I guess as a long time fans we have seen what has worked at IU and what hasn't.  RMK built a culture of tough minded players who might not be the highest rated but they worked together well.  He brought in guys who were tough and wouldn't back down from a fight.  He brought guys with high basketball IQ's and guys who could actually hit shots.  He built a culture of tough minded defense where the whole was greater than the parts.

What we have witnessed the last 21 years has not worked so why not try going back and building a culture that has worked at IU.  This might not work elsewhere but at Indiana this kind of thing is important to the program.  Why not bring in a guy who passion is IU basketball over a guy who is coming here for a raise or a guy going up a level.

I absolutely agree with you!

I just don't think it has to be an "IU guy" for all that to happen. I wish it was, but none of the IU guys are up to that task, IMO. None.

As I mentioned in the big thread, Stevens isn't an IU guy and we got all hot & bothered about him!

We have no idea how a former IU would do here either way.

What about Lewis-Matta? Or Lewis-Woodson?

Hmmmm, still skeptical, but would prefer Matta. Can't imagine a scenario he agrees to be an asst though.

Has Woodson ever coached in NCAA?

To steal others rationale, hard to believe someone paid $10mil to make Archie go away to bring in Lewis though. I guess you could pay him $1.5mil and spend the rest on an uber staff!

I would be ok with any option of these combos: Lewis as associate HC

matta

beilein

Smart

Honestly I’m ok with Lewis as HC and a really high paid staff.

Why would Matta need a HC in waiting since he is only 53

Because no one knows what to expect from him. He was let go for Health/Performance issues 3-4 years ago. Although those things can get better, generally more age doesn’t put you in a significantly better spot. If it was truly his back, at that age, to cost him his job, it’s a serious situation.

That’s because that page is full of the “it’s gotta be an IU guy” types.

"IU guy" is quickly becoming one of my least favorite terms to see. I couldn't care less if our next coach played at IU, played at Purdue, or never played in college at all. I just want someone with proven success. I can't get excited about inferior candidates because they played at IU 15, 20, 30 years ago.
