Any Chance Purdue and Matt Painter Part Ways?

Recommended Posts

I moseyed over to a Purdue board. They compared their team to the 1980 Soviet hockey team.   …no. Purdue wasn’t even the best college team, and had a real bad couple months aside from the tourney. They also threw around potential coaching replacements of Bill Self and Nate Oates. That’s just not happening, either from the University, or the draw of the program. The best shot would be Shrewsberry, but he’s already got a good thing going and has a big contract coming. He may already be out of Purdue’s reach.

Painter has the program doing better than ever, even with the tourney disappointments. The unmet expectations were put in place by this coach, not the program’s prestige. As others have said, it’s more likely Painter dumps Purdue than Purdue dumps Painter.

Would Painter be better at IU than at PU?

despite yesterdays performance I believe he is a very good coach and knows how to get players that fit his needs.

that said, while he gets the types of kids he wants, they are usually 3 star level players. Could he get those types but 4/5 stars if he were at IU?

He's killing it at Purdue and I'd take his accomplishments here at IU any day over what we've been dealing with for basically decades.

HOWEVER, I'm thinking we finally have something with Woody where I no longer would take Painter over IUs coach.

Bo Ryan was one of those coaches who couldn't win in March either, until he did.

2 Final 4s and a National Championship appearance made all that talk go away real quick.

All it takes is 1 year to break through.

Bo Ryan was 14-11 prior to his first final four.  He ended 23-13.  He also had 13 tournament appearances in his 13 years.

Matt Painter has now been at Purdue for 18 years.  He missed the tournament three times -- although it would be four if the 2020 tournament had been held.  He is now 17-14 and in his last ten tournaments he has five losses to double-digit seeds -- #11, #12, #13, #15, and #16.  It's a pretty leap IMO to think that he'll end up as Bo Ryan -- Ryan wasn't continually dropping tournament games in poor tournament teams.

Painter won’t ever get it done because “It’s Purdue” lol. It’s the exact opposite of “It’s Indiana” in this case. While Purdue is satisfied with good enough, Indiana isn’t satisfied with just good enough. That’s really the main difference here

That describes Purdue history in a nutshell. They have to realize they wouldn't get a top coachnin the first place but the last couple of years shows you top coaches aren't leaving their current job.

Oh, but if you look at their message boards, they think they could go get Nate Oates or Bill Self.  It is seriously the most delusional group of fans in sports history.

I saw a YouTube video in which some dude goes on a diatribe that it's time for Painter to go. Somewhere in the comments is a suggestion that Jay Wright might like to call West Lafayette home.

I don't know what was funnier -- that, or the actual loss to FDU.

Everyone knows that big name coaches are just licking their chops for a shot at landing the Purdue job. The campus just sells itself and all the available NIL money not to mention all the talent Painter has stockpiled on that roster. Who wouldn't want the job?

I’m thinking Cuonzo Martin is their replacement ceiling — West Lafayette! Pork chop’s not going anywhere.

Painters recent teams were not built for tournament success IMO. Way to one dimensional. Those mid 2000 Hummel teams is where probably should have made a FF.
Not sure the style of play that the B1G and their officiating seems to embrace really lends itself to post season success. Painter's teams seem to be built for league play but college basketball has evolved.

There is zero percent chance purdue moves on and rightfully so. These guys had a he'll of a season winning the conference and big tournament conference in same year. Iu hasn't ever even won the big tournament ever! The worst loss in ncaa tournament and possibly ncaa basketball history cannot erase all that. Hopefully this hurts them in recruiting and such and they struggle from now on but as of now with what we know they are the clear favorites next season and possibly title contenders. Also purdue was number 1 in the country for several weeks the best they have ever been ranked before last season. Iu Has by my count had 1 season in the last 20 plus years at number 1. Not putting us down or bragging them up but you would have to be insane to chance moving on. Tournament success isn't there yet but I would ride out what they have going before taking a huge risk

Even though this is tic, this even proves more the point that Painter isn't going anywhere, unless he decides to move on.  Look at what he is doing under these circumstances.

In terms of being title contenders next year….Eddy’s post game words really sound like he is turning pro.

The cynic in me thinks that when the dust settles on everyones' seasons, he'll announce he's coming back for "unfinished business" or something cliche like that.

Very possible. He doesn't appear to have anything left to prove in college though I don't see him developing a 15ft jumper or handling the ball in the open court. Will just be more of the same. So unless he enjoys college I would think he'll bolt.

I agree, but also think he could look at this season and say that his stock will never be higher. Unless he is able to add long distance shooting, the chances of everything going as well as it did this year are not good. At his size, you always have to be concerned about what an injury will do to your future.

Zero chance but this kind of reminds me of Dallas/Jason Garrett (I'm a Cowboys fan). Garrett had some good teams, but it was clear he could not get them by the divisional round. Painter is similar. He's had some VERY good teams/players. Think I saw where ten times he has been a top 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. Has only made the Elite 8 once and he can thank Cline for that.

Purdue has only been to 2 FF's..1980 was their last..IU has been to 4 since their last.

Purdue has also been to 5 E8..before 2019 the last one came in 2000.

At Purdue they are just fine with winning Big Ten titles and making the Sweet 16. That's Painter's bread and butter. Nothing against them, but that is their standard.
