I mentioned it yesterday but Norlander has said several times this season that he didn’t take UL due to the fishbowl of it. No idea if that’s true. He Never mentioned the low buyout demand, and I have never found anything to support that oft mentioned claim. Maybe it’s true that it was a deal breaker? I dunno.

In that same vein though, I agree with you I don’t understand where this “not an alpha” thing comes from lol. I don’t care if he’s a statue if he wins games. I know I don’t like Hurleys antics.

Are Hurley’s antics even what’s considered “alpha” ? Lol… the term is really silly to me. Being a leader takes many forms, people have different styles. Alpha doesn’t mean anything IMO. No idea about the UL being a fishbowl thing but for example you could view it as alpha for him to say “screw that noise, I don’t need it for a job I don’t want.” just as easily as people assume he must be a soy boy beta for not wanting the attention lol.

We need a coach who knows how to be a leader. I don’t care if he does that by huffing and puffing or by being reserved and amiable. Just earn respect and win.

I am not trying to start a war here but I would like to know what it would take for everyone who doesn’t want Beard to change their mind (I am also in this camp)?

Would a Ray Rice type of mea culpa do it or is he persona non grata no matter what?

Mods can delete this if they think it is inappropriate. It is just something I have been thinking through and I wanted to solicit the RESPECTFUL opinions of others.

I already stated before that I wouldn't change my mind but I'll elaborate.

I feel very strongly about domestic violence.

\When I was a young, my mom's second husband was abusive. He was physically violent against my mom and younger brother and mentally/emotionally abusive to all of us. She wasn't with him too long before we left but it left a lasting impact. I remember. I remember the fear. I remember the fear my mom had even, especially, when she decided to take us and leave since that is one of the most dangerous times in an abusive relationship. He was such a POS that my sister, his daughter, didn't bother trying to get his paid off house and other belongings when he died without a will because she wanted nothing to do with him.

A lot of people view this as just a one-off "accident" or something. Domestic violence tends to escalate over time. So the thought that the first time this particular guy laid hands on a women was in his late-40s and resulted in the cops being called because of how very violent it was is laughable to me. It wasn't a single slap or punch. It was biting and strangling. She called the cops because she literally feared for her life.

People can fool themselves into thinking this was an isolated incident. I won't because the chance that it is is astronomically low.

I won't change my mind. If he is hired, I won't be a fan of IU basketball while he's the coach, possibly never again. Miller and now Woodson have made it easier than ever to walk away if it comes to that. That said, I think the chance that IU actually hires Beard is pretty much 0%.

There’s a natural tendency to be attracted to an @$$-kicking, hyper-intense coach that wins.
But it’s also true that for a seemingly less intense coach like Stevens or May to be this successful there needs to be an extraordinary competitive fire and work ethic, albeit one that may not be as apparent to the public.

I hate to say it, but Painter is probably the perfect balance. He’s tough with his guys, doesn’t put up with crap. Doesn’t allow careless ball to take place. Also isn’t overly wild on the sidelines.

May is a calmer version of this. Michigan gets very careless, especially with leads. Not always super intense. They built a great roster and they are doing great but have chinks in the armor.

I’ll be happy if that’s the choice (and I think it will be) but I could see things snowballing on him.

That would be me!  I’ve been a long time reader, but I’m not really connected to anyone and didn’t feel I had much to offer in terms of insights.  But optimism that Dolson can do with the mens basketball program what he did with football.

Everyone has good insights and things to offer, just jump in and share.

Most of my opinions are that of a certified moron. For lots of us it’s cathartic, particularly when we are bad, which is often lol.

Hope you stick around, and remember, the mods are hiding ad revenue in shoe boxes and are not to be trusted— just kidding they’re all great.

Why do people think Dusty doesn’t have a strong personality or isn’t “alpha” ? Genuinely curious what evidence there is of that.

He’s not the coach we’re looking for I assure you.  I do think he’s the most likely hire though.  Better pray Brad says yes or we’re doing this again in 4 years.

Coach K is sorta an example.

With his soft-spoken, nasally voice -- he, most of the time, came off as a pretty nice guy. "I love my players. They love me. We're all one big happy Blue Devil family."

But I understand he was a real SOB in practice and was as intense and foul-mouthed as anyone.

Coach K had plenty of Bobby in him…

Dusty has a nice recruiting class coming in next year too so that could be a plus. What would be really fun is if we got Stevens and he swooped up Nate Ament

Johnell getting denied admission has also got to be working in our favor. Michigan will never be as attractive as long as their undergraduate transfer rules are in place.

If iu wins today are some of your opinions going to change on Dusty? I like Dusty just think it’s a fun talking point.

I think it’s gonna happen, but I’ve been wrong about our Hoosiers plenty this year on the court, so who knows.

Won’t change my opinion anyway. I think he’ll do fairly well at Indiana and I’d have hope for the future but won’t have full confidence we will be at the top of the B1G by default per se.

Two of the most competitive people I’ve ever known were quiet and reserved. The “take it all in” type but would bite your head off in a pickup game of basketball.

No need to be brash and loud to be competitive or effective. I’d rather have a more stoic personality on the sideline.

I don't think he has. There are stories about how he tried to quit drinking, but couldn't pull it off:

So if we're going to shy away from "drinkers", nobody on our list will be coaching here

Thanks for your assurances and the photo of him in glasses. This totally reinforces that he is very much not alpha and not the coach for us. Thank you.

FTR I'm fine with May. Not high on my list but I think he could do fine. BUT.....let's be honest here. It looks like at 3 a.m. he reached to the night stand to get his glasses, grabbed his wife's instead and then didn't realize it the rest of the day.

Here’s an easy example for Dusty May. It’s a short video of him coaching high school girls at a camp re: close outs. Developing techniques, not an angry guy, and extremely intense even though it’s high school girls at a camp:

Could you imagine this level of coaching from our man Woody?
