Eh, I mean Calipari has won 25+ games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. Won the SEC once, finished second two times. Two sweet 16s and one elite eight (with the tournament being canceled one of those five seasons).

26-8; 9-16; 25-6; 30-7; and 26-11.

Is that winning big? I guess it depends on one’s definition. IU has won 25 games twice in the past decade, and four times in the last 19 years. Folks don’t like Calipari’s ways, but he’s been in the elite eight in half of his seasons at Kentucky. I’d rather have to out talent a team using mediocre coaching than out coach a team using mediocre talent.

Don't get me wrong - he wins a lot of games.

My point was more that in the past five years he has grossly underachieved compared to the five star and NBA talent on his roster. During that time period he has had:

  • Herro
  • Quickley
  • Keldon Johnson
  • PJ Washington
  • Maxey
  • Tshiebwie
    • and a bunch of others that have been on NBA rosters for a minute

Every single one of those last five years he started the season as a pre-season top ten team, and every single time he finished it out of the top ten, with only one Elite 8.

There are definitely coaches who could get more out of the rosters he’s had than he did. But I’m not sure how many of those coaches could land the level of talent that he does. Seemingly every year he’s getting a top 2 class.

To not get too far off topic, we’ve made offers to 13 of the top 30 kids in the 2024 class. Calipari, going off his history, will land 3-4 of those 30 kids. I’d love for IU to get to a point where we’re doing the same thing.

True for sure. But here's more to it than that. Yes, he's gotten enough talent to win 20-something almost every year. But that's at the cost of a roster that largely and overwhelmingly has little connection to the university, does not produce any UK graduates, and feels like a temporary gang of mercenaries.

To Calipari's credit, last year (and this coming year) he has a much less 'quick pass through' roster. Of course, without a team of one and dones he'll need to coach them a little. Last year with a more experienced roster he finished third in the SEC, and got bounced by St. Peter's in the round of 64. He can either have overwhelming too young talent, or try to coach the guys that stay... with Bruiser lol.

William Jobe enters the mix!!

That is an underrated 'good to see' because there are some serious IU connections there. I so hope that young Mr. Jobe turns into a fast riser.

Also good to see Raleigh Burgess getting love - seems like we are in a good position with him.

Every single time I’ve gotten to watch Burgess I like him more. He’s gonna be such a useful piece for a winning team.

We only took a look as he quickly committed to toilet making, but Kanon Catchings rose 100 spots with this update to #17 and 5-star status.  I really wish he would have kept his recruitment open longer.

He looked every bit the part when they came to Kokomo a few months ago

I dont think rankings hold much weight til they’re updated during aau season in my opinion. D1 players should be standing out vs non d1 athletes. The only players I’d say have accurate ranks right now are the players playing in the NIBC

I think it is safe to say that we are aiming high lol.

We may have to rename or sell campus buildings and highways leading into Bloomington to get enough NIL for that list.
