    RIP Walt Bellamy

Former IU men's basketball All-American Walt Bellamy, the first Hoosier ever to be selected with the top pick in an NBA draft, has died at 74 the Atlanta Hawks announced this afternoon. "If you are naming the all-time best player at Indiana University, Walt Bellamy has to be in the conversation," said IU Hall of Famer and former sports editor of the Bloomington Herald Times Bob Hammel. "He was so powerful and very agile and was always appreciative of the recognition he received from IU. A native of New Bern, North Carolina, Bellamy played for the Hoosiers from 1958-61 and Hall of Fame Coach Branch McCracken. Bellamy graduated from IU with the most rebounds in a career with 1,088 in only 70 games, while averaging 15.5 a game. Averaging 20.5 points a game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, Bellamy also averaged 17.8 rebounds a game (still Indiana's record).[2] He also holds the school records for most rebounds in a season (649), most rebounds in a single game (33), most double-doubles in a career (59), most rebounds in a three-year career (1,008). In his final college game, he set IU and Big Ten Conference records that still stand with 33 rebounds (and 28 points) in an 82-67 win over Michigan. Bellamy was named an All-American in both his junior and senior year (1960 and 1960) and was the first Hoosier taken No. 1 in the NBA draft (1961, Chicago Packers) and the first Hoosier named NBA Rookie of the Year. In 1960, he was a member of the gold medal winning US Olympic team along with Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. In 1982, he was among those to comprise the first class of the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was selected to Indiana University's All-Century Team. Bellamy played in the NBA for 14 seasons and put up monster numbers for the Chicago Packers (1961-63), Baltimore Bullets (1963-65), New York Knicks (1965-68), Detroit Pistons (1968-70), Atlanta Hawks (1970-74) and New Orleans Jazz (1974). Bellamy was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1962 after having arguably one of the three greatest rookie seasons in NBA history (along with Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson). His 31.6 points per game average that season is second all-time for a rookie to Wilt Chamberlain's 37.6, and the 19 rebounds per game he averaged that season is third best all-time for a rookie (to Chamberlain's 27 and Bill Russell's 19.6). Bellamy also led the NBA in field goal percentage in his rookie season, and had a 23-point, 17-rebound performance in the 1962 NBA All-Star Game. He was a four-time All-Star who averaged 20.1 points and 13.7 rebounds in his career. In 14 years in the league, he played in 1,043 of 1,055 possible games and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Bellamy spent his later years working for the NAACP in Atlanta. Press Release

    Yup.
  14. Welcome Aboard! Larry Crisler doesn't want the next step in his baseball career to be handed to him. So when Indiana University offered him a scholarship, but told him he'd have to work for every opportunity, it sounded like exactly the right fit. "I just liked the challenge that came with it," the Bishop Noll senior said. "When I started with Dave (Griffin) at Playmakers, I wasn't going to be the best and that's why I wanted to play there. "I just liked that (the Hoosiers) said I'd have to work for everything. That will make me work harder. Nothing is given me." The outfielder hit .467 for the Warriors last season, with 15 doubles, 50 runs and 35 stolen bases. He spends his winter months on the basketball team, where he averaged 19.1 points and 8.7 rebounds as a junior. Indiana's baseball team is coming off of its first appearance in the College World Series, a perk that Crisler called "just a bonus." Crisler, who wants to major in a subject that will keep him hands-on in sports, said he had narrowed his choices to Wright State, Purdue and Indiana. The early signing period for baseball begins Nov. 13. "I wanted to make sure to get (the commitment) out of the way now," Crisler said. "From the first time I went there, I felt very comfortable." 17. http://www.indystar.com/article/20131031/SPORTS02/310310051/High-school-recruiting-notes-Eron-Gordon-plans-frequent-trips-Indiana-watch-brother-play?nclick_check=1 Expect to see North Central sophomore guard Eron Gordon at a number of Indiana basketball games this winter, when his schedule allows. Don’t read too much into it. It’s not that the 6-2 Gordon isn’t high on the Hoosiers (he is), but he plans on seeing as many of his brother Evan’s games as possible. Evan Gordon has one year of eligibility at Indiana after transferring in from Arizona State . “I have to be a little careful with IU because I want to give every school recruiting me a fair chance,” he said. “Every time I do down there this year, it’ll be for Evan not for my recruitment.” Gordon, who averaged 19.3 points as a freshman and is considered one of the top players in his class in the country, said Indiana “is definitely one of the schools that I like.” He has offers from Indiana, Purdue, Arizona State and Nebraska and has a number of other schools in heavy pursuit, including Michigan and Butler, the latter which had coach Brandon Miller and assistant Michael Lewis in to watch open gym on Wednesday. Gordon said new schools showing interest include Duke, Iowa, Kentucky and UCLA. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to the head coaches yet, but it gives me a wider variety of schools to look at,” he said. With his sophomore season on the horizon, Gordon said he’s not all that locked into recruiting right now. “I’m playing the waiting game a little bit so I know what opportunities I’ll have,” he said. Gordon is part of a young team that adds 6-6 freshman Kris Wilkesto the mix this year. Wilkes was offered a scholarship by Indiana in August. “Physically he still needs some work, but every freshman needs some work physically,” Gordon said. “But he’ll be fine. He’ll be able to contribute for us right away. He’s a really good player.”
