The problem I see is that if Edey is back, teams aren't going to be backing off of their shooters like they did last year.  Smith I can see being less effected than Loyer because I think Smith has more ability.  But if your two returning scorers are Loyer and Smith I don't think that spells success.

Loyer is a better scorer than Smith. I'd say Loyer is probably going to be shooting 38%+ and probably averaging 12-14. He will be their 2nd option on offense if Edey comes back. If Edey doesn't, Loyer probably steps in to being #1 and averages probably 15-17. Painter is without a doubt a hell of a coach. And regular season wise, he is very very good. So I see no reason to believe Purdue wont continue being a Top 30 team without Edey. Their weaknesses and strengths will definitely change without Edey.

Loyer as their lead scorer, lol. Sign me up for that please. They'd be lucky to win 10 games

It would be a blood bath. Loyer was very unimpressive to me.

Did he get the highest-quality shot in the entire NCAA all year long? Has to be close to it.

He may have but he's going to get his points in a Painter system. Without Edey, Purdue probably speeds things back up since they don't have to go at his speed. Smith, Loyer, Colvin, Gillis and Furst is good enough to finish Top half of the Big Ten without any doubt. And considering it's Purdue, probably finish like 6th and lose to an 11 seed.

Get his points in what way? He shot 37% from the field this season. That is AWFUL for the quality of shot he got. It's awful for anyone, especially him.

And no.. the lineup you listed is absolutely horrendous. How would they initiate offense? Who would you play through?

Yeah, I'm not going to say Loyer and Smith are terrible players - I think they are good. But I also think they benefited greatly from the focus being on Edey. Without him, they will be exposed a bit.

We exposed them twice, without our starting PG.

Undoubtedly you're correct. Teams will pressure them even more.

It feels like Purdue will be featuring a lot of quality role players without Edey.

Some aren't even quality and zero are proven as "the guy".

I'm not big on Loyer's game at all. Plus he's weak and a poop defender. I like Smith, admittedly... he and Cupps simply can't be on the same roster.

Loyer keeps trying the stuff that worked for him in HS.  He drives to the basket constantly without being able to finish and prays for a foul.  He could do that at Homestead and the SAC.  Doesn't work so well in the B1G.

Well they'd probably play through Furst and Loyer. You act like players can't improve from season to season... Yet if that was IUs lineup entering the year... Top 5 in the B1G and people here would be going wild. Painter is a good coach and really that's enough because he just seems to get a lot out of his teams.

Huh? If Indiana was returning a team with Furst and Loyer as their best players, this board would be jumping off the ledge and demanding Woodson be fired.

Alright man. I think Furst looks like a "first big off the bench" type guy, and Loyer, to me, at best is a 3pt specialist? off the bench.

Loyer went 8-24 this past season against Indiana. and I think he hit 1 or 2 slop shots to get him there. Absurdly ineffective.

After the season that just happened? Nah they'd be ready to go. I'm sure it was the same for the 2013-2014 season... Which fell flat on its face. And that could happen for Purdue as well.

Sure.. as a freshman. Players can indeed improve. Even if it is something Indiana fans are not exactly used to.
