Class of '66 Old Fart

(2024) - SF Bryson Tucker to Washington via Portal

Recommended Posts

Mt. St. Joseph (11-5) defeated Loyola Blakefield (4-6) 70-57.  I had Tucker with 26 pts. on 11-16 FG; 2-3 on 3s; 2-3 FT; 3 reb; 2 asst; 0 stl; 0 blk; 0 TO.  All but one of his 2-point FG attempts was a jump shot in the 10-15' range with  most coming off his dribble.  He made only one drive to the basket but it was a nice move and he finished with his left hand.

I've not found any consistent reporting of his game stats.  For 15 games, he's averaging 19 ppg and thru 11 games he's averaging 6 rpg and 3 apg.

Mt. St. Joseph (11-5) with a 72-52 win over Boys' Latin (0-6).  Tucker with 24 pts scored in a variety of ways:  turnaround jump shots, jumpers off his dribble, drives to the bucket and slam dunks on fast break lobs.  Only shots he didn't make were his 3s as he went 0-4.  Also had 2 reb; 2 stl; 1 blk.

Mt. St. Joseph (16-4) (6-3) defeats Mt. Carmel (17-4) (7-3) 84-68.  Both schools are members of the 8-team Baltimore Catholic League and the league uses a 30-second shot clock.  Tucker finished with 24 pts. on 9-24 FG; 0-4 on 3s; 4-4 FT; 16 reb; 2 asst; 2 stl; 0 blk; 2 TO.  He missed a number of shots at the bucket and showed visible frustration with the lack of foul calls.

Mt. St. Joseph  73-57 win over St. Vincent Pallotti.  Tucker  25p  11r   6a  1b

Excerpts from the Baltimore  Sun post-game story --

Tucker, a 6-7 sophomore who shares ball-handling duties with Valentine, came out in the second half running the point and getting the ball to the rim.

Tucker scored 15 of his 25 points in the second half; 8 coming in the final quarter.

“Bryson is a tremendous player,” Pallotti coach Kyle Harmon said. “He’s got some abilities that a lot of people don’t have, and with his size and skill level, it’s a tough matchup for us. We were trying to limit other players from having big nights knowing that he was most likely going to have one.”

Tucker, who grew up in Bowie, also had six assists and was most proud of the way he got stronger as the game progressed.  "I feel like my green beans, I really turned it up toward the end, that was my main thing,” he said.

Monday night Mount St. Joseph (23-5) beat Calvert Hall 70-57.  Tucker had 16 pts. (5-3s) and 8 reb.

Tonight MSJ (24-5) beat St. Maria Gorretti (16-13) 78-52.  Tucker 19p  7r  3a  0s  1b  1t.  Not a good shooting night for Tucker as he was 5-14 on 2-point baskets with many of his misses coming around the bucket.  He's picked up a habit of "whining" when he misses a basket and thinks he was fouled and then is slow to hustle back on defense.

Jamie Shaw and '24 shooting guards to keep an eye on.

6-6 Bryson Tucker

Tucker has an advanced approach to the game. He has good positional size and is comfortable on the ball. At 6-foot-6 Tucker makes great reads as a slashing off-guard, playing balanced, with his head up. The Baltimore (MD) Mount Saint Joseph’s sophomore’s dad played collegiately at NC State and then George Mason.

Claimed offers: Indiana, Notre Dame, George Mason, Georgetown, Maryland, Illinois, Penn State, LSU, Virginia Tech, etc.

In an MIAA semifinal game, MSJ defeated Arch. Spalding 68-60.   Tucker 29p (10-19 FG, 6-9 3P, 3-4 FT), 4a.  Championship game is Sunday afternoon.  Tonight was MSJ head coach Pat Clatchey's 1,000th game in charge tonight.  Clatchey is 748-251 overall in 30 seasons at MSJ.

Point Guard Eyes post-game -

'24 Bryson Tucker was superb from the mid-post - showed excellent patience + savvy. Hit mult. fadeaways going R & L from 16-17 ft. But it's how he sets it up using his feel for the D... Moves well w/o the ball & uses A+ footwork to prep for the shot.

Mt. St. Joseph wins it 63-60.  I had Tucker with 20p  5r  3a  1s  0b  0t.  Tucker didn't have a spectacular shooting night but if you watched, you saw what he can do with the ball in his hands in terms of creating his own shot.

The Baltimore Catholic League tournament starts on Wed., and MSJ will play Loyola in a 1st round game.

In the Gaels’ 73-36 quarterfinal win over Calvert Hall on Wednesday, he contributed 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.

On the season, Tucker is averaging 22 points, six rebounds and four assists per game.

MSJ (28-5) (11-4) advanced in the Baltimore Catholic League tournament with a 68-66 overtime win over Loyola Blakefield (16-12) (3-11).  MSJ had to rally in the last 4 min of the 4th to tie it up at 58 in regulation.  MSJ was flat for most of  the game.  Couldn't shoot and a step slow on defense.  They were also lucky as an LB player missed a bunny at the end of regulation that would have won the game for  LB.  Tucker finished with 15 pts. but was just 5-16 on 2s and 1-3 on 3s.  He made his first 2 baskets early in the 1st Q and then missed his next 10 shots.  He added 2 reb; 4 asst; 1 stl; 0 blk; 3 TO on the night.
