Who knows what’s up?

HoosierHoopster and Stuhoo know what’s up.

I think I saw on the Field of 68 they had Tamar on their list of breakout stars for next year. While I'm high on Tamar (think he will be our 6th/7th man this year..maybe even start if Coach wants JHS off the bench) I'd bet on JG to be the breakout star of this team. If you look at per 40 minute stats he really was IU's 4th best player behind the big 3 of TJD, Race, and X. I don't think its out of the question he could average 10 plus a game and get around 6-7 rebounds a game. I have faith he's going to be able to start at the 3 this year.

Extra JG for me, hold the Kopp.

I don't care what you call him. 2, 3, or 4.

But yes, improve your handle young man, and cut down on those bad passes.

Would love for him to break out, but I'd simply be happy if he could at least be a reliable 3pt specialist.

Who is this teams third option at PG? We have two very good options in X and JHS. It's possible X might have to miss some time at the start of the year. If one of those guys goes down for a few games or gets into foul trouble, who steps up? I know Galloway ran it some last year. If I'm Anthony Leal, I'd be really working on this part of my game to potentially run the point if needed. He averaged 1 assist in 10 minutes a game.

My way-to-early expectations at depth are

PG

  1. XJ
  2. JHS
  3. Bates
  4. TG/Leal toss up based on what we're hearing about Leal

SG

  1. Bates
  2. JHS
  3. TG
  4. Leal
  5. Gunn

3

  1. Kopp
  2. TG/JG toss up
  3. Leal

4

  1. RT
  2. JG
  3. Reneau
  4. Banks

5

  1. TJD
  2. RT
  3. LD

I’m not sure how Woody does it but many coaches have migrated away from the old pg/sg/etc… designations and just have a primary ball handler spot.

As you said Galloway is capable of adding minds there. Similarly I expect Bates to improve enough to be able to pull spot duty as the primary ball handler. That should be plenty.

I'm really encouraged by our depth -- however we might break down that depth at different spots, the depth of talent, both incoming and returning, and veterans is there.

I'm not sold that we should be the pre-season pick for top of the B1G, but I am confident we'll be in the hunt with the top group, and that's a major step forward, great to see, lots of reasons for optimism going forward.

I like how it is Leal plus the 4 freshmen against the starting 5. That helps Leal with ballhandling and leadership. Plus it gets JHS used to playing off the ball. Do I ever think Leal will play PG? No. If he does we're in some trouble. But I have no problem with him getting a rebound and bringing the ball up the floor.

Any clue what the other scrimmage team is?   Is Kopp with the starters?   Or did Bates or JG get left out

I'm not sure, to be honest, just going off what Leal said of him and 4 freshmen. I'm guessing and it's a guess X, Bates, JG, Race, and TJD. Kopp has mentioned that he is trying to get a foot healthy so maybe he isn't playing yet. But honestly not sure.

Gotcha. That makes sense.  I have high hopes for that lineup.  Kopp feels more suited for the steady veteran that can come off the bench in case of injury. Hoping that’s how it all shakes out

I disagree. I think Leal may be a surprise as a back up PG. Kid knows bball, and usually makes good decisions. And playing "against" the starting 5 can only help solidify his decision making.

Last year, he looked for his shot as the absolute last resort. Was always trying to get it inside to Trayce or PS or Kopp if they were open.

If he can get his confidence up, I look for him to surprise many of his doubters.

Not to mention, he won't be playing against any tougher pg, than the one he's competing against every day in practice.
