They played a pretty good Manhattan team tonight. Just saying. Also, if you can shoot 57% from 3 you can score on any team, even pro. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

The Hoosiers played a great game after the wakeup call that was LIU-Brooklyn. Yogi Ferrell found his scoring game, exploding for 26 points, and it was a well-rounded team attack. There were dunks this game that were highlight-reel material, with Hanner Mosquera-Perea’s jam making #4 on the SportsCenter Top 10. Assembly Hall took a while to fill up, with a lot of seats in the bottom left open. Although it wasn’t quite full, it was still loud during certain parts. Troy Williams had an awesome put back dunk early on to get the crowd going, and with us scoring 54 points in the first half, the fans were completely engaged. Our 54 points are the most in a half for the Hoosiers since the game against Florida Atlantic last season. With a good performance like this, it further proves that the Hoosiers’ athleticism can take them far. I expect the arena to be a little fuller for upcoming games; it was kind of sad to see it so empty for that long. In Bennie Seltzer’s return to Assembly Hall, he had a great ovation. Along with that, referee Ed Hightower was honored with a couple minutes left in the game as Coach Tom Crean took the microphone and decided to give a speech. It was a very special night from both perspectives, and the great game by our Hoosiers only made it better. Analysis of (ALL) Players: Everyone had a great game, and there really isn’t much to say about each player. Yogi Ferrell led all scorers with 26 points and Noah Vonleh had another double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Let’s hope that this type of play continues in the following games going into the 2K Sports Classic in New York when we play Washington.

