IU vs Illinois Game Thread - 1/7 @ 5:00 ET

I re-watched the game, combing over only the minutes McRoberts played. I have to admit, the kid does something good on nearly every possession. He doesn't look to score but he finds a way to be involved in every play offensively and defensively. The good definitely outweighs the bad....I'm going to say I'm fine with the minutes he is logging and even in late game situations....Provided IU has the lead at that time. He can definitely help hold a lead. Otherwise, his man (no question) completely leaves him to help or is sagging heavily in the lane. They know he will not shoot. That's a hindrance when playing from behind. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I've been critical of his minutes. Not critical of his play but, more that there has been no benefit offensively. I feel he is taking minutes from guys who can score better, rebound better and have the confidence to make a move. Tonight was no different, essentially he did nothing. Passed up a WIDE open shot in the corner and was bailed out by an off ball foul. Clearly he lacks confidence to hoist it. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I said this in another thread. I feel, to get recruiting exposure, we need to take risks early. If we retain competitive talent next year, we should double and triple down on our non-con. I remember watching a game under RMK several years ago. The announcers were talking about recruiting at IU and Purdue Person Vitale suggested it was made easier for Indiana because the recruits knew that a majority of their games would be on CBS National or ESPN National. He made a direct correlation between the amount of national tv exposure and the number of quality recruits wanting to play on it. It's not without risk as the potential for losing is higher but, even so, I think there's more to be gained from losing to a powerhouse on national television than from a 40 point win on BTN plus over a team that one needs to look up to find out if it's real. In the post game presser, CTC mentioned McRoberts without having been asked a question. My take was that he must be getting questions concerning the amount of his playing time and went to defend Zach in a preemptive strike. Anyway, he said that ZM played 12 possessions in the game. We scored on 9 of those and they scored on only 2. Maybe I'm wrong about Zach. Maybe his contributions on defense and hustle are bigger than I thought. This^^^. I don't understand what he gives us. He can play average defense but won't score. Won't even look to score. Won't even think, about thinking, about scoring. Won't see me saying he is a liability, but simply does not deserve the minutes he is getting late in games. We will see it again, Zach pulling minutes, late in a close one. It will cost us. Well played game. Defense much better. Shooting much better. Movement better. Yes we took several 3's but they were mostly wide open and many times, were created by going inside to begin with. Everyone played well as a team tonight. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Don't limp home. Finish strong with the same intensity on defense that started the game. Come on now. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Great intensity first half. A few defensive mistakes but overall very good half. Good shooting, need to go inside now and getting to the line. Game is being called close with ol' Pats crew so let's make it an advantage. I know we have had defensive struggles as a team but I sure do like watching Rojo and O.G. play it. Let's go IU! Set the tone early. Run them off the floor. Let this be the turnaround game. Play with that chip on your shoulder. Get pissed. Play mad. No one believes in you, especially IU fans. Screw em. Play for your brothers on the team because that's all you have is each other. Go do it. Do it in spite of the doubters. Shut them up....Hard. Oh they can play ball. No doubt. I'd say top 20 talent without question. Again, I feel the need to be realistic though. Wisconsin and Louisville just proved where TB really is...proved OG isn't there yet....Proved Blackmon can't do everything....proved Rojo really is just a high 3 star doing high 3 star things. Proved Cujo and Green are not better than Newkirk...at all....yet. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree 100% that coaching is directly responsible for our slipping record but I'm just afraid that...well, maybe those early wins were the anomaly and not the norm. Hope not. I think they can pull it together. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

So how do we get those 5stars with consistency? Crean has the ability in that area I believe. Why are the state kids going elsewhere? I think there is a place to start. I think we need to take risks with the schedule. We stepped up a fraction this year but, I think we need to double and triple down on that provided we have maintained competitive talent next year. Big games, National t.v. Audiences.....exposure. I remember hearing commentators one time, talking about how Knight recruited easily because the players knew that a majority of their games would be played on CBS National or ESPN. It was like that, I remember. This creampuff schedule is hurting us in recruiting more than losing to a powerhouse on CBS in my opinion. I really hate that we are playing those teams in the non-con. I began watching IU basketball in 1991-92. A 6-7 year old kid from Wisconsin who just wanted to watch basketball with his dad. The Badgers, hadn't beaten Indiana in 20 some years and my father happened to like Indiana and Bob Knight. I loved watching those games. The 92 team featured Damon Bailey, Calbert Cheaney and Brian Evans. They were stars who all played 3-4 years. That team went on to the final four and lost to the eventual champion. I fell in love with march madness and cbb because of them and haven't missed a game since. To your point, I don't see the effort of today's players being different at all. This current group plays as hard as any of those teams in my opinion...truth. That said, I have to say this. What you are seeing is not a lack of effort or a lack of "IU Guys". What you are seeing is a lack of talent. Those teams from the past had recruiting rankings in the national top 5 EVERY YEAR. Look at KU, Duke, Kansas... Best recruiting classes annually=best teams annually. We recruit teams ranked much much further down the line and the results are as expected. Are we talented now? Yes. Are we top 10 talented? No. Fellas, we won national titles because we had the BEST PLAYERS CBB had to offer, and even when we didn't, We had arguably the best coaching staff and a system that would allow mediocre players to become great. Also, the landscape has changed so that the players from that era who would stay 3-4 nearly always, are today leaving after one or two. That's why the Kentucky's of the world recruit full teams each year. In my humble opinion, we can't recruit a class ranked above 40 and expect titles because they have the talent to beat Austin Pea by 50. Kentucky has the #1 class in the nation coming in next year....guess what ours is? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  25. Making the trip down for our first game at AH. Leaving tomorrow morning and should arrive by 2pm. Looking for suggestions on where to go / what to see? What are the best pre/post game drinking establishments? Where are the best eats? Nightlife? Is there something either on campus or off that I should not miss while there? Big deal for me.
