Alternative Rankings

Recommended Posts

While AP and ESPN both have Indiana ranked 5th, but on kenpom they remain number one. I was wondering what you guys thought about different rankings, such as kenpom and sagarin. Do you give them the same, more, or less weight than the "traditional" voter rankings?

I never really know how to take the kenpom ratings. I realize they take into account adjusted stats and such, but it does honestly confuse me as to why they still put us first and have Duke at 4, behind Florida and U of L nonetheless. Since I don't follow them that closely I guess I can't make and true judgments, it just seems odd that through the competition those top four have played and how each fared that Duke would have the top spot. So basically I just use kenpom to throw in people's faces when they talk about us being overrated  :D

Well kenpom, to my understanding, takes out tempo and puts everyone on an average scale. On that scale, Indiana has the best combination of offense and defense. It also takes into account intangibles like luck, but puts very little weight on actually win/loss records. I think it also factors in strength of schedule, but I'm not sure as to what degree.

I follow Kenpom and Sagarin ratings way closer than I do AP or Coaches. Public bias and perception are horrible ways to compare teams. There will always be statistical anomalies, but I think they do a better job of identifying teams with potential. IU is number one for a reason, to beat IU, you are going to have to shoot lights out, because

Even if our best shooter goes 0-10, we can still win.

Indiana is the most diversified scoring team out there. That is reflected In KenPom's ratings.