I agree with the point on the bigs. Fischer is still unproven, but I'm pretty sure he's better than he's shown. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Do you think Sheehey or Hollowell should come off the bench to create that spark and in turn start someone like Stan or Devin (With the way he's playing)? Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
Around the Country: It was an exciting week with some big time talent in Chicago for the Champions Classic. It was the first time that a national audience got a glimpse of talents like Julius Randle, Andrew Wiggins, and Jabari Parker on the college level. Along with that, there were numerous great matchups that were a part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon, which provided close games all day long. This season is already setting up to be a great one, with countless story lines that will continue during the next few months. Wooden Award candidate Doug McDermott had a 37 point game. Kevin Ware should be making his return to a regular season game pretty soon after a horrendous injury in last year’s Elite Eight. In the end, the freshman are going to take over most storylines this season because the upcoming NBA Draft is looking like it will be one of the best drafts in history. Here we go, folks, the season is underway. Let’s take a look back to the highlighted games of the past week: (18) Connecticut Huskies 78, Maryland Terrapins 77 Wrap Up: Shabazz Napier led the Huskies with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, en route to a close matchup with the Terrapins. After being up 12 at halftime, the Huskies had a little bit of a letup which allowed Maryland to climb back in it. Dez Wells had two chances to win the game in the final minute, but missed on both opportunities. Georgetown Hoyas 75, (19) Oregon Ducks 82 Wrap Up: Although the Ducks were missing two of their five starters (Carter and Artis) to suspension, they were able to pull out the win in South Korea for the Armed Forces Classic. Josh Smith, transfer from UCLA, led the Hoyas with 25 points, but it was not enough to top the electrifying Ducks. It was a great way to honor our Army members on Veterans Day weekend. North Carolina State Wolfpack 57, Cincinnati Bearcats 68 Wrap Up: Sean Kilpatrick and Justin Jackson led the charge for the Bearcats in this low-scoring affair. Jackson ended with a double-double and Kilpatrick had a game-high 21 points. With the loss of important players from last year’s squad, the Wolfpack struggled to score for much of the game. Both teams will find a way to be solid teams come tournament time. (14) Virginia Commonwealth Rams 59, (25) Virginia Cavaliers 56 Wrap Up: Treveon Graham led the Rams with 22 points with a 30 foot three pointer to win the game with approximately one second left. It was a game filled with emotion, competing for the best team in the state. The Rams “Havoc” full-court pressure forced 20 turnovers which ultimately led to the demise of the Cavaliers. (5) Kansas Jayhawks 94, (4) Duke Blue Devils 83 Wrap Up: This was a battle of the number one freshman against the number two freshman. Jabari Parker impressed throughout with his shooting, athleticism, and poise. Andrew Wiggins ended with a quiet 22 points and a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. This was a fantastic game, but the Kansas squad ran away with it in the second half. Both of these teams will be making runs in March. Here are the games to look out for in the upcoming week (all times Eastern): Robert Morris University vs. (1) University of Kentucky Date and Time: November 17 @ 7 PM Television Coverage: ESPN2 Preview: Kentucky is looking for revenge in this one. Last year, they had to play at Robert Morris in the opening round of the NIT because of scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena. Kentucky ended up losing that game, one of the biggest upsets of the year, even though it didn’t really matter at all. This year, Kentucky is much better with arguably the best recruiting class in history. They get to play in Rupp Arena this year. Sorry about this one guys, but it won’t even be close. Robert Morris got lucky last year and they will need a lot more of it to come away with a win in this one. ( 13 ) Memphis University vs. ( 8 ) Oklahoma State University Date and Time: November 19 @ 8 PM Television Coverage: ESPN Preview: Here is yet another big time matchup between ranked teams early in the season. Although it can be argued that Memphis shouldn’t be ranked this high and that Oklahoma State, with the return of LeBryan Nash and Marcus Smart, should be ranked higher. So far, Oklahoma State has started off 2-0 with two complete blowouts. Oklahoma State is good this year, so I fully expect them to come away with this one, but Memphis is always sneaky. They could come away with this one if they play a perfect game. Either way, it’ll be worth watching. (19) University of Connecticut vs. Boston College Date and Time: November 21 @ 7 PM Television Coverage: ESPN2 Preview: This game is a part of the 2K Sports Classic in New York City at Madison Square Garden. The winner of this matchup will play the winner of the game between Indiana University and the University of Washington, which is why this game is so important. Connecticut has one of the best backcourts in the nation and they are going to be a very solid team this year, but Boston College has an elite guard/scorer in Olivier Hanlan. In my opinion, this one could go either way. Both games in this tournament