I would start Xavier, Stewart, Bates, Race, TJD. Geronimo, Lander, Kopp off the bench

durr doesn’t give us much. Not sure what people see with his passing, he cannot get his feet off the ground and tries to pass over the top and gets deflected regularly.

I am starting to get on the train of starting Lander. I like Bates coming off the bench. Gives someone that's got a mind for scoring to come off the bench. But the potential Lander is showing to run the show is just oozing so much greatness. He pushes the ball, looks up the court. He must have watched some Jordy Hulls highlights because he throws some perfect passes up court to beat the defense. The more comfortable he gets on the floor and having the ball in his hands the better off this team will be.

I know it was garbage time but would have liked to have scored in the final 4+ minutes

Having IU team total over 74.5, I second this.  Missed free throws and layups killed what should have been a winnable bet.

I’m also excited by many of the skills he has shown but my excitement level has a relatively low ceiling until we see what he can do against Syracuse and Big Ten opponents.  This is not a knock on Lander, as all he can do is play when he is put in, but his playing time has almost entirely been against two horrible teams.

Maybe I am having flashbacks of all the posters that got excited when Damezi hit a few threes, against a crappy team, but he never could do the same against more athletic/quicker to close out/longer players. I think/hope KL will turn out to be what we all hope but am not for anointing him the starter until we see he can perform against stronger competition. (that being said his speed, vision etc looks like he could be really good/special).

I don’t think it’s a Damezi situation at all. Lander has all the tools to be a really good point guard, and you can see he’s starting to figure out the college game. His knowledge, confidence, and body are going to catch up with his talent and he’ll be a handful. I’m excited for the rest of this season, but I can’t wait to see next year’s Lander/Bates/Hood-Schifino lineup. If Woodson can talk TJD into coming back (which I doubt), I think we’re in the NC discussion.

I agree and also don’t see him as the next Damezi. Just saying I want to see what he does against decent/good teams. Hopefully will be fun to watch.

Just for reference, Illinois beat them 71-47 in their opener and Louisiana Tech beat them by 2 (Lou Tech is an okay team).

Come on now…Illinois beat Jackson State by 24 with Curbelo, Frazier, and Cockburn inactive. Louisiana Tech’s 3 wins are Jackson State (293 Kenpom), Northwestern State (341 Kenpom), and some NAIA school called Jarvis Christian. Their loss was a 30 point drubbing by Alabama. I always love a win, but we played a terrible team tonight.

I expect him to struggle a bit as we go into conference but I’ll be surprised if he isn’t the first PG off the bench before the end of the season. I know some people favor Phinisee’s defense but the offense dies when he’s on the floor and we still don’t shoot well enough to dig ourselves out of a hole. I think Lander’s offense ultimately wins out.

If you can point to me where I said Jackson State was good, please point that out.

And if you want site Pom, then correctly site the fact that Louisiana Tech is at 103.  As I said, Louisiana Tech is okay.

The line tonight was 24.5.  We won by 35.  I’m sorry if that disappointed you.

He held his own very well against St. John's when Phinisee went out. And that was against the more athletic guys. His defense has definitely improved from last season, which was a low bar, but improved still. He's going to end up being really good. He's showing the flashes we had hoped to see last season.

Lander won’t be starting this year baring an injury. I don’t see that happening but if he keeps up his play he will take a major chunk of Rob’s minutes when he returns unless they play them together.

I would really like us to shorten our rotation to 8 people.  And I just can’t see a reason for Rob to be in that 8.

I don’t want to see that until at least conference play and even then it’s not likely to happen based on the way this roster is constructed imo

Oh I agree completely about conference play.  But against legit competition I just can’t see a reason to give Phinisee minutes.  The offense does just die.

I think if he plays it has to be off the ball for defense and that role might get taken back by Galloway when he returns. I think that’s the only spot for him the way Lander is playing.

For us to matchup with Purdue depth wise, we will have to play 9-10 players.  Also, that is an advantage against teams, it allows to play fast and wear teams down, IMO.

Rob’s basically a 6’1 shooting guard who can’t shoot. It’s not an ideal situation to have, at least offensively. He’s a very good defender but honestly the defense has been outstanding the past two games without him. Sure it was against not so great competition, but still. The defense looks great. It makes it harder to try to find minutes for a defensive specialist when we can still put out a great defense without him.

Lander’s defense hasn’t looked nearly as bad as it did last year. He’s getting better on that end, and he’ll continue improving as he plays more. On the offensive end, you can’t teach his vision. He’s always looking to push the ball and make plays. A lot of his turnovers come from him trying to do too much, like the turnover on the fast break from the pass to Bates. Those will be cut down once he gets a better feel for the college games. You can reel a player in more easily than you can get a player to start taking risks. I like that he’ll make a bad play but stay just as aggressively instead of becoming hesitant.

I just feel like the benefits of Rob’s defense do not outweigh the way he tanks the offense. He has a -0.5 PER and a 32.7 TS% this year. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen such low numbers from a rotational guard before. The more experience Lander gets the more it’ll benefit us in the future. A guard trio of Lander/Bates/JHS is pretty dang good and would be attractive for post players/wings looking to transfer.

The drop from his freshman year has been crazy. Seemed like he had such a bright future and it just never happened.
