Makes sense. The CFP committee obviously wanted ND in this year. Their rankings show that quite clearly. But their hand was forced.

Also that ACC statement is hilarious in that there was no mention of their conference champ Duke.  lol… With Duke the only really good basketball team, that conference is hanging on by a three.

Losers. They going all-in independent?

I'd love to see them in the B1G so they can get routinely pounded by Indiana, Michigan, OSU, Oregon. That will never happen, but where ever they go, they're gonna have to start playing a real schedule if they want any true credibility.

This actually makes sense if you think about it. I can't seem to find it but I recall talking about ND's independent status regarding the new CFP format and how it might impact the program. Looks like after year two of the format they're scrambling to figure out how to ensure they get in. Personally, I think it's a knee jerk decision, much like PSU firing Franklin, to withdraw. They were the CFP runner-up last year. I guess the ACC is getting so bad they see the writing on the wall to move on to greener pastures.

Ok, coffee spitting moment of the morning: some ND guy trying to justify their schedule defended playing Navy as a “rivalry game”

Dude replied: “Notre Dame-Navy is a rivalry like polar bears and seals.”

Don't eff with a SEAL, man.

That would be great.  It's an extremely logical fit as we all know.  And I really dislike them (probably #3 most disliked behind PU and OSU for me), so playing them would be fun.

Sadly, I suspect there is very little chance they join the B1G anytime soon.

Have a few ND fan friends who think they're going to strike a similar arrangement with the Big 12

If any of the other 3 major conferences talk to them, they will be insisting that the football program also join, correct? That is how they got in this mess in the first place.  According to the agreement with the ACC right now, I believe they have to play a certain number of their conference teams which was 5 this season.  If they were a full member of the ACC, they would've been in the championship game against Virginia and in the CFP.  They screwed themselves in my opinion just to stay independent.

ND in the Big 10 makes a lot of sense. Not sure if it ever happens though. I think playing OSU, Michigan, PSU, and IU regularly would give them more losses each year than they're comfortable with.

Their reaction to not making the playoffs has been eye opening and some of the logic is really funny. On one of their main boards, the most popular idea being shared is to start their own national conference with East and West divisions lol. "College football needs Notre Dame more than Notre Dame needs the rest of college football" ... is just downright funny.

Some want to rip the band aid off and just join a conference. Others say conferences would benefit disproportionately from having ND's brand and they'd lose their "seat at the table" as the only single school with an AD who faces off with all these conference commissioners. Many of them are coming to grips with the reality that it's time to join a conference and they don't actually have as much leverage as they thought they did. So they're starting to ask "would the Big Ten even have us? And on what terms?" ... when not so long ago they were the apple of every conference's eye during expansion.

Won't be surprised at all if ND plays a major part in putting the final nail in the NCAA's coffin. Seems inevitable the way things are headed.

Mostly agree, but I’m guessing it’s about scheduling. IU pulled out of the Virginia game this year. If UM and USC had done the same, one of them would be in the playoffs. I think the committee will point to Alabama and say “see we won’t punish you for playing OCC too much.” But USC already pulled out of the ND series and so did Michigan. ND was beating both regularly. And for as much as the B1G wants to say they don’t play anybody they didn’t have any trouble going through us and Georgia last year and beat PSU in a close one. They need a scheduling tie-in to ensure some quality games.

Wouldn’t shock me. If TT can keep the money going. An ND tie-in and maybe one other school there can find a sugar daddy and be a contender, they become a bit of a counterweight to the Big 2. ACC is hanging by a thread. First chance they get, FSU and Miami are out of there with UNC and Duke not far behind.

And as much as basketball plays second fiddle, there’s no way any new alliance is leaving the NCAA tournament money in limbo. Big 12 is a huge part of that. Them plus the Big 2 plus a few of the Miamis/FSUs/Dukes getting absorbed and you can see the bones of a new super league being formed in the next decade.
