General Coach Candidate News

The more I think about it we need instant impact at this point and with the transfer deal likely in place we need a coach who can bring in impact players via transfer immediately. Who is that? Thad been out of coaching and belein. Who can bring us guys cause I feel alot of our guys will transfer if a change is made. but perhaps not

Think Beard would be good here but don’t think he would consider it

I know this is the basketball forum and I love what tom Allen has done with the football program and did deserve a raise because our program has been trash since forever but am I the only one who is concerned about the fact we still haven't won a bowl game and alot of things fell our way to have a good season last year? I am expecting to be relatively disappointed this season and won't be one bit surprised.

You're not alone. I think what Allen has accomplished is special by IU football standards but I also feel like a lot of things went our way for that to happen. I guess my stance is cautiously excited for this season. Regardless if he can duplicate this past season or not we are still way ahead of where we used to be especially from a consistency standpoint. I think the raise was deserved but I also agree I think some fans may be setting themselves up for disappointment this year. We'll find out in a few months.

I do think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves with the lists. I said I knew of calls being made which is essentially saying Dolson is doing his due diligence. I guess this is also a worthy topic on a message board so carry on...I have zero info about a realistic list outside of the speculative/logical options I've seen posted here

Since you asked :)

Agree on your "no chance" list. So moving on...

Beilein & Matta seem the most likely- need to be vetted for ability and drive. I say proceed with extreme caution, but proceed. Any red flags should eliminate them, IU can't afford to find out Beliein has lost the fire in his belly 2 years down the road or have Matta tapping out because of his back after a couple of seasons. Either would be devastating.

I have stated before that I can't imagine why Drew would want to move, BUT fine with kicking the tires. Still he isn't a magician. Took a good while to get things rolling in Waco. IU should be a faster turn-around but not sure it's fair to expect a dramatic turn.

Similar feel on Beard & Mack. Sadly, IU doesn't offer much over current jobs without a lot of grunt work first to return the shine.

Oats is the most interesting to me for personal reasons and that he is young and has some results to evaluate. Seems like a winner on the trajectory for big things.

Our roster isn't thread bare in talent by any means and those Davis Brothers would look pretty good in Hoosier uniforms.

Mack may know the shits hitting the fan at U of 6 and wants out. I'd be fine with that scenario.

So even though we aren’t sure of the exact list of candidates, is it indeed safe to say Archie will be gone at seasons end, or is even that still up in the air? Thanks

Fantastic coach.  I would love him as coach.   I think no one is mentioning him because he got taken home, county roads.   He was born in Morgantown,  transferred and played for West Virginia.   I think he is home until retirement.

Good coach.  Don't know how clean of a program he runs -- simply saying I don't know, just that there have been signs it's not but definitely not proof.  I know that at Cincinnati he was known for never having players graduate and that he used the Michael Beasley potential recruitment to leverage a coaching gig at Kansas State and then left before Beasley arrived.

But X's and O's and getting guys to fit his system.....very, very good.

Ahead of ourselves for even thinking of replacements, meaning we may not be replacing, or ahead of ourselves for narrowing things down the way we have?

I think it's definitely up in the air. The situation is pretty complicated, honestly. People like donors, BOT, Athletic Department are in a lot of unprecedented ground with COVID. A lot of the donors probably made out okay and positive through it. I can think of one I've been to games with who I KNOW is struggling. Some of you may know who I'm talking about. I forget that poster who I assume got banned bc he was a pain to some but I know we had convos about this donor. Add in IU is currently searching for a new President which takes some precedent. McRobbie cared nothing about athletics, which whatever I'm cool w a hands off President in that regard but was a bit a a handcuff at times.

People will combat the COVID stuff by saying "look what we just did for Tom Allen and the football program, and we're a basketball school." Check out the financials and return there and it's obviously worth it to invest in the FB program.

Anyways, to say that COVID doesn't play a role, what it did for revenue streams and uncertainty going forward (things are looking up but still) it's not your standard situation. I get that "IU can find the money." Sure, is the candidate out there you want or do we fire/hire due to public pressure? No, lol, there is power in numbers but that isn't exactly how this country works unfortunately. Like I said, Dolson will make his calls. To say they're moving on solely due to W/L is naive

Can someone remind me of him? Something about "hell" in his username? Maybe lol? Truly forget..it's been a little while, folks. Good to be back albeit wish it were under better circumstances

I mean, look...I don't get minute by minute info. I try not to have to seek it out so much. This whole thing with the Executive Session, idk to me means not a whole lot. Last I heard there were calls being made and, frankly, I would expect no less. Are they back channeling? Probably should be so I would assume. I'll try to get some info but gotta say it's always better when it just comes to me rather than fishing
I appreciate your info and your response although it doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. I have a question and it's not necessarily just for you Pap although I'd like to get your take on it. So from an athletic standpoint IU basketball is #1 in brand recognition at Indiana and I don't think any will argue that. A vast majority of that fan base has lost belief in this staff. So wouldn't you say to not make a change at HC of the BB team(which is what that same majority wants)but then to give the football coach a raise in March when basketball is still at the front of everyone's mind is very bad timing from an optics or PR standpoint? And then by doing all of that wouldn't that be driving the wedge even deeper and causing even more animosity from the fan base? I get fans don't matter in the moment but over the course of time they do. I'm not trying to combat you Pap, I'm really not, just something I thought of after taking in the realization that a change very well may not be coming.

Definitely not taking this as combative, as you mentioned. Good questions, I'll answer what I do know.

I do agree it's not the best time/optics. Unfortunately, the other option is worse. Select a guy you aren't feeling for sure, hire him, pay the buy-out on CAM, pay the salary. Not invest in a program that makes more than 2.5x the storied basketball program. Be back where you're at right now 4 years from now. I get why everyone is looking for a change, I think you do have to consider the flip of the coin and not just next year.

Fans do make a difference. Donors make more of a difference. TV deals...mwah. Archie Miller, Tom Allen and Scott Dolson took paycuts...
