Class of '66 Old Fart

IU Baseball @ Michigan State - May 18-21, 2023

Recommended Posts

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY.  Not your usual weekend schedule for our final games of conference play.  Michigan State (30-19) (10-11).  Their conference record isn't very good but they are (15-3) when playing at home.

All 3 games will be televised on basic BTN television.  Thursday and Friday games slated for 8:00 starts and Saturday a 3:00 first pitch.  Current weather outlook indicates possible rain showers on Friday but dry on Thursday and Saturday.

Last evening Coach Mercer announced Luke Sinnard will be on the mound Thursday with Friday and Saturday starters TBD.

Unreal. Maryland just scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to beat Penn State 17-15.

We're tied at 2 in the bottom of the third.

4-2 good guys in the middle of the 5th...

That was the ultimate situation where IU did everything according to planned and it did not work out. Sinnard gave you his usual solid outing. We all just expect Kraft to be perfect as he has been all season and finish the game and just did not have it tonight. Apparently left with an injury also which could be really bad for postseason if it is serious.

This feels like the Illinois game where in that opener (who is of similar quality to MSU) you lost a close one and burned through good pitching but still won the last two somehow. Need to do that again. That matchup with the Illini and tonight are really the only times all season the Hoosiers had a lead late and lost it. Otherwise been nearly flawless in these close games.

NCAA chances are still a lock and a two or three seed in Big Ten Tourney (and two or three is basically the same bracket wise) is clinched by winning one of the final two.

Taylor with his second solo HR on the day in the 5th gave us a 2-1 lead.  That was followed by a Cerny double and a Serruto single.  Glasser's SF scored Cerny to make it 3-1.  This was Taylor's 16th HR on the season.  Interestingly, Taylor was dropped from the 3 spot to the 7 spot for today's game.

From Matthew Byrne:  Iowa beats Northwestern, meaning that Indiana has to win today to be the No. 2-seed in the B1G Tourney.

After giving up 2 singles in the 5th, Bothwell was pulled for Hayden with runners on the corners and 1 out.  Hayden gets a strikeout but then walks the next batter to load the bases.  A hit to left field scored 1 run but a terrific throw from Jessee to Serruto nailed another runner at the plate to end the inning.  After 5, Hoosiers lead 3-2.

Both teams scored a run in the 6th ours coming on a Mathison solo HR.   We added 2 more in the 8th to take a 6-3 lead  into  the 9th.  MSU with a 2-run double off Foley made it 6-5 and with runners on 1st and 2nd, Foley got a huge strikeout and save a 6-5 Hoosier victory.  Based on earlier reports, this secured us a 2 seed in the B1G tournament that starts next week.
