Class of '66 Old Fart

(2023) - SG Jakai Newton to INDIANA

Recommended Posts

My early takeaway from highlight videos

SHIFTY, ATHLETIC, EXPLOSIVE.

I don’t know his shooting percentages but he has his own unique shooting form. I don’t predict him to be a 3 point specialist. He likes to do a borderline Carry/Gather on his dribble that he isn’t being called for yet.

Sounds like a great kid that loves Indiana. Body of a B1G player already.

Let’s Go!

Seems like a kid who is proud to put on the IU uniform. Love this pickup. Looks like the hiring of coach Woody may be a lot better than most gave him credit for when he was announced. Go Hoosiers.

According to 247 this kid is a 3 star and not even top 100.

no way.

Welcome to IU Jakai.

That’s likely to change Rabby said he thinks he’s a top 80 player at least

Tweeted earlier this evening we've extended an offer.  6'3" SG/CG who attends Newton HS in Covington, GA.  Rivals has him #90 nationally.  Quite unique that his surname is the same as the school he attends.    Plays AAU for Atlanta XPress 16U on the UAA circuit.

4 months to the day from the offer? Impressive turnaround and close by the staff. Kid is oozing potential and think he is under-ranked.

I’m sure it is. But then again, they literally just ranked him 117 a week ago. So my point remains, no way.

The good thing from having a well established and well liked former NBA coach being our leader is that you have a little bit more faith that he knows what a good player looks like. Rankings be damned.

I was thinking the same thing. He knows exactly what he is looking for in a player and how they will fit into how he wants to play. I'm not sure who does the ranking for the various services, but I would trust CMW's evaluation more than theirs. I also love that he is getting high quality kids as well and not taking a flier on on high risk players like a certain former coach did.
