IU Baseball vs Evansville - 3/25 - 3/27/22

Recommended Posts

Wind must be blowing out as they're in the middle of the 4th and the teams have combined for 4 HR.   Game  tied at 9-9.  Jack Perkins started and lasted into the 4th giving up 9 runs (only 4 earned); 7 hits; 5 BB.  We've committed 2 costly errors.  Holderfield relieved Perkins in the 4th.  We scored 2 in the 1st on a single by Tibbitts.  4 in the 2nd courtesy of an Evansville error and hits by Ellis and Pyne.  In the 3rd, we got a solo HR by Tibbitts and a 2-run HR by Doanes.

The teams combine for 29 hits and 31 runs but in the end Evansville wins 17-14.  Collectively we allowed 13 hits and issued 9 walks, hit a batter and balked.  Don't think there's anything we didn't do.  E'ville had 4 HR among it's 13 hits.  The ERA for our staff before this game was 6.61.

Tibbitts had 4 RBI; Ellis 3 and Doanes 2 for IU but tough to overcome when the other team scores 17.

Game #1  IU 6    Evansville 5

Hoosiers got off to a good start in the first game of today's doubleheader.  Brad Brehmer pitched 6 shutout innings only allowing 1 hit and walking 4 batters.  Reece Sharp took the mound in the 7th and it looked like the Hoosiers could coast to a win.  NOT.  Sharp pitched the 7th but collapsed in the 8th and Evansville scored 5 runs all on HRs but we managed to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and held on for a 6-5 win.

We scored 4 runs in the 1st inning,  2 of them on an Ellis HR.  We scored 2 more in the 4th.  We had 8 hits for the game with Whalen the only Hoosier with more than 1.

Game #2     IU  6          Evansville   5            This is our first series win since the first weekend in March against Missouri State.

Nathan Stahl started on the mound and was pulled in the 2nd with 1 out after allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, a BB and a HBP.  Kraft came on and pitched through the 6th and was replaced by Bothwell to open the 7th.  Kraft flirted with danger in the 4th loading the bases with 1out but got consecutive K's to end the inning.  Kraft scattered 7 hits and walked 2 but only 1 run scored.  Bothwell struggled in the 7th and was replaced by Luke Hayden.  Hayden walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and then gave up a run scoring single followed by a WP and Evansville tied it at 5.  He walked another batter to again load the bases and was yanked for Braydon Tucker who got a strikeout to end the Evansville 7th.  Tucker stays in for the 8th and 9th and doesn't allow a hit or a walk and gets the credit for the win.

We scored solo runs in the 1st and 3rd and added 3 more in the 5th.  After Evansville tied it in the top of the 7th, we regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a Glasser single.  We finished with 7 hits.  Doanes went 3-3 and Glasser 2-4.

B1G season opens next weekend as we host Northwestern.

Full release -

After holding Evansville hitless through five innings of his start last weekend, senior Bradley Brehmer earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, announced the conference office on Tuesday (March 29).

In his fourth start in the cream and crimson, Brehmer fired six scoreless frames to help IU even its series with Evansville in game one of the Sunday doubleheader. He held the Purple Aces hitless through five frames and struck out five in the outing. Brehmer earned his team-best third victory of the season, as IU has won three of his four starts on the year.

It is the second weekly honor of Brehmer's career, as he was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on May 18, 2021, after a two-hit, eight strikeout effort versus Oakland while at Wright State.

The Hoosiers will have the week off in front of its Big Ten opening series with Northwestern at Bart Kaufman Field. Indiana and Northwestern will throw the first pitch in the series at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1.
