Travis Branham's list of sleeper freshmen.

Tamar Bates | Indiana | SG | No. 29 Overall

Mike Woodson took over in Bloomington and quickly got to work on the recruiting trail. He hit the transfer portal hard but also landed one highly touted high school prospect in Tamar Bates.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound shooting guard out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy broke out as a star in the 2021 class last high school season. The lefty is a confident and skilled scorer who is also capable of playmaking for his teammates.

There is age and experience on Indiana's perimeter with guys like Xavier Johnson, Rob Phinisee, Parker Stewart and even Khristian Lander but Bates is expected to have a serious role with the Hoosiers this upcoming season.

Bates skillset and his three-level scoring will be valuable to Woodson's program as they get things rolling in year one.

From 247 - A way-too-early look at 2023's potential breakout stars

G Tamar Bates, Indiana

Bates is yet another sophomore who could be ready to take a big step next year. Indiana's backcourt should be a lot more open for Bates to rise up and earn a big starting role. Bates will have to keep progressing on defense, but he's got the talent to average double figures next year and be way more than just a nice role player.

Rooting for this young man!

Seeing a 5☆ sitting on the sidelines (warranted or not), and being the first one off the bench(besides Anthony) to cheer/encourage his teammates, showed me what a great addition he was to this program moving forward.

When was the last time we had two 5☆ in the backcourt together?

Thank you. That was driving me crazy. Too forgetful to remember, to lazy to Google.

Can't wait to see an upgrade in our talent level. Most of these highly ranked players are used to playing with highly ranked players.

Bates was really progressing before the personal loss and issues he went through, after that he missed games and then didn't fully regain his trajectory.

Fully expect he will as a soph. He has all the talent as a two-way guard who can score at 3 levels, and as a soph would expect Woodson will now turn to him more

St johns and osu and i think msu games are the ones where you can really see the potential.

Bates is the kind of recruit we have really lacked the last few years. Confident and fast. You can just tell he has a different gear he can hit. Looked like a really good shooter from the corners down the stretch as well. These are the kind of guys we need to keep getting. A Junior Bates and Sophomore Hood-Schifino... Could be pretty awesome in a couple years.

Don't sleep on Banks either.

The kid's big and can shoot.
