Class of '66 Old Fart

2023 Big Ten Baseball Tournament

Hoosiers lead 3-1 after 3 complete.

Bit of a wild game.  Hoosiers have already committed 3 errors, one of which accounted for Iowa's lone run.  Iowa's ace, Brecht already up to 69 pitches and has walked 2 and hit 2 batters.  Sinnard  has given up 2 hits, 1 BB and thrown 53 pitches.

After 6, Hoosiers lead 4-1 despite having just 5 hits.  We had runners on the corners with 2 outs and Glasser got an rbi single in the 6th.

New Hoosier pitcher to start the 7th, Craig Yoho.  Sinnard had a strong 6 innings and only gave up 5 hits and 2 BB throwing 117 pitches.

Sinnard with 5 strikeouts today and 109 for the season –– ties for no. 1 on Indiana’s single-season strikeout record all-time with Eric Arnett (2009) & Vernon Wilshere (1934).  One more K breaks it.

Yoho off to a rocky start in the 7th.  Got the first batter out but then gave up a BB and 2 singles that scored an Iowa run to make it 4-2 and Connor Foley took over mound duty with runners on the corners but a BB loaded the bases with just 1 out.  An Iowa double scored 3 runs and they take a 5-4 lead.

Should that not have been a ground rule double for the ball getting stuck at the base of the wall? Or was that wiped out b/c Jessee didn't throw his hands up?

Yeah, unless the rules are applied differently in college baseball, pretty sure that should have been a ground rule double and the runner that was on 1st should have returned to 3rd. Maybe he scores anyway since there was only 1 out but that was a huge run.

Foley put runners on 1st and 2nd in the 8th with 1 out and was replaced on the mound by Hayden who strikes out the first batter he faces and gets a fly out to end the Iowa 8th.

We go meekly in our 8th.  6 of our last 7 batters have struck  out.  Not trying to be unduly pessimistic but if we can't pull this out in the 9th, we'll fall into the loser's bracket and play Michigan tomorrow at 3:00 ET.

Right now it is not clear who you can trust in the bullpen. The bottom of the pen has gotten better as guys like Ty Bothwell, Even Whiteaker, Luke Hayden (minus the home run yesterday), and Ben Seiler have really gotten better recently. However, Yoho, Kraft, Manase, and Foley have struggled last couple times out after being the teams best arms most of the season.

It feels like right now you have about 10 pitchers who are all decent but prone to a bad day. Makes it tough heading into NCAA's to know who to throw in a tight situation. However, team is playing with house money right now and this year has been an unmitigated success.

I've gotta stop watching IU Baseball. When I do all they do is strikeout on offense and make errors on defense :(

I know it's a small sample size, but they have looked horrible (@Mich St, Iowa and so far today.)

Young team that has hit the wall?
