Class of '66 Old Fart

2023 Big Ten Baseball Tournament

Recommended Posts

Hoosiers win 4-3 but the 9th inning was a little too interesting.  We'll face Iowa on Thursday at 3:00 ET.

Illinois scored first a single run in the 5th and we responded with 2 runs of our own in the bottom of the inning.  Stayed 2-1 until the 8th when we picked up 2 more runs thanks to the bats of Pyne and Jessee.

Seiler started and went 2 innings giving up 2 hits.  Phillips pitched the 3rd and 4th allowing 2 hits and an Illini run.  Whiteaker took over in the 5th and pitched into the 9th and only allowed 1 hit.  With 1 out and a runner on 1st in the 9th, Risedorph relieved Whiteaker and struck out the first batter he faced.  An infield single put runners on 1st and 2nd and a BB loaded them up.  A throwing error by Glasser let 2 runs score to make it 4-3 with runners on the corners but a fly out ended the game.

Great game!

Illinois is built all wrong for that park as they rely almost exclusively on the HR for scores and IU took full advantage! For the same reason IU went 0-2 in 2019 as almost exclusively a home run team Illini are likely to do same now.

Hoosiers and Hawkeyes are custom built for this park with deep pitching staff and relying on small ball a lot and only needing dingers if they come naturally. I will be shocked if IU and Iowa are not playing in semi's Saturday again.

Just please clean up the defense from the ninth. Won't get away with that against Hawks who you will be likely playing at least two of your next three games if not all three.

I like how the pitching is set up, even without Kraft this weekend.  I especially like it when we get 55 pitches- 4.1IP 6K of 1 hit ball from Whiteaker. Wow, what a time to come up big, and as Mercer mentioned other FR threw huge innings today and Seiler was very solid to start the game.

Brecht will be on 5 days rest, but yes.  I don't think he'll throw much over 80-85 pitches, if that, but... can we get to him before that?

Iowa has a lot of arms.

The Brecht vs. Sinnard matchup tomorrow is must see TV. Could literally be the first team to score wins as both pitchers completely dominated the others offense in the regular season and this park is much more pitcher friendly than Bart Kaufman Field is.

Brecht looked like a legit major league pitcher last time we faced him. This will be a very tough game.

In an elimination game, #5 Rutgers pitcher walked a #8 Michigan State batter with the bases loaded in the top of the 8th and Michigan State took a 5-4 lead.  Rutgers brought in a new pitcher and he walked in another run to make it 6-4 and that was the final score.  Rutgers can cry in their beer on their flight back to Pissitaway.

Spartans stay alive and tomorrow will play the loser of Maryland vs Nebraska in another elimination game.
