Boldin. This season was supposed to be Doss's to breakout. For whatever reason it hasn't happened. Doss himself said earlier this season he didn't take football as seriously as he should have until he got cut by the Ravens this offseason. Doss has shown flashes by making some very difficult catches. At the same time he's dropped a few easy ones. I'm sure there was a little bit of a shaken confidence at one point. What impresses me the most about Doss is how elusive he is with the ball in his hands. He's not the fastest guy on the field but he has subtle moves that make guys miss. This is why he has been so good on punt returns. The Ravens already have a dynamic returner in Jacoby Jones so it has been tough for Doss to get returns. Jones is a free agent after this season so maybe Doss will get full-time retune duties next season. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
