Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

Recommended Posts

A potential Hunter, Fife, Lewis combo sounds great, along with  Matta and a possible Roberts position, but isn’t it a little unusual for a head coach to take a new job with very little previous interaction with any of his assistants? Seems like he would have at least one guy that he has worked with, implicitly trusts, has known for a while etc etc .Maybe Woody knows one of those 5 guys a lot better than I realize but it just struck me that he doesn’t appear to be bringing in a wingman.

In the NBA, you don't usually do that. You try to get as much BB knowledge on the bench and to get guys that fill a role that you don't. I just went and looked at Frank Vogel's staff in L.A. He has two high-profile former head coaches in Jason Kidd and Lionel Hollins and a guy who was an assistant in Cleveland with LeBron in Phil Handy. Archie brought in a bunch of guys from Dayton, thinking that what worked there would transfer to the P5 level. Woody is trying to get guys that compensate for his deficiencies in recruiting contacts.

Anyone hearing a presser being set up for Wed?

Saw what you and the other guy were talking about on HSN about his buddy’s restaurant having a big catering order for Wednesday and that he saw Sean May on the shortlist. Definitely is interesting if it pieces together. Makes me wonder that if there is indeed a presser on Wednesday if that means we won’t hear anything about it until then with a presser, or if there could still be an announcement today, and then they say there will be a presser to go along with it on Wednesday.

Writing on the wall? OR he was told he no longer is a candidate? Better compensation?

It could also be just that the majority of his recruiting contacts are in the south/southwest and that it is easier to get kids from there to Norman than to Bloomington.

Very good point that I hadn't considered.