will be fun to watch and the final will be even better. Around the Big Ten: The conference looks really good again; possibly still the best in the nation. Indiana has started its season with an easy win, followed by a much tougher victory. Mitch McGary is still out with a back injury, but Michigan has found their groove. Michigan State is shaping into a national title contender with their unique blend of talent and experience. Wisconsin has had a couple of quality wins in the past week and they are looking for more. Ohio State has controlled both of their opponents with no problem. To put it simply, every Big Ten team is undefeated thus far, except for Penn State after their loss to Bucknell. It’s looking like this will be another great year for the Big Ten in non-conference play. Let’s take a look back to the highlighted games of the past week: St. John’s Red Storm 75, (20) Wisconsin Badgers 86 Wrap Up: This was a very atypical game for the Bo Ryan led Wisconsin Badgers by allowing 75 points. The Badgers were able to withstand a 27 point performance by D’Angelo Harrison of the Red Storm. Wisconsin had five of their players score in double figures on their way to a solid win. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 55, Nebraska Cornhuskers 79 Wrap Up: Florida Gulf Coast, in their new era of coaching, came out flat in this game and it wasn’t close throughout. Nebraska looked like the better team and a much improved squad over a year ago, especially without suspended player Ray Gallegos. Florida Gulf Coast looks like they had a little bit of luck last year, but Nebraska looks like a middle of the pack contender in the Big Ten. (2) Michgan State Spartans 78, (1) Kentucky Wildcats 74 Wrap Up: Coach Calipari said that this game wasn’t fair. Tom Izzo responded by saying the Wildcats should forfeit. I think old Tom got the best of Coach Cal this time. The Spartans took a 10-0 lead just four minutes in, which helped them quite a bit. Keith Appling, Gary Harris, and Adreian Payne led the Spartans charge, while trying to stop Julius Randle of Kentucky. Both teams look like serious title contenders, but Michigan State is the clear favorite to win the Big Ten now after they will take over the number 1 ranking in the upcoming polls. (11) Florida Gators 53, (20) Wisconsin Badgers 59 Wrap Up: The Gators had a couple important players suspended for this game and the Wisconsin Badgers took advantage. The Badgers played good defense in this game, holding the Gators to 53 points, and had a big game from Sam Dekker, who led with 16 points. Bo Ryan’s team had started off the season with two quality wins over quality opponents, setting them up for yet another great year. Northwestern Wildcats 59, Stanford Cardinal 71 Wrap Up: The Wildcats were not able to come away with a victory in Palo Alto, as Stanford had a strong second half to pull away. Northwestern, in their first year under Chris Collins, has some key returning members that could help with a run to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever, but they couldn’t win this one; an important résumé builder. Stanford’s star player, Dwight Powell, was held to only 9 points and 3 rebounds, but other members of the Cardinal were able to step up and lead the team to victory in this Power Conference matchup. Here are the games to look out for in the upcoming week (all times Eastern): (10) Ohio State University vs. (17) Marquette University Date and Time: November 16 @ 1 PM Television Coverage: FOX Preview: This is an early season matchup of two teams ranked in the top 20. Marquette lost their leading scorer from last year in Vander Blue, but are still returning key members. Similarly, Ohio State lost their leading scorer in DeShaun Thomas, but have other players such as Aaron Craft, Lenzelle Smith, Jr., LaQuinton Ross, and Shannon Scott. Both teams come into this game at 2-0 looking for a quality win to put on their résumé. This will be a pretty good game with March seeding implications. I’m looking for Ohio State to come away with a win, but it won’t be easy for the Buckeyes. (7) Michigan University vs. Iowa State University Date and Time: November 17 @ 5 PM Television Coverage: ESPN2 Preview: Michigan has a tough time in their first half of the season, but have been dominant since then. Both of these teams were tough teams last year and are returning key players. Iowa State gave Ohio State trouble last year in the tournament and should be just a tough this year if they are able to shoot the ball. Michigan’s biggest questions come in with their point guard play and the health of Mitch McGary, who has yet to play this year with back issues. I’m sure Michigan will end up pulling this one out, but I wouldn’t write the Cyclones off just yet. Nebraska University vs. University of Massachusetts Date and Time: November 21 @ 12:30 PM Television Coverage: ESPNU Preview: UMass is coming off of two big wins against LSU in the Tip-Off Marathon and Boston College in their opener. This is a really good team that should end at the top of the Atlantic Ten this year, led by point guard Chaz Williams. He is a small point guard, but he is one of the best in the nation. Every one of their other players is extremely athletic and long, which will help them against Nebraska. Ray Gallegos should be back from his suspension for the Cornhuskers, adding another scoring threat. I think the Minutemen will run away with this one, but Nebraska is still a much improved team over last year. UMass is dangerous; watch out for them.

