Indiana at Wisconsin Game Thread

Oh wait, Hepburn is the 1 and Davison is the two.

  • That would put Miller on Davis, with X on Hepburn and Parker on Davison. That's a tough matchup for Kopp, but I strongly suspect Woody tries it to start the game.
  • I'd expect an early appearance by Scoop, who at the three would then get Davis. Too bad -- Galloway is a perfect fit off the bench to mark Davis.
  • The upside to this less-than-optimum matchup? It puts Race at the four against Wahl. Wahl is an undersized four who cannot shoot from outside, which gives Race the ability to protect the rim while guarding Wahl.
  • Crowl with Trayce means that TJD has to guard the perimeter - Crowl will take and can hit an unguarded three.
  1. Hepburn/X,
  2. Davison/Parker,
  3. JDavis/Kopp,
  4. Wahl/Race,
  5. Crowl/TJD

Kopp would be a bad call for that defensive assignment. 6'5 scoring machine from deep and inside. Kopp does not have the defense to take on that assignment and we'll almost certainly be in a hole quick if that's it. Would have to think Fife et al will make a call here.

So who would you have Kopp match up with?

Like you I expect Scoop in fairly soon, but I'd prefer Stewart early.

X already fouls heavily and I don't want him in foul trouble 5 min in. BTW, Geronimo hasn't been playing great, but he has shown he can lock people down, and I'd like to see him get part of the defensive assignment when he comes in. Scoop though prob will be get a real test here.

We're going to have to really switch well, in any event, but man that's a bad matchup

Well that would leave Kopp on Davison. Maybe so, but I doubt it.

Remember, though I agree that it's a bad matchup, I think that Crowl on Trayce and Wahl on Race are just as lopsided matchups, but to our benefit.

There is something to this, but it has been a long time since IU had an intangible presence on the sideline to influence the refs, to counterbalance crowd induced calls.  Woody strikes me as somebody who can do that...at least I hope.

I think Woody can do good to great things at IU. It will take a lot more before IU gets a favorable, or even a fair whistle, in that shithole. It’s a conference thing. The Big 1.0 offices love this **** basketball and the +10 Wiscy starts with at home. Woody isn’t changing that his first trip up there as the HC. I’d respect him a lot more if he went ballistic after the fifth WTF call before the second TV timeout.

Davison is no slouch for sure, but Davis is their engine. He's also hitting at 40% from deep (Davis at 34) and assists at 2.4/game. I don't have a good answer but Kopp on Davis is probably a disaster waiting to happen. (Not meant as a slam on Kopp, but that's a really bad matchup)

Some highlights of Woody's Monday night sit down with Fisch. I liked this one in particular:

On Tamar Bates: “He’s always licking his chops in terms of getting into the game. I just have to get him licking his chops to play defense.”

This is how I’d expect them to start. Stew on Davis, X on Hepburn can limit X’s fouls early, Kopp probably isn’t at an athleticism disadvantage against Davison and his height can be an asset.

Didn't he end up with like 30 points that game and like 20/22 at the line?

How many think this game is a major measuring stick to see where the start of the Mike Woodson era.  We have won there in over 20 years.  If we win this game, it will not only get the Wisconsin monkey off of our back it will also prove we can win key road fans against one of the best programs in the B10.  It will also prove CMW’s game preparation is good too!

I'll be interested in seeing what the line will be.

Wisconsin is just a bad matchup for IU on paper.  We can all see that and we know our history in Madison post BK.  I'm hoping that Coach Woodson begins working the officials early and often about Davison and company.  And once he's warned... have Fife take over for him.

This might surprise some of you.

Indiana is #40 with 21.9 attempts per game thus far in 2021..

Wisconsin is #121 with 18.9 attempts per game thus far in 2021..

Now, whether the foul shots were earned or given is another story.

https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/stat/free-throws-attempted-per-game

Free throw attempts per game since the Bo Ryan era (Wisconsin's average - Indiana's average) MOST:

2001-2002  WIS 20.02  IND 19.62

2002-2203 WIS 19.34  IND 23.55

2003-2004 WIS 21.38  IND 18.34

2004-2005 WIS 20.15  IND 20.03

2005-2006 WIS 22.06  IND 16.87

2006-2007 WIS 23.56  IND 18.84

2007-2008 WIS 20.75  IND 23.03

2008-2009 WIS 17.67  IND 18.74

2009-2010 WIS 17.21  IND 22.74

2010-2011 WIS 15.68  IND 19.75

2011-2012 WIS 15.97  IND 23.83

2012-2013 WIS 19.00  IND 25.11

2013-2014 WIS 17.52  IND 24.66

2014-2015 WIS 19.13  IND 19.15

2015-2016 WIS 20.80  IND 19.66

2016-2017 WIS 19.00  IND 20.09

2017-2018 WIS 17.52  IND 20.77

2018-2019 WIS 15.62  IND 19.86

2019-2020 WIS 14.90  IND 15.19

2020-2021 WIS 15.3  IND 23.2

Now, I do realize this is for all games and not just Wisconsin's home games.  It would be interesting to see how many shots they took at home vs away during this time span.  Maybe I'll crunch those numbers before game time if I find the motivation.  But, for now, I thought this was interesting to look at.  I think these numbers would look very striking if you looked at home vs away games, but I figured the free throw attempts stats would have favored more for Wisconsin overall throughout most of the seasons listed.  Granted, you also must take into account the personnel as to how likely a certain player or a specific team is to be fouled (style of play).  And, as stated earlier, this doesn't prove whether the foul shots were earned or given.
