Candidate Thread: Steve Alford

You know what, I think I'm with Dan on this....tired of looking at all the "shiney" coaches with great resumes that always fail at IU.

Alford is not Stevens, but Stevens is not Alford either.

RMK teams didn't always win, but his teams didn't embarrass our fan base either. Would Alford win at IU, who knows until it happens.

What did he get in trouble for when he was a player at Indiana?  Was it the full size USA basketball poster?

Fundraising calendar put out by the Cheerleaders, I believe.

Ah ok. I found the full size poster rolled up in my childhood bedroom and thought maybe I found the thing that got him in trouble.

it was a cool find though regardless, can’t imagine there are many of these left in circulation - 35 years old

Piss on DD. BTW I went back last night and watched IU beat UNC in the 1984 tourney. First time since watching it live. Alford scored 27 points as a freshman and basically carried us down the stretch. DD fouled out with 4 points.

but he did shut down Jordan.  Last night I watched the 87 final four game against UNLV so I could actually see what good offense looked like.

If we arent serious about landing a top tier guy then Alford is light years ahead of every other name mentioned.

Agreed. Here is what he did at UCLA.

Made the tournament in four of his five full seasons. Three sweet 16s in five seasons. And I know I know, it’s UCLA. It recruits itself. His results aren’t good for UCLA. I’m not saying I want him to be our next coach. I don’t. But he’s someone with head coaching experience at a comparable level as IU. He had some success there. After the five years we just had, three sweet 16s and four tournament appearances in five years sounds pretty good. If we go the IU guy route, I don’t think there’s a better candidate than him. Lewis or Fife have more potential, but potential is exactly that - potential.
