I feel so much more confident when I listen to Woodson talk about upcoming games. Crean would give us a bunch of baseless platitudes about "building a hunger to win" or "wanting it more than them" and Miller would prattle on about needing to make plays or some other boring gibberish.

I think we will see a lot of trayce at the foul line, Stewart on the wing, Kopp on a wing, and whoever the 4th is running baseline corner to corner. Would like to see bates and leal as the fourth should get good looks in the corners

Feel like x is fast and strong enough to break a zone when needed, but i agree i think FT’s are going to be huge this game

I’m still pissed at Tom Crean for that sweet sixteen against them so that’s fair I suppose

Woody: "We always felt teams zoned us because they couldn't play man-to-man. I don't know if that's the case, but this is Boeheim's way of coaching." Another example Woody picked up from Bob Knight. Woody just does it in a much more pleasant manner than RMK.

Beautiful comments above. I expect to see multiple well crafted approaches breaking the Syracuse zone, all of the above and some more. I hope to see lots of overloads to one side like Crean ran against them too. Those overloads seem from memory to be the only formations Crean ran against Syracuse that beat them consistently, and those overloads to one side Crean ran did beat the Syracuse zone consistently.

Raised on Bobby Knight basketball it was so disheartening coach after coach, ex-post Bobby Knight, to watch IU basketball teams struggle against zone defense. For 20ish years that always shocked me every play of every game I watched that happen.

I am very grateful and thankful to God right now that our chief coach and the other badass coaches on our staff now thrive on beating obstacles such as this Syracuse zone. They seem to know how to beat these obstacles and they seem to know how to teach multiple foundational concepts at top level of training to our hungry young, talented team. I love so much we finally have some of the best coaches in the game coaching our team again, like in classic IU days.

  2. the entire bench the entire game

    0 assists, 1 rebound

    8 turnovers, 5 fouls

    in 44 minutes of action

8 points scored are very far from making up for all of that eye popping activity on the negative side of the ledger, and this post represents only half of a full critique of the bench. the other half of a critique of our bench would be a post showing what Marshall did to us while our bench was racking up the stats listed above. this is a powerfully poor performance. extremely alarming after what seemed to be some signs of possible improvement. now we are at the end of the cupcake schedule. our bench does not look ready to help us win games.

  3. I like that the defense does not appear to be gimmicky in that the opponent is not held to an artificially lower score because on offense we run out the clock each possession and take a desperation shot in the last 10 seconds like it seems we did in different variations for most of the last 20 years of Indiana basketball now, Sampson years excluded.

Solid game against a bad opponent. I’m liking more of what I see from a team perspective but still need to cutdown on the boneheaded mistakes and improve at the line.

Durr and Lander need to slow just a tad on finishing around the rim. They sped themselves up and didn’t finish.

Bates is going to be good!

Love the improved % from deep. If we can hit at a high level or bigs and big wings are going to feast in the paint.

Does Leal inspire opponents? Think J State hit a few 3s and a long jumper when we was defending. 8/35 points - ouch.

I agree with all of this, and how did Bardo do? ha

Anthony Leal is still my favorite player on this team and nothing will change that. You can just tell he has a deep understanding of the game itself. Love seeing him get minutes.

I am so glad to say this. We seem to have a lot of guys like that now. It's early. I feel good about this team and this coaching staff, the program in general. I think, and pray and hope that this program seems to be headed in the right direction.
