Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

Kind of wondering with UCLA's success if Lewis doesn't end up somewhere else as a head coach.

I guess there's the eventual chance to promote from within if he does come to IU though.

Brings up something to think about. Good assistants come in 3 varieties: longtime guys that don't want to be or previously were head coaches, guys that are ultimately destined to be head coaches, and nomads that change jobs every 2-4 years.  I hope Woodson is able to find a guy that will be around for a while along with some younger, ambitous guys that can recruit like crazy.

Knight had guys that were with him short term that became HC's like Crews, Dakitch, etc.. Older guys like Felling and Ellenberger.  Davis was one of the recruiter type guys.  It'll be very interesting to see how the staff takes shape.

Edit: Hunter is going to be our recruiting specialist.  One down, two to go.

Like we have a strength guy that does not count against the 3 assistants can we hire a player development guy to just work on skill development. I think the NBA has roles like this but was not sure what you could do in college.

Yes. You can have support members. Here's some examples

Chief Of Staff

Director of Player Development

GA's

It looks like IU is finally looking to invest in these extra support positions. Seeing Matta get a created position and hypothetically adding Larry Brown to a support position give me a sense that the IU administration is really willing to give Woodson everything he needs to succeed.

Honest question, I’m thrilled that Kenya Hunter is staying for continuity purposes, but what recruits has he landed over the course of his 18 year coaching career to be deemed an “elite recruiter” by Rabby.

He very well could have recruited plenty, but I know he was at Nebraska and UConn and those two schools haven’t exactly been filled with 4 and 5 stars.

So let’s say we hire this guy who was really supportive of the Woodson candidacy named Trish to be the Player Development guy. Can we require players spend x hours a week working with him?  Does that eat into the number of coaching hour limits we have or can we do that in addition

If I remember correctly, he did land some 4 stats when he was at UConn. I’m not totally in tune with his recruiting resume though.

Why you think I changed my username on this site... ;)

It does eat into the hours. The NCAA is pretty strict on the hours per week, but.. who really follows the hours you know? It's harder to get away with at Indiana compared to a DII in Ohio.

GA's technically can't be on the court with the players nor can DOBO's. But when no one is looking.. ;)

What helps is that we'll have a full summer of workouts compared to last year, where it was slightly limited due to COVID.

They didn't create Matta's position. The job description has likely changed but the position itself is not new.

So if you are not “on” the court we should be good.

Although, I'd say that Matta's $400k salary and bonus package structure is a major increase in investment at this position

For anyone interested. This is who he has landed per 247's insight.

Gotcha. I’ve heard a lot of people praise his work with big men and I think that’s evident with Race and TJD’s play this year, but I think the recruiting hype may be a little undeserved and biased.

That doesn't include any of his work at Georgetown (Greg Monroe, D'vauntes Smith-Riveria, Isaac Copeland, Henry Sims all 5 or high 4 stars). Also recruiting top 100 kids to Nebraska isn't anything to scoff at. I think he's recruited at a high level relative to the schools he's been employed at.

I get that, but where has he been that’s gonna get kids to come? He’s was doing pretty good at UConn before taking the IU job. Before that he was at Nebraska.

I wouldn’t think it’d be that hard to get talented kids to come to UConn, but asgoonaha pointed out to me, he was decently successful there. Nebraska obviously isn’t very appealing to high-level recruits, but my point was just that Hunter gets a lot of hype for his recruiting skills when outside of a few guys I haven’t seen much talent that he’s brought in throughout his career. Granted Hunter hasn’t been in Bloomington long and there were many other factors going into this (ahem, Archie) but just Duncomb and CJ Gunn isn’t anything to be thrilled about either.

Have you ever been to Nebraska? Can you imagine trying to get kids to come there? Plus he's on a bunch of class of 22 kids so make sense to keep that going

Shockingly, I have not been to Lincoln. Hopefully Hunter can bring a few more guys in to add to CJ!