For all intents and purposes, they got lucky. They didn't have to play at Rupp. That's the first sign of luck. But I do agree with you guys, they didn't even act like they cared. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I agree here, I think we still try to get one of these two just to round out the class a little more. I personally think we need JL more than Bolden though because we are stacked at the forward position for years to come. I don't think we need either one of them, and if we don't get either one of them, I won't be upset.

I'll be there! Looking for us to bounce back and play a good game. -
i literally just want an overall rating. You can base it on whatever you'd like.

Sorry, I realize this is a little off topic, but it is still about IU basketball. Hey guys, I'm conducting a survey to do some research to compare this year's basketball team to that of 2008, the last year under Kelvin Sampson. I was wondering if you'd all be interested in rating every player on this year's team from 0-100. It's very simple and shouldn't take you too long. I don't need a ton of responses, but a few would be great! Preferably I'd ratings for the following players: Will Sheehey Yogi Ferrell Troy Williams Noah Vonleh Jeremy Hollowell Stanford Robinson Devin Davis Collin Hartman Evan Gordon Hanner Mosquera-Perea Peter Jurkin Austin Etherington Thanks guys, I know it's asking a lot.

This kind of post is the only reason I hate this site. I love BtownBanners, but STOP overreacting to every single thing. He obviously can coach. Where were we in his first year? Argument made. We will win one in his tenure and I think he's the perfect coach for IU basketball. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Just a note, the CUSA doesn't exist anymore. But I agree. There are only so many mid majors that people even know of. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I think we can all agree on one thing: we did not expect this game to be nearly as close as it was. But in the end, a win is a win, right? It goes on the résumé as a W and we are 2-0 once again. It’s safe to say that with every basket that went in en route to our comeback, Assembly Hall got louder. Will Sheehey and Troy Williams both hit big shots down the stretch when the team needed them most. Noah Vonleh kept the team in the game throughout the first half, banging down low and grabbing rebounds left and right. Vonleh ended with his second straight double-double. The ultimate takeaway from this game and the atmosphere surrounding it is that the fans had something huge to cheer about. A dunk is a dunk, a blocked shot is a blocked shot, and so on. But for the first time this year, there was tension. Whether you like it or not, human beings enjoy tension. Even though it was our Indiana Hoosiers, there was still a sense of tension that just proved, once and for all, that college basketball is back. We love college basketball because of upsets like the one we averted last night. This is a learning experience. We can all get better from this. Fans don’t need to overreact; the team didn’t. Look where they ended up. They all kept their cool and came back from an early deficit. Now it's time for some Player Analysis: Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell – Yogi was able to score last night like we know he is able to this season. He knocked down 3 three-pointers which helped him end with a solid 17 points. He is one of our leaders and many scrutinized his actions after taking out his frustration on the bench. Personally, I like to see the fire within him come out like that. Last year, he knew it would be easy to run a team with four 1,000 point scorers. This season, it will be challenging. He knows that, and I think he’s willing to take the challenge. Will Sheehey – Will stepped up when we needed him the most. He scored a game-high 19 points, with 15 coming in the second half. Will stuffed the stat sheet with a total of 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. He struggled mightily in the first half, not making a single shot from the field. After last night, I can say that Will is going to be the senior leader that we need. He knew when to “take over” and hit huge shots down the stretch, especially from long range. Jeremy Hollowell – Jeremy, after a career-high 16 points in game one against Chicago State, looked a little lost in this game. He finished with 6 points and 6 boards. He was in foul trouble for most of the night, which didn’t help his performance whatsoever. He will bounce back. It wasn’t just a tough night for him, it was a tough night for everybody. Noah Vonleh – This man is a beast on the boards. I think I can keep opening his analysis with that sentence. He kept us in the game in the first half when everybody else looked as if they had no idea how to play basketball. He was willing to put the team on his shoulders and go down on the block and bang with the big men from LIU-Brooklyn. He tallied another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. I cannot wait to see where he can take this team and how he grows throughout the rest of the year. Troy Williams – No one expected Troy Williams to hit a three to keep us in the game, but he did it. When he put that shot up, everyone was yelling “NO!” But it went in. Troy’s athleticism becomes a problem at times because he wants to make the highlight play, rather than the simple play. I expect that to be tamed a little from now on, but I still love his upside. He is extremely athletic and long. Although I think he could have a bigger impact on defense, he still played a great game (second half). Stanford Robinson – Once again, I’m not really sure where Stan was last night. He did make two of his three shots and got to the line for two free throws, but other than that he didn’t look great. His one turnover was awful; he just let the defender take the ball. I know Stan can have an enormous impact on this team and I expect it to come soon. Devin Davis – Devin had a huge rebound with 4.8 seconds left to give us a one and one at the free throw line at the other end. Although he missed it, at least he was able to get the ball down to our side of the court with that rebound. He didn’t score this game after having double-digits in the opener, but his defensive prowess made an impact late. He played big minutes in the big parts of the game, which is key for a freshman like him. I’m excited to see where he goes. Hanner Mosquera-Perea – I would love to talk about how much I love his athleticism once again, but he just wasn’t active last night. I don’t know what was up with him. He grabbed a couple rebounds, but it really didn’t matter. I just want him to try to make a difference in the game, but he just doesn’t seem to want to. Evan Gordon – He does a really good job of taking care of the ball when asked to do so. He didn’t score and looked bad in the first half. He still hasn’t hit a three for us, which we really need. But he is a leader, albeit a quiet leader. He looks like he has the poise and confidence that it takes to win games like last night’s. Luke Fischer – We need to work on Luke’s hands. He missed a couple passes that were simple catches. He didn’t play until late in the second half and came in with a protective mask on his face. Although I don’t know why he had the mask, he ended up throwing it off after a few seconds of play anyway. We could use Luke’s big body down low, but he still hasn’t looked like the great player we thought we were getting. Austin Etherington – He played early in the game and never saw the floor again. I don’t think he’s that great and while he was out there, he didn’t make an impact. Here’s to wishing he can make an impact in limited minutes from here on out. Otherwise, he may end up transferring, a la Mo Creek (who had 19 points last night for GW). All in all, this can be used for growth. I love the upside of the team and multiple players, so cut them a little slack. This season is not completely over. Not even close.

Although it was a close game, Assembly Hall was rocking. Each shot made the crowd louder. The atmosphere is unlike any other, even when playing a “cupcake” like LIU-Brooklyn.I think we can all agree on one thing: we did not expect this game to be nearly as close as it was. Wiggins is number one based on potential. Both Parker and Randle are further along in their progression. I still think Wiggins has the talent to end up being an NBA MVP. -

Yeah in the first half it was pretty dead. But once we started hitting threes and stuff in the second half it was rocking. Got pretty loud near the end, especially with Devin Davis' rebound with 4.8 left.
